Leptin, but not ghrelin, is associated with food addiction scores in a population-based subject sample.

BACKGROUND: Ghrelin and leptin are both peptide hormones and act as opposing players in the regulation of hunger, satiety and energy expenditure. Leptin reduces appetite and feelings of hunger and is secreted mainly by adipocytes, while ghrelin increases appetite and food intake and reduces metabolic rate. Both hormones have been implicated in addictive disorders. Ghrelin was shown to have pro-addictive effects while leptin's role in addiction yields more conflicting results. Their involvement in the regulation of both food intake and addictive behaviors make them interesting candidates when i

Food addiction: is it a nosological category or a psychopathological dimension? Preliminary results of an Italian study.

Background Food addiction (FA) is a controversial concept, denoting the craving for certain foods. Given the little information available, the aim of this study was to evaluate the possible relationships between FA and full-blown and subthreshold psychopathology or eating behaviors in subjects consulting nutritional biologists. Materials and methods Three-hundred and fifty subjects completed the following self-questionnaires: Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS), Structured Clinical Interview for Mood Spectrum, Self-Report, Lifetime Version (MOOD-SR-LT), Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), St

Food Addiction: definition, measurement and prevalence in healthy subjects and in patients with eating disorders.

The construct of “Food Addiction” (FA) has been introduced in the last decades to better understand abnormal eating patterns in obese and overweight people and in patients with Eating Disorders (EDs). Despite a substantial parallelism between drug addiction and FA, there is still no agreement in considering FA an independent ED or a useful convincing concept. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to aggregate available data, in order to increase knowledge about: 1) definition, measurement and general features of FA; 2) prevalence of FA in clinical and non-clinical samples. Available data su

Anthropometric, Nutritional, and Lifestyle Factors Involved in Predicting Food Addiction: An Agnostic Machine Learning Approach.

Food addiction (FA) is an emerging psychiatric condition that presents behavioral and neurobiological similarities with other addictions, and its early identification is essential to prevent the development of more severe disorders. The aim of the present study was to determine the ability of anthropometric measures, eating habits, symptoms related to eating disorders (ED), and lifestyle features to predict the symptoms of food addiction. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 702 university students (77.3% women; age: 22 ± 6 years). The Food Frequency Questionnaire

Dietary intakes among people with vs without food addiction: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Individuals with food addiction (FA) may experience addictive behaviours like those observed in other substances of abuse, which may affect their dietary intake habits. In fact, previous studies have reported associations between FA and dietary patterns, but this evidence has not been quantitatively summarised before. Therefore, this study aimed to explore differences in dietary intakes among adults with vs without food addiction. METHODS: A systematic-review and meta-analysis was conducted. Interventional or observational studies evaluating dietary intakes associated with

Psychobiological factors influencing physical activity and body composition in young adults: Chronotype and food addiction.

Chronotype and food addiction are key psychobiological factors related to physical activity, dietary patterns, and body composition in young adults. However, their combined associations with body structure remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to holistically examine the relationships of chronotype and food addiction with physical activity and body composition among university students. A total of 582 participants (294 women, 288 men; M = 20.78 ± 2.69 y) were assessed using a cross-sectional design. Chronotype was measured with the Morningness - Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ), food

Food Addiction among Female Patients Seeking Treatment for an Eating Disorder: Prevalence and Associated Factors.

The concept of "food addiction" (FA) has aroused much focus because of evidence for similarities between overeating and substance use disorders (SUDs). However, few studies have explored this concept among the broad spectrum of eating disorders (ED), especially in anorexia nervosa (AN). This study aimed to assess FA prevalence in ED female patients and to determine its associated factors. We recruited a total of 195 adult women with EDs from an ED treatment center. The prevalence of FA diagnosis (Yale Food Addiction Scale) in the whole ED sample was 83.6%; AN restrictive type (AN-R), 61.5%; AN

Use of Preclinical Drug vs. Food Choice Procedures to Evaluate Candidate Medications for Cocaine Addiction.

Drug addiction is a disease that manifests as an inappropriate allocation of behavior towards the procurement and use of the abused substance and away from other behaviors that produce more adaptive reinforcers (e.g. exercise, work, family and social relationships). The goal of treating drug addiction is not only to decrease drug-maintained behaviors, but also to promote a reallocation of behavior towards alternative, nondrug reinforcers. Experimental procedures that offer concurrent access to both a drug reinforcer and an alternative, nondrug reinforcer provide a research tool for assessment

Associations between food addiction symptoms, food intake and BMI-for-age in children from a low-income region: A structural equation modeling approach.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food addiction (FA) is characterized by the presence of dependence symptoms associated with the consumption of calorie-rich, sugary, and fatty foods, typical of ultra-processed foods. The growing prevalence of childhood obesity has been linked to the increased consumption of ultra-processed foods. This study aimed to analyze the direct and indirect associations between FA symptoms, food consumption, and body mass index for age (BMI-for-age) in children from 7 to 10 years of age from a Brazilian low-income region. SUBJECTS/METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted,

The burden of overweight/obesity and weight-related behaviors attributable to food addiction in emerging adults.

While food addiction has been positively associated with excess weight and disordered eating behaviors, this has not been examined in representative samples of emerging adults, who are at elevated risk for these outcomes. This study investigated relationships of food addiction with weight outcomes, weight perception, and weight-control behaviors in emerging adults and estimated the population attributable fraction to food addiction. Data from an observational cohort study were collected in seven annual waves from 2010 to 2016. A nationally representative sample of 2785 10th grade students was

Plasma concentration of leptin is related to food addiction in gambling disorder: Clinical and neuropsychological implications.

BACKGROUND: Data implicate overlaps in neurobiological pathways involved in appetite regulation and addictive disorders. Despite different neuroendocrine measures having been associated with both gambling disorder (GD) and food addiction (FA), how appetite-regulating hormones may relate to the co-occurrence of both entities remain incompletely understood. AIMS: To compare plasma concentrations of ghrelin, leptin, adiponectin, and liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide 2 (LEAP-2) between patients with GD, with and without FA, and to explore the association between circulating hormonal concentra

Childhood trauma in obese and overweight women with food addiction and clinical-level of binge eating.

Childhood trauma (CT) is considered a major risk factor for several disorders as well as for the development of eating psychopathology and adult obesity. The main aims of the present study were to assess in overweight and obese women: (i) the independent association between CT and food addiction (FA), and (ii) CT in patients with both FA and clinical-level of binge eating (BE), versus patients who only engage in FA or BE. Participants were 301 overweight and obese women seeking low-energy-diet therapy. All of the patients were administered self-report measures investigating FA, BE, CT, anxiety

Posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and food addiction in women by timing and type of trauma exposure.

IMPORTANCE: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) appears to increase obesity risk but the pathways by which PTSD leads to weight gain are not known. Identification of the links between PTSD and obesogenic eating behaviors is necessary to clarify this pathway and inform development of obesity prevention strategies in PTSD-affected populations. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether women with PTSD symptoms are more likely to report food addiction, a measure of perceived dependence on food, than women without PTSD symptoms. Also, to determine whether age at PTSD symptom onset and type of trauma influe
