Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) from Tenacibaculum maritimum as a potential vaccine against fish tenacibaculosis.

Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) have been gained increasing attention in vaccinology due to their ability to induce strong protective humoral and cell-mediated immunity. The Gram-negative bacterium Tenacibaculum maritimum, the causative agent of marine tenacibaculosis, poses a significant challenge to the global aquaculture industry due to its difficult prophylaxis. In previous studies, we demonstrated that OMV production is a key virulence mechanism in T. maritimum. Building on this, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a natural, encapsulated multi-antigen vaccine made from adj

Longitudinal monitoring for respiratory pathogens in broiler chickens reveals co-infection of Chlamydia psittaci and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale.

Chlamydia psittaci is prevalent in broiler chicken production. However, the role of C. psittaci in the respiratory disease complex needs to be clarified. Our aim was to identify the time point when a C. psittaci infection appeared on a broiler farm and to examine the presence of other respiratory pathogens at that time. We focused on the 'major' respiratory pathogens occurring in Belgian broilers, namely infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), avian metapneumovirus (aMPV), Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma synoviae, and examined their co-occurrence with C. psi

Elizabethkingia in Children: A Comprehensive Review of Symptomatic Cases Reported From 1944 to 2017.

Elizabethkingia species often exhibit extensive antibiotic resistance and result in high morbidity and mortality, yet no systematic reviews exist that thoroughly characterize and quantify concerns for infected infants and children. We performed a review of literature and identified an initial 902 articles; 96 articles reporting 283 pediatric cases met our inclusion criteria and were subsequently reviewed. Case reports spanned 28 countries and ranged from 1944 to 2017. Neonatal meningitis remains the most common presentation of this organism in children, along with a range of other clinical man

Comparison of VITEK2, MALDI-TOF MS, and 16S rDNA sequencing for identification of Myroides odoratus and Myroides odoratimimus.

The genus Myroides comprises the 2 medically relevant species Myroides odoratus and Myroides odoratimimus that are rare opportunistic pathogens and cause infections in immunocompromised patients. A fast identification of Myroides is of importance because these bacterial strains show multiple resistance against antibiotics and therefore limit treatment options. They are associated, for instance, with urinary tract infections, sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, and infectious cellulitis. Since more and more Myroides spp. are being described, additional potentially pathogenic bacteria may be identifi

Deciphering the impact of endoparasitic infection on immune response and gut microbial composition of Channa punctata.

Intestinal parasitic infections caused by helminths are globally distributed and are a major cause of morbidity worldwide. Parasites may modulate the virulence, gut microbiota diversity and host responses during infection. Despite numerous works, little is known about the complex interaction between parasites and the gut microbiota. In the present study, the complex interplay between parasites and the gut microbiota was investigated. A total of 12 bacterial strains across four major families, including Enterobacteriaceae, Morganellaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, and Pseudomonadaceae, were isolated f

Biochemical properties and substrate specificity of GOB-38 in Elizabethkingia anophelis.

The novel pathogen, Elizabethkingia anophelis, has gained attention due to its high mortality rates and drug resistance facilitated by its inherent metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs) genes. This study successfully identified and outlined the functions of the B3-Q MBLs variant, GOB-38, in a clinical sample of E. anophelis. The T7 expression system was employed to stimulate the expression of recombinant protein in Escherichia coli, followed by an analysis of the biochemical properties of purified GOB-38. Our findings indicate that the enzyme GOB-38 displays a wide range of substrates, including broad-s

Unravelling mass mortality in transported rohu (Labeo rohita) fingerlings: evidence of Flavobacterium columnare from Western India.

Columnaris disease caused by Flavobacterium columnare in freshwater farmed fishes is a severe problem, leading to considerable mortality. The present study investigated the mass mortality happened in Labeo rohita fingerlings within 48 h post-transportation from an organized fish farm in Maharashtra, India, to the laboratory. The moribund fish showed clinical signs analogous to columnaris and the bacterial isolation showed pale yellow rhizoid edged tightly adhered colonies which are found as slender rod-shaped bacteria by TEM. Molecular analysis of the isolate using 16S rRNA nucleotide homology

Susceptibility to columnaris disease in Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha offspring from thiamine-deficient and thiamine-replete females.

