From knowledge production to knowledge translation: Waterpipe tobacco control research in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) rates in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) are the highest worldwide, particularly among young people. Although fiscal policies to curb tobacco use have been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), implementation has been suboptimal. The Eastern Mediterranean Consortium on the Economics of Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking (ECON-WTS) was formed in response to this need to produce knowledge on the economics of WTS in the EMR and apply a comprehensive Knowledge translation (KT) framework. The KT framework com

Gender-neutral human papillomavirus vaccination: an equitable and cost-effective public health investment.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) drives a substantial cancer burden across all genders. This perspective argues that gender-neutral HPV vaccination is an equitable and cost-effective public health investment when designed for scale. Rather than presenting methods in detail, we synthesize recent epidemiology, policy positions, and economic evaluations to propose a simplicity-first pathway-a pragmatic model that, where permitted, prioritizes single-dose schedules, school-based delivery for adolescents aged 9-14, small, computable set of key performance indicators (KPIs) set (coverage, timeliness, seri

Beyond the sugar tax: public acceptability of a comprehensive food policy bundle in urban Ghana.

BACKGROUND: The escalating burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases in Ghana has prompted the government to implement a 20% excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages through the Excise Duty (Amendment) Act 1108 of 2023. While fiscal measures have garnered significant advocacy, public health experts emphasize the need for a "double-duty" policy bundle, including food marketing restrictions, front-of-pack warning labeling, and public food procurement policies. The problem is that public support for this broader bundle remains understudied in urban Ghana, risking implementation failure. OB

Japan's Demographic Dilemma: Navigating the Postpandemic Population Decline.

In recent years, Japan has faced a significant demographic crisis, which was further exacerbated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. By 2022, the country experienced a 1.5% decrease in population, which is in contrast to other G7 nations, and had the highest rate of excess mortality among Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries. This crisis is mainly attributed to aging population, with Japan's aging rate reaching 29.9%, the highest among its peer countries. The Japanese government, led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, has proposed policies aime

Does Circular Economy Contribute to Smart Cities' Sustainable Development?

The purpose of this research paper is to investigate and identify the factors which can support the development of one characteristic of smart cities, namely, the smart environment. More specifically, the main goal is to measure the extent to which air pollution may be reduced, taking as determinants several circular economy, fiscal, and environmental factors. The Ordinary Least Squares, the Fixed Effects, and Random Effects regression models using balanced panel data were employed, over the 2011-2019 period, for 28 European states. After rigorously studying the literature, 11 indicators with

Implementing Title X: policy design, administration, and geographic access to care.

BACKGROUND: Title X of the Public Health Service Act is a critical federal program-the only one dedicated exclusively to providing affordable, confidential, evidence-based reproductive health care to low-income populations, yet its capacity to fulfill this mandate depends on political, administrative, and fiscal decisions made across multiple levels of governance-from Congress and federal regulators to state and regional grantees and their sub-grantee clinic networks. METHODS: This study assesses geographic access to Title X-funded clinics across all 50 states and the District of Columbia in

Health service disruptions under economic sanctions: evidence from Iran.

BACKGROUND: Unilateral economic sanctions are increasingly recognized as factors associated with structural determinants of health, yet their implications for health service delivery require in-depth examination. In Iran, these pressures appear to extend beyond medicine shortages to affect financing, procurement, infrastructure, workforce capacity, and continuity of care. MAIN BODY: This policy commentary offers an in-depth analysis of how economic sanctions influence health service delivery in Iran, drawing upon a synthesis of existing literature and expert understanding of the Iranian conte

Language Services for Older Adults in China: Evidence from Administrative Enterprise Registration Data and Policy Implications.

Population aging and digital-by-default public service delivery make communication access a policy determinant of equitable aging. In China, dialect diversity, sensory decline, and low digital literacy can prevent older adults from understanding information and navigating health and social services. Yet the provider ecosystem that could deliver language support and age-friendly communication technologies remains poorly measured. This study maps the supply-side dynamics of China's Language Services for Older Adults (LSOA) industry - enterprises offering language-based interventions and communic

Economic sentiment during the COVID pandemic: Evidence from search behaviour in the EU.

The COVID-19 pandemic has inflicted an economic hardship unprecedented for the modern age. In this paper, we show that the health crisis and ensuing lockdown, came with an unseen shift in households' economic sentiment. First, using a European dataset of country-level and regional internet searches, we document a substantial increase in people's business cycle related searches in the months following the coronavirus outbreak. People's unemployment concerns jumped to levels well-above those during the Great Recession. Second, we observe a significant, coinciding slowdown in labour markets and c

Current status and 10-year trends of reimbursed robot-assisted surgery in Japan: a nationwide claims-based study using the NDB Open Data.

