Community-Based Development of Tools to Assess Firearm-Related Attitudes and Beliefs: Associations with Firearm-Related Practices, Social Influences, and Violence Exposure.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate four novel measures of firearm-related attitudes and beliefs developed through participatory action research, and to determine their associations with firearm-related practices and violence exposure. Participants were a pilot sample of 550 U.S. adults (51% female; 65% White; 16% Latine; 13% Black; Mage = 48.3) and a nationally representative cross-validation sample of 1,674 U.S. adults (52% female; 61% White; 18% Latine; 12% Black; Mage = 47.4). Competing models of the structure of each measure were evaluated based on analyses of data from the pilot sa

A field survey on the annoyance caused by sounds from large firearms and road traffic.

Subjective reactions to artillery sounds were determined for over 400 respondents divided among 17 different residential areas. Also, for the same respondents, the subjective effects of road-traffic sounds were determined enabling a comprehensive comparison of the dose-response relations. For the sake of comparison with other field surveys, the noise dose for the shooting sounds was, among other things, expressed as the yearly average C-weighted day-night level (CDNL) and that for the road-traffic sounds was expressed as the A-weighted day-night level (ADNL). Similarly, for both sound types th

Alcohol, firearms, and suicide among youth. Temporal trends in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 1960 to 1983.

The death certificates and coroners' reports for all suicides, undetermined causes of death, and questionable accidents were obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of Vital Statistics for 10- to 19-year-old residents of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, from 1960 to 1983. During the 24-year study period, 159 cases of definite suicide and 38 cases of likely suicide were noted. The suicide rate increased markedly among youth during the study period, particularly among white males aged 15 to 19 years, and was not due to changes in classification procedures over time. The suicide rate by firearms

Firearm Mortality and Equitable Access to Trauma Care in Chicago.

IMPORTANCE: Trauma deserts are areas with limited access to trauma care, particularly affecting marginalized and racial and ethnic minority communities in urban areas that are already disproportionately affected by firearm injuries. Distance and time to trauma care after firearm injury have been shown to be significantly associated with mortality. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of opening a level 1 trauma center in an urban trauma desert with mortality from firearm injuries. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used an interrupted time-series analysis of 45 150 shooti

Women with firearm injuries: A multicenter mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Female firearm injury is rising yet remains understudied, particularly among survivors. We examined factors associated with mortality and the circumstances surrounding firearm injury in women. METHODS: We performed a retrospective multicenter mixed-methods study of 208 women with firearm injuries from five trauma centers (2012-2016), using regression and qualitative thematic analysis. RESULTS: Crude mortality was 14.4%; most patients were Black (70%) and injured by assault (72%). White women had higher unadjusted mortality than Black women (25.5% vs 9.9%; p = 0.008). In Firth-p

Screening for Firearm Violence Exposure in Adolescents and Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Firearm violence now accounts for more than 45,000 deaths annually in America, making it the leading cause of death in the pediatric population. Despite this, primary care clinicians (PCCs) lack screening tools to assess a patient's future risk of gun violence, hampering the ability to allocate resources that could prevent morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Longitudinal quantitative study designed to evaluate whether the Serious fighting, Friend weapon carrying, community Environment, and firearm Threats (SaFETy) score and other measures could predict gun violence exposure over 6

The Carceral State, Social Disorganization, and Firearm Homicides in Chicago.

IMPORTANCE: Black and other racially minoritized groups are overrepresented among those who experience firearm homicide. There has been a stark increase in incarcerated populations in the US since the 1980s, largely due to differential drug sentencing, of which racially minoritized individuals are also overrepresented; social disorganization theory postulates that community and family instability resulting from incarceration can further worsen crime. OBJECTIVE: To understand the association of race-specific incarceration with race-specific firearm violence rates in Chicago, Illinois, through

Firearm Ownership and Support for Political Violence in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: Little is known about support for and willingness to engage in political violence in the United States. Such violence would likely involve firearms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether firearm owners' and nonowners' support for political violence differs and whether support among owners varies by type of firearms owned, recency of purchase, and frequency of carrying a loaded firearm in public. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional nationally representative survey study was conducted from May 13 to June 2, 2022, among US adult members of the Ipsos KnowledgePanel, incl

Appendicular Ureteroplasty for a Firearm Related Rupture of the Right Ureter.

One of the most challenging aspects of urology is restoring patency to ureters with long defects. In certain cases, it may not be feasible to perform plastic surgery on the ureter with its own tissue or bladder. In such instances, alternative solution like appendicular ureteroplasty may be promising solution. Ureteral injuries have several etiologies, some of them are secondary to unintentional ureteral trauma during surgery. More than half of these injuries are unrecognized during the first laparotomy. Extensive ureteral injuries are difficult to repair, even with application of several types

Firearm injury to the left buttock with uterus penetrating trauma.

A multispecialty trauma team must provide care for pelvic gunshot wounds (PGW) due to the high risk of associated morbidity and mortality, the high density of organs that might be wounded within the pelvis, and the potential consequences of these complicated injuries. We present a case of a 59-year-old woman hemodynamically stable with firearm injury to the left buttock. CT examination showed free air in the peritoneal cavity and in the retroperitoneum and a focal contrast extravasation within the uterine fundus. The patient underwent urgent laparotomy that revealed triple bowel perforation (s

An examination of preferred messengers on firearm safety for suicide prevention.

This study sought to determine differences in preferred messengers on the topic of safe firearm storage and suicide prevention between firearm owners and non-firearm owners, and among firearm owners of different racial groups and sexes. Participants were 6200 United States residents recruited via Qualtrics Panels to complete an online survey. Data were collected during March 2020. The total sample and all subsamples ranked law enforcement, current military personnel, and military veterans as the top three most credible sources to discuss firearm safety for suicide prevention. Significant diffe

Helping individuals with firearm injuries: A cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with firearm injuries are at high risk of subsequent arrest and injury following hospital discharge. We sought to evaluate the effect of a 6-month joint hospital- and community-based low-intensity intervention on risk of arrest and injury among patients with firearm injuries. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial, enrolling patients with firearm injuries who received treatment at Harborview Medical Center, the level 1 trauma center in Seattle, Washington, were 18 years or older at the time of injury, spoke English, were able to provide consent and a

Homicides and suicides by firearm in Marseille: An 8-year review.

The regions of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Corsica in south-east France are regularly affected by firearm deaths, and a large amount of data has been collected by our forensic institute. We carried out a single-center retrospective descriptive study of the records of our institute between January 1, 2011, and 31 December, 2018, relating to firearm deaths (homicides and suicides). There were 302 cases (218 homicides and 84 suicides). The anatomic locations most frequently involved were the thorax, abdomen and head, in that order, in homicides and the head in suicides. More than 80% of the ho

Reconstruction of firearm and blast injuries in Syrian war refugees.

BACKGROUND: War injuries differ from other injuries owing to the large tissue defects they cause and their high risk of contamination. As fragments scattered by high-energy firearms and explosives cause serious composite tissue damage, repair of such injuries is difficult and requires a long treatment period. We discuss the treatment methods used for injured Syrian War refugees admitted to our clinic and present the most effective repair methods for war-related tissue defects for each region of the body. METHODS: A total of 61 patients treated between June 2012 and April 2015 were retrospecti
