A suture anchor-based repair technique for type IV jersey finger injuries: a biomechanical investigation.

The aim of this biomechanical investigation was to evaluate a repair technique for type IV FDP tendon avulsions using a suture anchor, addressing the bony and the tendinous aspect of this injury simultaneously. In 45 distal phalanges from human anatomical specimens the injury was simulated and repairs were performed with a suture anchor using an innovative technique, interosseous sutures and a combination of screws and an interosseous suture. Repetitive loading for 500 cycles simulated postoperative mobilization. Repairs were loaded to failure thereafter. Elongation of the tendon-suture comple

A Critical Review of the Incidence and Risk Factors for Finger Injuries in Rock Climbing.

Rock climbing is a popular sporting activity and indoor sport climbing has been accepted for inclusion in the 2020 Olympic Games. The aim of this article is to critically review research on the incidence and risk factors associated with injuries during rock climbing. A semisystematic approach in reviewing literature on incidence and prevalence was applied. Articles were identified after searches of the following electronic databases: Discover, Academic Search Complete (EBSCO), PubMed, Embase, SPORTDiscus, and ScienceDirect. Despite methodological shortcomings of the studies contained within th

Self-inflicted finger injury in individuals with spinal cord injury: an analysis of 5 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the occurrence of finger autophagia in 5 persons with traumatic spinal cord injury and to present a discussion of putative causes and potential treatments. BACKGROUND: Minor self-mutilating actions, such as nail biting and hair pulling, are common in humans and usually benign. In some circumstances, these behaviors are associated with obsessive-compulsive personality traits. In humans, self-injurious biting behaviors are well described in the setting of mental retardation and psychosis and in persons with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. Rare cases of human autophagia in persons w

Finger force enslaving and surplus in spinal cord injury patients.

This study investigated the phenomena of finger enslaving, involuntary finger actions by non-intended fingers, and force deficit, smaller maximum force by all four fingers than the sum of individual finger maximum forces in individuals with cervical spinal cord injuries (SCI). A total of 16 subjects participated in this study: 8 with a cervical spinal cord injury and 8 controls. Each of the injured subjects had one paralyzed finger. The results showed that the efforts to produce force using any individual finger induced force production in all other fingers, suggesting finger force enslaving.

Optimising the conservative management of closed tendinous mallet finger injury.

Mallet finger injuries are a common presentation in the emergency department. These injuries result from a forced flexion at the distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) that causes extensor tendon disruption, and possibly bone avulsion, at the base of the distal phalanx. This article describes the anatomy, mechanisms, classification and assessment of mallet finger injury. It reviews different types of splints used in the conservative management of closed tendinous mallet finger injury and discusses the latest evidence regarding immobilisation methods and treatment duration. Maintaining the DIPJ in

Treatment of degloving injury of three fingers with an anterolateral thigh flap.

The degloving injuries of the digits and palm remain a persistent challenge. We used an antero- lateral thigh flap to treat an 18-year-old, right-handed male worker with degloving injuries of the index, middle and ring fingers. The flap was designated to wrap the entire circumference of three fingers sustaining degloving injury and to form mitten-hand. The total lengths of the distal phalanxes of three fingers were retained almost complete. The donor defect was covered with split-thickness skin graft. Three months after the first operation, roentgenograms revealed terminal phalanxex resorption

[Self-inflicted finger-amputation: insurance fraud or accidental injury?].

A 50-year-old surgeon was working with his electrical circle saw as a do-it-yourselfer. He was alone, nobody witnessed his mishap when he amputated his left index finger. He claimed high financial compensation from two accident insurance companies because of his disability. A long series of medical expertises followed. The juridical procedures took 12 years in total. All higher authorities had to deal with the forensic medical implications. Finally, the high court (Bundesgerichtshof) decided that the complainant would receive no compensation because he gave two very different descriptions. Con

Injuries of the fingers and hands; a review of cases from the standpoint of compensation.

Review of records in cases of injury to the hand that come before the California Industrial Accident Commission indicate that:1. Primary closure at a suitable level in finger amputations is often preferable to plastic repair.2. Complications incident to plastic repair in minor injuries frequently increase disability and cost to employer.3. Tendon injury resulting from strain is a frequently overlooked cause of disability.

The use of external fixators for finger injuries: pin placement and tethering of the extensor hood.

External fixation is useful for the treatment of selected injuries to the hand. Some authors have suggested that external fixation of a phalanx may tether the extensor hood, thereby hindering active movements and predisposing to permanent adhesions. There is no consensus as to the best site for placement of the pin to minimise these problems. This study was performed on cadaver specimens to investigate the influence of the pin site on the range of simulated active movement of the interphalangeal joint. The dorsal midline position produces least interference with the extensor mechanism; radial
