Collapsing Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis After Kidney Transplantation: Is It a Consequence of Viral Infections?

BACKGROUND: The aim of this case study was to explore the possible link between viral infections and collapsing focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (cFSGS) in patients who underwent kidney transplantation. METHODS: This case study included 3 case reports of patients who underwent kidney transplantation. The case reports were presented clinically and pathohistologically with cFsGS as a possible consequence of viral infections. RESULTS: The first patient developed cFSGS after polymerase chain reaction for SARS-CoV2 was positive twice. He gradually developed terminal stage chronic kidney disease

Not just a chalazion-focal eyelid and orbital infection with Saksaenea vasiformis in an immunocompetent child.

We present the case of a 2-year-old immunocompetent boy who presented with subacute right-sided orbital cellulitis due to Saksaenea vasiformis infection. Initial differential diagnoses included chalazion and localized soft tissue malignancy. There was no history of trauma. Immunological review and investigations were unremarkable. He was treated with a total of 3 months of antifungal therapy. Following resolution, he had two episodes of spontaneously resolving localized eyelid erythema at 2 and 8 months.

How to Tackle Natural Focal Infections: From Risk Assessment to Vaccination Strategies.

Natural focal diseases are caused by biological agents associated with specific landscapes. The natural focus of such diseases is defined as any natural ecosystem containing the pathogen's population as an essential component. In such context, the agent circulates independently on human presence, and humans may become accidentally infected through contact with vectors or reservoirs. Some viruses (i.e., tick-borne encephalitis and Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever virus) are paradigmatic examples of natural focal diseases. When environmental changes, increase of reservoir/vector populations, demo

The relationships of onset and exacerbation of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris to smoking and focal infections.

Clinical data, including focal infection and habitual cigarette smoking, were obtained from 203 male patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP) (age: 43.3 +/- 13.4) and 266 female patients (age: 44.0 +/- 13.7) for the 20 years from 1975 through 1994 to evaluate the relationship between the onset or severity of PPP and smoking. Seasonal incidences of onset were also studied. The incidence of onset of PPP symptoms was highest in June, when it is the most humid in Japan, and lowest in December. The most common infectious disease associated with PPP was tonsillitis. The percentages of he

Animal model of focal tonsillar infection: human tonsillar lymphocytes induce skin lesion in SCID mice.

Based mainly on clinical evidence, a concept of focal tonsillar infections affecting certain skin diseases has been established. In such disorders as pustulosis palmaris et plantaris (PPP), there have been significant improvement of clinical manifestations following tonsillectomy. However, the pathophysiological mechanism of PPP due to focal tonsillar infections has not been made clear. In order to clarify the relationship between tonsil and PPP, an in vivo experimental model of this disease was developed by reconstituting severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) mice with tonsillar lymphocytes

Morphological and immunological studies on pustulosis palmaris et plantaris, especially on its focal infection theory.

The deposition of immunoglobulins and complement was examined in skin lesions of pustulosis palmaris et plantaris by applying a direct-immunofluorescence technique. Linear deposition of IgG and C3 was demonstrated in the horny layer in 5 cases out of 10. The antikeratinlayer antibody was measured using the sera of patients with PPP, and elevated levels were recorded in patients with a maximum ratio of 1:80. Light and electron-microscopical examinations revealed a structure similar to the epidermal keratin layer of the tonsillar epidermis and phagocytosis of the structure by macrophages. This i

Pre-operative diagnosis for dermatoses due to tonsillar focal infections: recent views.

The recent views on the pre-operative diagnosis for dermatoses possibly due to tonsillar focal infections were presented as follows: 1) the range of dermatoses which may be related to tonsillar focal infection and may be indications for tonsillectomy, was introduced based on a questionnaire sent to departments of dermatology and otorhinolaryngology throughout Japan; 2) provocation test using direct stimulation with ultra-short waves and inhibition test with Impletol for the pre-operative diagnosis in patients with Pustulosis palmaris et plantaris, which appears to have a relatively high preval

Focal glomerulonephritis and interstitial nephritis in methicillin-treated, heroin-related infective endocarditis.

