Deciphering the Effect of Functional Diet Containing Single and Multiple Strain Probiotic, on the Growth, Gut Histology and Microbiome Signatures in the Pacific White Leg Shrimp (Penaeus vannamei).

The present study evaluated the effects of dietary supplementation with single- and multi-strain autochthonous lactic acid probiotics on the growth performance, gut histomorphology, and gut microbiome of juvenile Penaeus vannamei. Shrimp were fed probiotic-supplemented or control diets for 60 days. Dietary supplementation with Pediococcus pentosaceus (10⁹ CFU g⁻¹) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (10⁹ CFU g⁻¹) significantly (P < 0.05) improved growth performance compared with the control. Additionally, MSP11, MSP9, and PP11 significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced localized gut histology, including

Description of Riemerella columbipharyngis sp. nov., isolated from the pharynx of healthy domestic pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica), and emended descriptions of the genus Riemerella, Riemerella anatipestifer and Riemerella columbina.

A group of 11 bacterial strains was isolated during microbiological investigations of pharyngeal swabs collected from domestic pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica). Phenotypic properties of the isolates closely resembled those of members of the genus Riemerella within the family Flavobacteriaceae. The genus presently contains two species, Riemerella anatipestifer and Riemerella columbina. The pigeon isolates differed from R. columbina by their lack of pigment production and negative CAMP co-haemolysis reaction. They grew more slowly at 37 °C under microaerobic conditions and showed reduced via

Biochemical properties and substrate specificity of GOB-38 in Elizabethkingia anophelis.

The novel pathogen, Elizabethkingia anophelis, has gained attention due to its high mortality rates and drug resistance facilitated by its inherent metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) genes. This study successfully identified and outlined the functions of the B3-Q MBLs variant, GOB-38, in a clinical sample of E. anophelis. The T7 expression system was employed to stimulate the expression of recombinant protein in Escherichia coli, followed by an analysis of the biochemical properties of purified GOB-38. Our findings indicate that the enzyme GOB-38 displays a wide range of substrates, including broad-s

Clinical profile and risk factors associated with Elizabethkingia anophelis infection in neonates born in a tertiary care hospital-a case-control study and outbreak investigation.

The objective of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with Elizabethkingia anophelis infection in neonates admitted to a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A case-control study was undertaken as part of the outbreak investigation for E. anophelis sepsis in a tertiary care NICU in South India. Thirty-eight neonates with E. anophelis bloodstream infection (BSI) between January 2021 and February 2022 were enrolled as cases, and 38 neonates symptomatic with other BSIs, were selected as controls, and risk factors analysed. The 38 cases were relatively stable neona

Early neonatal sepsis and meningitis caused by Elizabethkingia meningoseptica in Saudi Arabia.

Elizabethkingia meningoseptica (E. meningoseptica ) are Gram-negative bacteria commonly associated with nosocomial infections in neonates. This is a case study of E. meningoseptica, presented as meningitis and sepsis in a term baby. The female infant was born by vaginal delivery at 37 weeks gestational age. The case was peculiar because the baby was neither premature nor immuno-compromised, which are known risk factors for E. meningoseptica infection. The onset began on the second day of the neonate's life. On day 3, peripheral blood culture and cerebrospinal fluid findings isolated a gram-neg

Functional Insertion of the Light-Induced Ion Pump KR2 into Block Copolymer Membranes.

Light-driven membrane proteins are attractive functional elements for biohybrid membranes, as they enable direct conversion of light energy into ion gradients. While microbial rhodopsins have been extensively studied in lipid bilayers, their controlled incorporation into synthetic polymer membranes remains challenging. Here, we investigate the reconstitution of the light-driven proton and sodium pump Krokinobacter eikastus rhodopsin 2 (KR2) into amphiphilic block copolymer membranes using a mild detergent-assisted strategy. KR2 and a C-terminal GFP fusion variant were incorporated into both so

Decreased resistance to bacterial cold-water disease and excessive inflammatory response in ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) reared at high water temperature.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal elevation of water temperature positively affects immune activity and disease resistance in poikilothermic teleost fish. The ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, an important fish species for Japanese freshwater fisheries, is usually produced under higher water temperatures than the natural conditions to facilitate rapid growth. However, it has been reported that rearing fish at higher water temperatures inhibits the development of the thymus, suggesting that resistance to infectious diseases is reduced in ayu reared at higher water temperatures. Here, we show that decreased res

Development of a colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip for rapid detection of Riemerella anatipestifer in ducks.

Riemerella anatipestifer is one of the major bacterial pathogens of ducks and causes significant economic losses in poultry agriculture. Usually, methods for detecting R. anatipestifer infection need specialized equipment and highly skilled personnel. In this study, a novel colloidal gold immunochromatographic strip was developed for rapid detection of R. anatipestifer in ducks. The monoclonal antibodies 2D5 and 2A6 against R. anatipestifer were used as colloidal gold-labeled protein and capture protein, respectively, to recognize the bacteria in tryptic soy broth medium culture and in hearts

Genomic Features, Comparative Genomics, and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of Elizabethkingia bruuniana.

