Tail flaring during agonism in Hummingbirds.

Bird tails in flight generate lift, reduce pressure drag, and stabilize pitch. Hummingbirds can sustain hovering in still air and generate lift in both the up- and downstroke due to their proportionally enormous primary flight muscles and derived wing skeleton. Given their mass-specific wing power, it is possible that tails are less essential to the aerodynamics of hummingbird flight than they are in other birds, freeing them for non-locomotor functions. Hummingbird tails are well known for their morphological elaboration as sexually selected ornaments, including sound generation. From informa

Avian vision: A stable view of a moving world.

Two new studies provide the clearest evidence yet that eye position is actively controlled during avian flight. Pigeons dynamically balance image stabilisation, optic-flow processing and binocular vision, suggesting that gaze control is integral to navigation, obstacle avoidance and landing.

Pectoralis muscle performance during ascending and slow level flight in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos).

In vivo measurements of pectoralis muscle length change and force production were obtained using sonomicrometry and delto-pectoral bone strain recordings during ascending and slow level flight in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). These measurements provide a description of the force/length properties of the pectoralis under dynamic conditions during two discrete flight behaviors and allow an examination of the effects of differences in body size and morphology on pectoralis performance by comparing the results with those of a recent similar study of slow level flight in pigeons (Columbia livia).

The non-specific nature of the response of mosquito flight muscle to filarial parasitization.

The significance of the histological changes induced by filarial larvae in the indirect flight muscle fibres of susceptible female mosquitoes was investigated by inflicting mechanical (needle-puncture) injury on thoracic tissues of male and female mosquitoes of various species. Mechanical injury caused the flight muscle of all mosquitoes, irrespective of species, sex or filarial susceptibility, to react in the same way as that of filaria-infected, susceptible females; other thoracic tissues responded in a similar fashion. Since these responses are closely akin to those observed by earlier auth

The influence of timeshift on circadian rhythm of sensitivity to X-irradiation in mice.

For two groups of male C3H mice an eastbound transmeridional flight was simulated by inducing a time shift of the L:D schedule of 8 hr. The assumed flight brought about a maximal reduction of the daily light and dark span, respectively. A third group remained unshifted. At seven different times during the following day, subgroups of the time shifted mice as well as of the group with unchange schedule were exposed to whole body X-irradiation. Mortality and body temperature of each animal were registered for 30 days following exposure and were regarded as indicators of radiation response. Radior

Health issues of air travel.

Every day in the United States the airline industry boards over 1.7 million passengers for a total of 600 million passengers per year. As these passengers enter the cabin of their aircraft few are aware of the artificial environment that will protect them from the hazards of flight. Passengers are exposed to reduced atmospheric pressure, reduced available oxygen, noise, vibration, and are subject to below zero temperatures that are only a quarter inch away-the thickness of the aircraft's skin. Over the past decade there have been both technical and lay articles written on the perception of poo

Using a Sound Field to Reduce the Risks of Bird-Strike: An Experimental Approach.

Each year, billions of birds collide with large human-made structures, such as building, towers, and turbines, causing substantial mortality. Such bird-strike, which is projected to increase, poses risks to populations of birds and causes significant economic costs to many industries. Mitigation technologies have been deployed in an attempt to reduce bird-strike, but have been met with limited success. One reason for bird-strike may be that birds fail to pay adequate attention to the space directly in front of them when in level, cruising flight. A warning signal projected in front of a potent

Halteres stabilize standing posture in crane flies.

All flies (Diptera) possess halteres, reduced hindwings that are active mechanosensory organs. Halteres are necessary for flight control in all winged flies, and many taxa also oscillate their halteres during non-flight behaviors. The functions of these oscillations and their resulting sensory input are unknown. We tracked the large halteres of crane flies (Tipulidae) during free, standing behaviors and found that halteres oscillate during postural adjustments, independent of wing movements. In the absence of body movements, haltere oscillations are driven by passive displacement of the legs.

The nuptial dance of male mayflies helps avoid mistaken interception by other males.

Male mayflies (Ephemeroptera) engage in oscillating nuptial flight patterns in which they climb vertically before passively parachuting downward. Males hold station above an area often in large numbers, intercepting adult females passing overhead. We reconstructed the flight behaviour of common mayfly (Ephemera vulgata) aggregations in 3D, while they were performing their nuptial dance and chasing artificial targets. Male mayflies chased any object that travelled horizontally above them and attempted to mate with it. Despite this indiscriminative chasing, we observed that male mayflies rarely

Contactless Acoustic Trapping of Hoverflies for Behavioral Studies.

Studying the sensorimotor response of flying insects is usually done in tethered conditions. The righting reflex, for example, is studied with insects that are released either from a rigid or a magnetic tether. The attached tether or magnet may, however, induce proprioceptive biases and behavioral artifacts through physical contact and additional mass or inertia. Here, we propose a contactless tether apparatus based on acoustic levitation. It relies on the emission of ultrasonic waves on both sides of the device, creating standing pressure waves-visualized using the schlieren technique-that en

Revisiting the flight dynamics of take-off of a butterfly: experiments and CFD simulations for a cabbage white butterfly.