A drug addict with staphylococcal endocarditis treated with methicillin, who developed massive proteinuria and acute nephritic syndrome is described. Discontinuation of methicillin therapy and appropriate antibiotic treatment of endocarditis led to clinical improvement, emphasizing the need to promptly discontinue potential nephrotoxic agents when abnormalities in renal function appear. The clinical course and results of renal biopsy studies suggest multiple causes of the renal lesions in this patient.

[Usefulness of cerebral biopsy in focal cerebral lesions in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection].

Brain mass lesions (BML) occurred in 10% of patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as expression of severe and sometimes treatable diseases. However, the management of them is not well established. We analyzed, retrospectively, 26 brain biopsies (22 estereotaxic) in patients with HIV infection and BML to know their usefulness and safety. The inclusion criteria were: Failure of the anti-Toxoplasma empirical treatment, atypical scan appearance for toxoplasmosis, or severe neurological picture. Brain biopsy yielded a diagnosis in 19 patients (73.1%): Progressive multifocal l

[An aetiological study on pustulosis palmaris et plantaris due to tonsillar focal infection (author's transl)].

In clarification of the cause of Pustulosis palmaris et plantaris caused by tonsillar infection 19 patients with this condition and undergoing tonsillectomy were studied. IgE levels in the tonsils and blood serum were estimated both before and after tonsillectomy including various other laboratory tests. These results and the therapeutic effects of the tonsillectomy were analysed. 42 patients with tonsillitis undergoing tonsillectomy were used as controls. Lowered serum complement (C3) titres and decrease in neutrophil counts and serum IgG levels were observed in those patients whose cutaneous

Etiologic diagnosis of focal pulmonary infection in immunocompromised patients by fluoroscopically guided percutaneous needle aspiration.

Fluoroscopically guided percutaneous needle aspiration of focal pulmonary lesions was performed in 108 presumed infectious episodes in 82 immunocompromised patients in whom prior diagnostic studies, including transtracheal aspiration, were negative to inconclusive. Two-thirds of the lesions were 4 cm or smaller. Single (61/79) or multiple (18/79) organisms were recovered, for a diagnostic yield of 73% (79/108). Complications were pneumothorax (26%), half of which required tube drainage, and limited hemoptysis (3%). This technique can be quickly performed and frequently repeated with existing p

Development of a chronic focal equine arteritis virus infection of a male reproductive tract cell line.

Equine arteritis virus (EAV) is an Alphaarterivirus (family Arteriviridae, order Nidovirales) that frequently causes an influenza-like illness in adult horses, but can also cause the abortions in mares and death of newborn foals. Once primary infection has been established, EAV can persist in the reproductive tract of some stallions. However, the mechanisms enabling this persistence, which depends on testosterone, remain largely unknown. We aimed to establish an in vitro model of non-cytopathic EAV infection to study viral persistence. In this work, we infected several cell lines originating f

A presumed case of new-onset focal seizures as a delayed complication of COVID-19 infection.

Previously seizures have been reported as presenting neurological manifestation with COVID-19 infection. There is a growing literature on the delayed neurologic effects of COVID-19 infection. Here, we report a case with insidious onset of focal impaired awareness seizures associated with left temporal epileptiform interictal and ictal discharges consistent with focal epilepsy; occurring within a short time frame of the diagnosis of COVID-19 infection. This may be possibly a post COVID-19 inflammatory syndrome manifesting as new onset focal epilepsy with focal non-motor seizures with impaired a

Oral inflammatory process and general health. Part 1: The focal infection and the oral inflammatory lesion.

A focal infection is a localized or generalized infection caused by the dissemination of microorganisms or toxic products from a focus of infection in various organic districts, including the oral district. In the Part 1 of this two-part review article, after historical signs, the Authors describe the current pathogenic concepts like the "immuno-allergic theory" and the formation of auto-antibodies in human body, contributing to the genesis of autoimmune illnesses sustained by individual reactivity linked to eredo-constitutionality. Some theories suppose a focal origin even for general patholo