Elizabethkingia bruuniana is a novel species of the Elizabethkingia genus. There is scant information on this microorganism. Here, we report the whole-genome features and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of E. bruuniana strain EM798-26. Elizabethkingia strain EM798-26 was initially identified as E. miricola. This isolate contained a circular genome of 4,393,011 bp. The whole-genome sequence-based phylogeny revealed that Elizabethkingia strain EM798-26 was in the same group of the type strain E. bruuniana G0146T. Both in silico DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity analysis

Data on the epidemiology and pathology of anatipestifer disease in Hungary (2010-2014).

Anatipestifer disease is a contagious disease caused by Riemerella anatipestifer, affecting primarily ducks, geese and turkeys, and characterised by listlessness, diarrhoea, sneezing, nasal discharge, and nervous signs. Sporadically, it occurs in a wide range of other domesticated and wild birds as well. The incidence and characteristics of the disease seen in the three main host species are summarised based on birds submitted for routine laboratory investigation in Hungary over the period 2010-2014. The infection was diagnosed in a higher percentage in geese (9.9%) and ducks (7.5%). It occurr

Genomic Characterization of Multidrug-Resistant Myroides Odoratimimus from Pneumonic Piglets: A One Health Threat.

Myroides odoratimimus is an emerging opportunistic pathogen increasingly implicated in infections across human and animal populations. We previously reported the first outbreak of pneumonia in post-weaning piglets associated with M. odoratimimus, marking a significant shift in its recognized host range. The affected swine herd exhibited co-infection with Porcine Circovirus types 2 and 3 (PCV2 and PCV3), likely contributing to proliferative dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS), reproductive abnormalities and immunosuppression. This study presents the genomic characterization of a multidru

Bergeyella zoohelcum strain involved in chronic canine rhinitis.

The pathogenesis of dog's bacterial rhinitis is poorly understudied. Bergeyella zoohelcum was isolated from an animal with chronic rhinitis as primary agent. The bacterium identification was performed by both MALDI-TOF and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The phylogenetic relationship of the strain inside de genera was demonstrated, as well as the antimicrobial susceptibility profile and the ability of biofilm formation. We highlight the virulence profile of the B. zoohelcum in, to the best of our knowledge, the first identification of B. zoohelcum as causal agent of bacterial rhinitis in dogs.

Comparative Genomics and Antimicrobial Resistance Profiling of Elizabethkingia Isolates Reveal Nosocomial Transmission and In Vitro Susceptibility to Fluoroquinolones, Tetracyclines, and Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole.

The Elizabethkingia genus has gained global attention in recent years as containing sporadic, worldwide, nosocomial pathogens. Elizabethkingia spp. are intrinsically multidrug resistant, primarily infect immunocompromised individuals, and are associated with high mortality (∼20 to 40%). As yet, gaps remain in our understanding of transmission, global strain relatedness, antimicrobial resistance, and effective therapy. Over a 16-year period, 22 clinical and 6 hospital environmental isolates were collected from Queensland, Australia. Identification using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionizati

Time- and dose-dependent effects of bacterial infection on iron metabolism, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the juvenile soft-shelled turtle Pelodiscus sinensis.

Pathogen-induced high mortality is a severe problem in turtle cultures. Increasing evidence indicates that pathogenic infection may disrupt iron homeostasis, thereby creating a vicious cycle of iron imbalance-inflammation-oxidative stress. However, the effects of infection on iron metabolism and related physiological traits in turtles remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the response of iron metabolism in juvenile soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) under acute bacterial challenge and its association with inflammation and oxidative stress. We intraperitoneally injected juveni

Interplay between a bacterial pathogen and its host in rainbow trout isogenic lines with contrasted susceptibility to cold water disease.

Infectious diseases are a major constraint on aquaculture. Genetic lines with different susceptibilities to diseases are useful models to identify resistance mechanisms to pathogens and to improve prophylaxis. Bacterial cold-water disease (BCWD) caused by Flavobacterium psychrophilum represents a major threat for freshwater salmonid farming worldwide. A collection of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) isogenic lines was previously produced from a French domestic population. Here, we compared BCWD resistance phenotypes using a subset of isogenic lines chosen for their contrasted susceptibiliti

Investigation of the Genus Flavobacterium as a Reservoir for Fish-Pathogenic Bacterial Species: the Case of Flavobacterium collinsii.

Bacteria of the genus Flavobacterium are recovered from a large variety of environments. Among the described species, Flavobacterium psychrophilum and Flavobacterium columnare cause considerable losses in fish farms. Alongside these well-known fish-pathogenic species, isolates belonging to the same genus recovered from diseased or apparently healthy wild, feral, and farmed fish have been suspected to be pathogenic. Here, we report the identification and genomic characterization of a Flavobacterium collinsii isolate (TRV642) retrieved from rainbow trout spleen. A phylogenetic tree of the genus
