Mechanical and rheological behavior of robocast biphasic calcium phosphate cement reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets.

In this study, a biphasic calcium phosphate cement (BCPC) was fabricated, combining the biocompatibility of hydroxyapatite (HA) and the biodegradability of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), and processed by robocasting, an extrusion-based technique, for bone tissue engineering applications. Despite its well-known biological performance, this material is brittle - mainly used as bone graft substitutes due to its limited mechanical strength. To overcome this limitation, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were incorporated into the cement as a reinforcing filler. Their addition not only enhanced the mec

Fatigue behavior and reliability of pressed lithium disilicate ceramics compared to 5Y-TZP zirconia under different loading protocols.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the fatigue behavior and reliability of 5 pressed lithium disilicate ceramics and a 5 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (5Y-TZP) when 3 dynamic loading protocols were used. METHODS: Bar-shaped specimens (30 × 4 × 3 mm) were fabricated from 5 pressed lithium disilicate ceramics (AMB, CEL, INI, IPS, and LIV) and a 5Y-TZP (ZR) (N = 324). Six specimens from each material were subjected to a static 4-point fracture load test, while the remaining specimens were subjected dynamic loading by increasing the starting load (30 % of the static fracture load) in every 5000 cycles by 50

Resourceful Utilization of Cow Hair in the Preparation of Iron Tailing-Based Foam Concrete.

Cow hair, a by-product of tannery waste, is usually stockpiled on a large scale as waste, which leads to serious environmental impacts. In this paper, cow hair was used as a reinforcement fiber to improve the mechanical strength of iron tailing-based foam concrete. The effects of the amount of cow hair fiber on the apparent density, compressive strength, and flexural strength of foam concrete were investigated by a series of characterization methods. Meanwhile, Image-Pro Plus software was used to analyze the porosity, average pore size, roundness, and other parameters of the specimens with dif

Optimization Design of Key Mechanical Properties of Cement-Based Thin Spray-On Liners for Monorail Transport Systems in High-Water-Seepage Areas of Coal Mines.

Thin spray-on liners (TSLs) play a crucial role in the coal mine roadway support. However, the deterioration of their mechanical properties in high-water-seepage environments remains a critical challenge. This study optimizes the key mechanical properties of cement-based TSLs by adjusting the polymer-cement ratio (4-10%) of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). Experiments employed full water immersion curing to simulate high-water-seepage conditions. The flexural strength, compressive strength, viscosity, and bond strength of EVA emulsion- and powder-modified TSLs under different polymer-ce

Assessment of physical/mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of dual-cured resin cements containing Sr-bioactive glass nanoparticles and calcium phosphate.

The aim was to develop dual-cured resin cements containing Sr-bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr-BGNPs; 5 or 10 wt%) and monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM; 3 or 6 wt%). Effects of additives on degree of monomer conversion (DC), biaxial flexural strength/modulus, shear bond strength (SBS), mass/volume change, color stability, ion release, and cytotoxicity were examined. Controls included material without reactive fillers and Panavia SA Plus (PV). Experimental cements showed higher DC than PV regardless of light activation (p<0.05). Mean SBS and color stability were comparable between exper

The effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on bone macroscopy, composition and biomechanical properties after ionizing radiation injury.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy used in tumor treatment compromises vascularization of bone tissue. Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO) increases oxygen availability and improves vascularization, minimizing the deleterious effects of ionizing radiation (IR). Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate HBO therapy effect on bone macroscopy, composition and biomechanical properties after IR damage. METHODS: Twenty male Wistar rats weighing 300 ± 20 g (10 weeks of age) were submitted to IR (30 Gy) to the left leg, where the right leg was not irradiated. After 30 days, ten animals were submitted to HBO th

Comparative analysis of self-cure and dual cure-dental composites on their physico-mechanical behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Clinical practitioners may have become familiar with the rapid transformation of dental composites. However, they may not scientifically understand the factors influencing the mechanical and physical properties. Scientific knowledge of filler-resin interaction can significantly improve clinical understanding of resin composites. Several independent studies have examined the mechanical and physico-mechanical properties of dental resin composites; however, no comprehensive study has examined the influence of fillers and resin materials on the physico-mechanical properties of both sel

Particle Size Effect of Oyster Shell on Mortar: Experimental Investigation and Modeling.

In order to solve the problem of lack of natural river sand, crushed waste oyster shells (WOS) were used to replace river sand. By replacing 20% river sand, WOS mortar with different particle sizes of WOS were made for the experiment. Through experimental observation, the initial slump and slump flow loss rate were studied. The effects of different particle sizes and curing times on the compressive strength, flexural strength, static elastic modulus, and dry shrinkage of WOS mortar were analyzed. The relationship formulas between the compressive strength, flexural strength, particle size, and

The Improving Role of Basalt Fiber on the Sulfate-Chloride Multiple Induced Degradation of Cast-In-Situ Concrete.

In salt lake areas, the cast-in-situ concrete structure has been corroded by the combination of sulfate and chloride for a long time. The incorporation of basalt fiber materials into concrete helps to improve the durability of concrete. In this paper, experiments were conducted to study the corrosion deterioration mechanisms of basalt fiber-reinforced cast-in-situ concrete under sulfate, chloride, and combined attack. The appearance, size, mass, flexural, and compressive strength of specimens were investigated during the immersion period to determine the changes in the physical and mechanical
