Trichomonas vaginalis could not be isolated from the water of a highly frequented swimming pool of the City of Zurich. The protozoon T. vaginalis may show a slight degree of motility; even after 20 minutes exposure to the chlorinated water of a swimming pool; but it looses its infectivity within seconds after exposure to water of the swimming pool. It is not yet known how trichomonads are able to survive in the secretions of the vagina and on contaminated objects (fomites) in dressing rooms.

INTRODUCTION: The environmental resilience and exogenous transmission dynamics of Candida auris (C. auris) pose persistent challenges for nosocomial infection control, and current international guidelines rely heavily on episodic chemical disinfection. Therefore, this study aims to mathematically quantify the operational efficacy of these standard, guideline-based infection protocols compared against advanced, proactive containment strategies.
METHODS: A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted util

BACKGROUND: Millions of people are infested by head lice every year. However, louse transfer between hosts is not well-understood. Our goals were to determine: (1) which stages were most likely to disperse and why, (2) the likelihood of fomites transmission, and (3) if host blood gender affects louse development.
METHODS: Various life stages of lice at differing densities were permitted to cross over a 15-cm hair bridge placed between two artificial blood-feeding arenas. Louse transfer caused by hot air movements, combing, toweling, and passive transfer to fabric was investigated. The ability

Bunyamwera virus (BUNV) (Bunyamwera orthobunyavirus) has been found in Sub-Saharan Africa and demonstrated recently as cocirculating with Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV). Little is known regarding the breadth of transmission modalities of Bunyamwera. Given its co-occurence with RVFV, we hypothesized the transmission system of BUNV shared similarities to the RVFV system including transmission by Ae. aegypti mosquitoes and environmentally mediated transmission through fomites and environmental contamination. We exposed Ae. aegypti mosquitoes to BUNV and evaluated their ability to transmit both ve

OBJECTIVE: Frequently touched public surfaces represent fomites. Interestingly, little is known about the microbial contamination of self-ordering touchscreens in fast food restaurants, despite the fact that food is usually consumed with hands shortly after ordering. To bridge this gap, we investigated the bacterial load of self-ordering touchscreens by surface sampling and subsequent identification of dominant morphotypes using MALDI-biotyping. We repeatedly (n = 5) sampled touchscreens in three different restaurants in the greater area of Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany, at times of low (≤ 5

This study aims to assess the risk of fomite transmission of non-enveloped viruses from different hairstyles and hair types by evaluating shower-out practices used at various biocontainment levels. An example of a non-enveloped virus is Foot and Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV), a contagious pathogen of livestock. Due to its infectivity and environmental stability, outbreaks can lead to catastrophic economic losses. To conduct the study at a lower biocontainment level, we used Bovine Rhinitis B virus (BRBV), a genetically closely related surrogate for FMDV. First, we assessed the inactivation capaci

The detection of surface microbial contaminants faces several critical challenges, including disconnection between sampling and detection steps and time-consuming. To overcome these limitations, we developed an innovative integrated microfluidic system that combines bacterial sampling, transfer, concentration, and detection within a single chip platform. The microchip architecture consists of a thermos-responsive flexible sheet incorporating poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) gel micropillar arrays for efficient bacterial capture and thermal-triggered release, and a PDMS cover layer with an

Tinea pedis is a common chronic skin disease. The role of contaminated clothes as a possible source of reinfection is not fully understood. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of domestic laundering at different temperatures in the eradication of fungal pathogens from contaminated socks. Samples from 81 socks worn by patients suffering from tinea pedis underwent domestic laundering at either 40 °C or 60 °C. The socks were dried at room temperature; fungal cultures were taken from two samples from, respectively, the toe and heel areas of the socks. Samples from socks washed at 40

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recommended contact precautions for healthcare personnel caring for COVID-19 patients since the beginning of the pandemic. However, current scientific evidence points to transmission through small respiratory droplets or aerosols and not contaminated fomites as the dominant routes of transmission of SARS-CoV-2. We believe science shows there is no benefit and thus only negative consequences to patients, the environment, and the U.S healthcare system associated with ongoing contact precautions for patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, and we advo

We report three cases of severe hypertrichosis in healthy infants, who did not present any type of endocrinological pathology and whose parents used topical minoxidil for the treatment of their baldness. Any type of direct application or administration of the product was ruled out. Hypertrichosis is considered to have occurred through skin-to-skin contact with the parent, and even through fomites. Given the widespread use of topical minoxidil, it is likely that this etiology of childhood hypertrichosis is underdiagnosed and that it sometimes leads to minimal forms that go unnoticed.