Nutrient deficiency can cause increased susceptibility to infectious diseases in fish, thus leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality. Thiamine deficiency complex (TDC) in fish can lead to low reproductive success and high mortality rates. Columnaris disease in salmonids, caused by Flavobacterium columnare, has resulted in devastating losses in aquaculture production and wild populations of Pacific salmon particularly associated with climate change and high water temperatures. There is growing awareness that both TDC and columnaris are emerging diseases of salmonids on the west coast of

New culture medium enhances the isolation and culture of Flavobacterium psychrophilum, causative agent of bacterial coldwater disease and Rainbow Trout fry syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Flavobacterium psychrophilum causes bacterial coldwater disease (BCWD) and Rainbow Trout fry syndrome (RTFS) in salmonids, resulting in significant economic losses worldwide. Bacterial culture remains a widely used method for F. psychrophilum diagnostics and is core to BCWD and RTFS research; however, some isolates grow poorly on existing media. The primary goal of this study was to develop a solid culture medium that improves the in vitro recovery of F. psychrophilum across a diverse set of multilocus sequence typing variants. METHODS: Initially, CFU yields of 165 diverse F. psych

Efficacy of a Vaccine for Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) Using a Tenacibaculum dicentrarchi Strain Cultured Under Iron-Limited Conditions.

Tenacibaculosis, caused by T. dicentrarchi, results in skin lesions, ulceration, yellow plaques on teeth, and haemorrhaging in the operculum, peduncle and pectoral fins. It is the second leading cause of mortality in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Chile. Currently, no vaccine is available to prevent the disease. In silico and in vivo studies have shown that iron plays a key role in T. dicentrarchi infection. We hypothesised that culturing the TdCh05 vaccine strain under iron-limiting conditions (i.e., with non-assimilable iron chelator 2.2'-dipyridyl [DIP]) would enhance Atlantic salm

Whole-genome-based taxonomy as the most accurate approach to identify Flavobacterium species.

The genus Flavobacterium comprises a diversity of species, including fish pathogens. Multiple techniques have been used to identify isolates of this genus, such as phenotyping, polymerase chain reaction genotyping, and in silico whole-genome taxonomy. In this study, we demonstrate that whole-genome-based taxonomy, using average nucleotide identity and molecular phylogeny, is the most accurate approach for Flavobacterium species. We obtained various isolated strains from official collections; these strains had been previously characterized by a third party using various identification methodolo

Biochemical reference intervals and pathophysiological changes in Flavobacterium psychrophilum-resistant and -susceptible rainbow trout lines.

Host genetic resistance against disease-causing pathogens can be enhanced through family-based selective breeding. At present, there is an incomplete understanding of how artificial selection of fish alters host physiology and response following pathogen exposure. We previously reported the generation of selectively-bred rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss lines with either increased resistance (ARS-Fp-R) or susceptibility (ARS-Fp-S) to bacterial cold water disease (BCWD). This study (1) determined baseline reference-range intervals for packed cell volume (PCV) and 18 plasma biochemistry analyte

Infective Endocarditis by Capnocytophaga Species-A Narrative Review.

Bacteria belonging to the genus Capnocytophaga are thin, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacilli with tapered ends that include nine species that are isolated from the mouth of humans and animals and, from a phylogenetical perspective, they belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae. Two more species, namely C. endodontalis and C. stomatis have been recovered from a periapical abscess and human and animal infections, respectively. Capnocytophaga spp. can cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in humans, such as bacteremia and meningitis, most commonly in the context of penetrating tr

PorV factor of the type IX secretion system and PosF porin act as adhesins in Riemerella anatipestifer infection.

Riemerella anatipestifer infection is a critical disease that is a major threat to the poultry industry worldwide. The adhesion and invasion of host cells are key steps in the primary stages of bacterial infection. However, the outer membrane proteins that mediate these events in R. anatipestifer are poorly characterized. In this study, the PorV and PosF proteins, as well as the previously described OMP71 protein, were identified as important mediators of the adhesion and invasion of duck embryo fibroblast (DEF) cells by R. anatipestifer. Affinity chromatography-based surface proteomics was us

Effect of Nanophyetus salmincola and Bacterial Co-Infection on Mortality of Juvenile Chinook Salmon.

The freshwater trematode Nanophyetus salmincola has been demonstrated to impair salmonid immune function and resistance to the marine pathogen Vibrio anguillarum, potentially resulting in ocean mortality. We examined whether infection by the parasite N. salmincola similarly increases mortality of juvenile Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha when they are exposed to the freshwater pathogens Flavobacterium columnare or Aeromonas salmonicida, two bacteria that juvenile salmonids might encounter during their migration to the marine environment. We used a two-part experimental design where juve