BACKGROUND: Since reimbursement under Japan's National Health Insurance system, robot-assisted surgery (RAS) has expanded rapidly. However, comprehensive cross-disciplinary analyses describing long-term adoption trends and regional variation remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate nationwide adoption and distribution of reimbursed RAS across surgical specialties in Japan. METHODS: We performed a population-based study using publicly available claims data from the National Database (NDB) Open Data (2014-2023). All procedures reimbursed as RAS as of fiscal year 2023, along with correspondi

Occupation and oncology: cancer care in Palestine.

Cancer care in fragile and conflict-affected settings is increasingly recognized as a challenge for global oncology. This Policy and Practice Review examines cancer care in Palestine as a case study of how prolonged occupation, armed conflict, restricted mobility, fragmented governance, fiscal constraint, and limited health sovereignty interact to shape early diagnosis, treatment continuity, radiotherapy access, systemic therapy, referral pathways, and patients' rights. Rather than treating occupation as a uniform determinant of health outcomes, the manuscript advances a more defensible framew

A Call for Dietary Sugar Restriction Policy in India in Light of Oral Health Concerns.

Rising sugar consumption in India, particularly from sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and ultra-processed foods, has intensified the burden of oral and systemic diseases. Excessive intake of free sugars is strongly linked with dental caries, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, contributing to escalating health and economic costs. Despite global guidelines advocating for reduced free sugar intake, India lacks a comprehensive national strategy to address this shared risk factor for oral and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This article integrates international evidence and Ind

Evaluation of five fixation methods for mandibular sagittal split osteotomy in a significant advancement with counterclockwise rotation: a finite element study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is one of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) which is rising significantly across sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries and posing a threat to the social, economic, and cultural fabric of the SSA population. The inclusion of NCDs into the post-2015 development agenda along with the global monitoring framework provides an opportunity to monitor progress of development programmes in developing countries. This paper examines challenges associated with dealing with diabetes within the development agenda in SSA and explores some policy options. DESIGN: This conceptual review d

The National Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases and Health Promotion in Pakistan--Cardiovascular diseases.

The National Action Plan for Non-Communicable Disease Prevention, Control and Health Promotion in Pakistan (NAP-NCD) incorporates prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) as part of a comprehensive and integrated non-communicable Disease (NCD) prevention effort. In this programme, surveillance of cardiovascular risk factors is part of an integrated population-based NCD surveillance system. The population approach to CVD prevention is a priority area in this programme with a focus on broad policy measures and behavioural change communication. The former include revision of the cu

From shadow to sustainability: How informality, environmental taxes, and green innovation reshape carbon and biodiversity futures in the G7 countries.

The shadow economy remains a blind spot in climate-and-biodiversity policy. However, its interaction with fiscal and technological forces can significantly affect the success or failure of sustainability transitions. We propose a novel integrated framework that combines econometric models with deep learning to examine the role of the shadow economy, environmental taxes and green innovation on consumption-based CO2 emissions and biodiversity in the G7 countries. Using data from 1994 to 2020, the study employs Cross-sectionally Autoregressive Distributed-lag (CS-ARDL) and Fully Modified Ordinary

Political economy analysis of health taxes (tobacco, alcohol drink and sugar-sweteened beverage): qualitative study of three provinces in Indonesia.

OBJECTIVE: Efforts to implement health tax policies to control the consumption of harmful commodities and enhance public health outcomes have garnered substantial recognition globally. However, their successful adoption remains a complex endeavour. This investigates the challenges and opportunities surrounding health tax implementation, with a particular focus on subnational government in Indonesia, where the decentralisation context of health tax remains understudied. DESIGN: Employing a qualitative methodology using a problem-driven political economy analysis approach. SETTING: We are coll

Food-environment policies for child nutrition in Ecuador and Latin America: beyond front-of-package labels and advertising restrictions.

Latin American countries have expanded front-of-package warning labels and restrictions on food marketing to children, yet childhood overweight and obesity continue to rise. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) dominate retail and digital environments and remain embedded in school settings. Drawing on evidence from Ecuador and comparable middle-income settings, we argue that labeling and advertising policies are necessary but insufficient when healthier options remain unavailable, unaffordable, or outcompeted at point of sale. We outline complementary food-environment actions (e.g., school food enviro

Traditional diets and cultural beliefs affecting diabetes prevention and control in Africa.

The burden of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Africa is growing rapidly due to socio-economic changes, urbanization, and substitution of traditional and nutritious, high-fiber diets with ultra-processed, high-energy foods. This review explains the protective value of traditional African diets that contain native grains and fermented foods, but are under threat of westernization and cultural transitions. Moreover, cultural beliefs, social practices, dietary limitations, and gender roles strongly influence diabetes prevention and management practices on the continent. Community-based programs, schoo