In October 2014 the UK military deployed to Sierra Leone to provide care for healthcare workers affected by Ebola virus disease. A training package designed by the Army Medical Services Training Centre prepared the deploying personnel in the required infection prevention and control measures. The training used ultraviolet tracer to provide validation of the skills required when treating patients with Ebola and to confirm subsequent decontamination. This training construct provided useful feedback to clinicians on their infection control measures and would be useful in the context of any infect

Molluscum contagiosum is a viral disease that presents in a primary care setting as single or multiple wart-like lesions. We have seen an outbreak of Molluscum contagiosum in a small rural community, affecting 34 individuals. The most infected were children two-to nine-years-old. The diagnosis was made on clinical grounds. Spread appeared to be as a result of direct contact and by fomites. There was no evidence, in our study, of spread via swimming pool. Cryosurgery was used to treat our patients with Molluscum contagiosum.

BACKGROUND: The aetiology of the major outbreak of COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) in India in spring 2021 remains incompletely understood. Herein, we provide a multifaceted and multi-institutional analysis of clinical, pathogen-related, environmental and healthcare-related factors during CAM outbreak in the metropolitan New Delhi area.
METHODS: We reviewed medical records of all patients diagnosed with biopsy-proven CAM (n = 50) at 7 hospitals in the New Delhi, and NCR area in April-June 2021. Two multivariate logistic regression models were used to compare clinical characteristics of

Molluscum contagiosum is a disease caused by a poxvirus of the Molluscipox virus genus that produces a benign self-limited papular eruption of multiple umbilicated cutaneous tumors. This common viral disease is confined to the skin and mucous membranes. Transmission requires direct contact with infected hosts or contaminated fomites. It is generally thought to infect humans exclusively, but there are a few isolated reports of Molluscum contagiosum occurring in chickens, sparrows, pigeons, chimpanzees, kangaroos, a dog, and a horse. The infection is found worldwide and has a higher incidence in

The susceptibility of the English and Welsh fish farming and fisheries industry to emergent diseases is assessed using a stochastic simulation model. The model dynamics operate on a network comprising directed transport and river contacts, as well as undirected local and fomite transmissions. The directed connections cause outward transmission risk to be geographically more confined than inward risk. We consider reactive, proactive, and hybrid methods of control which correspond to a mixture of policy and the ease of disease detection. An explicit investigation of the impact of laboratory capa

Scabies is a mite infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. Varieties of this organism can produce disease on 40 different species of animal, including humans. The organisms mature, burrow, and lay eggs. The newly hatched larvae mature and mate on the skin, causing itching and excoriated papules on humans, and mange, with crusts and oozing, on hair-bearing animals. Treatment with the gamma isomer of hexachlorobenzene or with pyrethrins is effective. Care must be taken that all infected or exposed individuals are treated. The role of fomites in the transmission of the disease is not clear. Most

Monkeypox virus (MPXV), the etiologic agent of mpox, is an enveloped DNA virus that may persist on various surfaces, contributing to fomite-mediated transmission. The ongoing global outbreak of mpox has highlighted an urgent need to understand the environmental stability of MPXV. This study investigates the stability of MPXV on surfaces encountered in clinical settings. The persistence of viable MPXV and viral DNA was evaluated using porous (gauze, cotton, and scrubs), and nonporous (stainless steel, polypropylene plastic, intravenous tubing, N95 masks, and nitrile gloves) materials. Surfaces

The transmission bottleneck, defined as the number of viruses that transmit from one host to infect another, is an important determinant of the rate of virus evolution and the level of immunity required to protect against virus transmission. Despite its importance, SARS-CoV-2's transmission bottleneck remains poorly characterized, in part due to a lack of quantitative measurement tools. To address this, we adapted a SARS-CoV-2 reverse genetics system to generate a pool of >200 isogenic SARS-CoV-2 viruses harboring specific 6-nucleotide barcodes inserted in ORF10, a non-translated ORF. We direc

BACKGROUND: High-level disinfection protects tens-of-millions of patients from the transmission of viruses on reusable medical devices. The efficacy of high-level disinfectants for preventing human papillomavirus (HPV) transmission has been called into question by recent publications, which if true, would have significant public health implications.
METHODS: Evaluation of the clinical relevance of these published findings required the development of novel methods to quantify and compare: (i) Infectious titres of lab-produced, clinically-sourced, and animal-derived papillomaviruses, (ii) The p

Semicritical medical devices are defined as items that come into contact with mucous membranes or nonintact skin (eg, gastrointestinal endoscopes, endocavitary probes). Such medical devices require minimally high-level disinfection. As many of these items are temperature sensitive, low-temperature chemical methods must be used rather than steam sterilization. Strict adherence to current guidelines is required as more outbreaks have been linked to inadequately cleaned or disinfected endoscopes and other semicritical items than any other reusable medical devices.