We conducted measurements of the taking-off motion of a butterfly (Pieris rapae) and numerical simulations using a computational model reflecting its motion. The computational butterfly model is composed of a thorax, an abdomen, and four wings (left and right wings with fore and hind parts), i.e. a six-link, rigid-body system. The present model is more sophisticated than any models that have ever been constructed in existing studies. In the butterfly model, the body trajectory and thoracic pitching angle can be calculated from the equations of motion, whereas the abdominal angle and wings' joi

Impacts of fever on locust life-history traits: costs or benefits?

Fever, like other mechanisms for defence against pathogens, may have positive and negative consequences for host fitness. In ectotherms, fever can be attained through modified behavioural thermoregulation. Here we examine potential costs of behavioural fever by holding adult, gregarious desert locusts at elevated temperatures simulating a range of fever intensities. We found no effect of fever temperatures on primary fitness correlates of survival and fecundity. However, flight capacity and mate competition were reduced, although there was no relation between time spent at fever temperatures a

Behavior and performance of rhesus monkeys during Bion 11 flight.

Study of behavior and performance patterns of two Bion 11 monkeys showed that they adapted to the space environment at a different rate. Inflight, both animals successfully performed eye-head-hand coordination tasks (Program 1) and failed to complete foot pedal tasks (Program 2), although they were successful in performing Program 2 before and immediately after flight.

Pigeons lock their eyes in place during flight.

Vision in most animals follows a fixate-and-saccade pattern.1,2 Birds fixate their viewing direction, then rapidly shift this gaze through head and eye movements. We used a head-mounted eye-tracking system in flying pigeons to relate eye to head movement and map eye position within the head. After take-off, the birds increased their pupil size and adopted a fixed and consistent eye position in their heads. In different visual environments, eye position returned to within 1° of a fixed position during flight. Pigeons thus "lock" their eyes in place by actively maintaining a near-consistent eye

A quantitative muscle color metric provides a standardized measure of muscle functional state during breakdown in Gryllus lineaticeps.

Comparative and evolutionary approaches have advanced our understanding of muscle biology. However, methods for assessing muscle functional state are expensive, technically demanding and difficult to scale. Here, we developed and validated a standardized framework for quantifying insect muscle color during flight muscle breakdown, using the wing-dimorphic cricket Gryllus lineaticeps. Our color metric robustly tracks variation in muscle color across remodeling stages and predicts muscle mass, protein content and enzyme activity associated with mitochondrial abundance. By providing a standardize

Seasonal and diel flight phenology of 5 species of click beetles (Elateridae) native to eastern North America.

The work reported here summarizes research on the seasonal and diel activity periods of adult males of 3 click beetle species native to North America. Seasonal activity was assessed using panel traps baited with synthesized attractants that captured 50 males of Gambrinus griseus (Palisot de Beauvois), 397 males of its congener G. rudis (Brown) (tribe Dendrometrinae), and 131 males of Melanotus similis (Kirby) (Elaterinae). Flight periods of all 3 species were generally unimodal and confined to the summer months. Diel activity periods were assessed with attractant-baited panel traps fitted with

Energetics of free and tethered flight in bumblebees (Bombus terrestris, Linnaeus 1758).

Many insect species are reluctant to fly freely in wind tunnels, limiting direct free-flight energetics measurements to just two species. More commonly tethered-flight energetics have been investigated, though the effects of tethering on metabolic rate are unclear. Here, we report mass-specific gross metabolic rate (assessed as the rate of carbon dioxide production; [Formula: see text]) across a speed range (0-4.1 m s-1) in bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) workers during tethered and free flight in a closed-circuit wind tunnel. [Formula: see text] followed a U-shaped relationship with airspeed du

Take-off mechanisms in parasitoid wasps.

High-speed video analyses of the natural behaviour of parasitoid wasps revealed three strategies used to launch the insects into the air. Which strategy is the most energy efficient? In Pteromalus puparum, 92% of take-offs by were propelled entirely by movements of the middle and hind legs, which were depressed at their coxo-trochanteral and extended at their femoro-tibial joints. The front legs left the ground first, followed by the hind legs, so that the middle legs provided the final propulsion. Second, in other species of a similar mass, Cotesia glomerata and Leptopilina boulardi, all take

Impact of descending brain neurons on the control of stridulation, walking, and flight in orthoptera.

Orthopteran insects (crickets, bushcrickets, and acridid grasshoppers) are preferred preparations for the study of the central nervous mechanisms that underlie behavior. Many of their behaviors are based on central rhythm-generating circuits located in the ganglia of the ventral nerve cord. Activities of these circuits must be coordinated and adapted to the behavioral context by sensory information, which can derive from proprioceptive or exteroceptive inputs. Information from various sensory modalities converges in yet unidentified "higher brain centers" that integrate and transform it into a
