Material deprivation among informal caregivers: a literature review on housing, food insecurity, and harmful effects on health.

INTRODUCTION: Inflation and rising living costs are significant global issues impacting vulnerable groups, including informal caregivers. While it is known that informal caregiving may pose potential negative health effects, social inequalities associated with it are not well understood. AIM: This study aims to explore the material deprivation - specifically housing and food insecurity - faced by informal caregivers and the harmful effects this can have on health to inform future actions. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review to explore the impact of material deprivation on informal caregiv

Reduction in channel catfish hepatic growth hormone receptor expression in response to food deprivation and exogenous cortisol.

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of food deprivation and exogenous cortisol administration on somatic growth of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and examine the resultant changes in circulating insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) concentrations and growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene expression. Integral to this objective, we report the isolation, sequence, and characterization of channel catfish GHR. Sequence analysis and characterization results indicate sequence identity and tissue distribution similar to GHRs in other teleost fish and several functional characteri

Food deprivation increases apoptotic cell counts induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in rat descending colonic and rectal crypts.

The frequency of apoptosis after treatment with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) was counted in the descending colonic and rectal crypts of food-deprived and fed rats. Food-deprived or fed rats were subcutaneously injected with DMH (100 mg/kg body weight). Six hours after the injection, apoptotic cells were observed in crypt regions by light microscopy. The incidence of DMH-induced apoptosis in food-deprived rats was significantly higher than in fed rats. The incidence appeared to be higher in descending colon than in rectum. PAS staining revealed that DMH treatment lowered mucin secretion in crypt

Paraventricular nucleus-microinjected glucose increases food intake in 18 h food-deprived rats: A central regulatory mechanism on serum ghrelin and leptin levels.

Our previous study demonstrated that glucose acts in hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) to increase gastric acid secretion. However, there is no evidence to show the role of the hypothalamic PVN-microinjected glucose on food intake. On the other hand, it is known that ghrelin and leptin play important roles in food intake. The current study investigated the association between PVN-microinjected glucose and food intake and plasma ghrelin-leptin levels. After the PVN microinjection of glucose, food intake was measured. In other groups, ELIZA kits were used to obtain ghrelin, leptin, insu

Rats do not eat alone in public: Food-deprived rats socialize rather than competing for baits.

Limited resources result in competition among social animals. Nevertheless, social animals also have innate preferences for cooperative behavior. In the present study, 12 dyads of food-deprived rats were tested in four successive trials, and then re-tested as eight triads of food-deprived rats that were unfamiliar to each other. We found that the food-deprived dyads or triads of rats did not compete for the food available to them at regular spatially-marked locations that they had previously learnt. Rather, these rats traveled together to collect the baits. One rat, or two rats in some triads,

Effects of isolated tobacco alkaloids and tobacco products on deprivation-induced food intake and meal patterns in rats.

The ability of smoking to reduce body weight serves as motivation for continued smoking. It is unclear to what extent non-nicotine constituents in cigarettes are contributing to the weight-reducing effect of smoking. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of nicotine and four minor tobacco alkaloids (nornicotine, cotinine, anatabine, and anabasine) on food intake, one of the key regulators of body weight. In addition, a smokeless tobacco extract (STE) and e-cigarette (EC) refill liquid were used to model the effects of actual tobacco product exposure on food intake. Male H

LH and testosterone production are more sensitive to the suppressive effects of food deprivation in prenatally undernourished male rats.

Although prenatal undernutrition affects the development of metabolic, physiological, and reproductive functions, it remains unclear whether it also affects physiological responses to undernutrition in adulthood. Therefore, in this study we examined whether prenatal undernutrition alters the sensitivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis to fasting in adult male rats. The offspring of ad libitum fed dams (control) and ∼50% food-restricted (during the late gestational period) dams (IUGR) were sub-divided into ad libitum fed (fed) and 48 h food deprivation (FD) groups at 10 weeks o

A limited role for ghrelin in heroin self-administration and food deprivation-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking in rats.

Food deprivation (FD) or restriction augments the locomotor activating and reinforcing effects of drugs of abuse. It has been proposed that these effects might be mediated by FD-induced increase in plasma levels of ghrelin, a 28-amino acid orexigenic peptide demonstrated to functionally interact with the mesolimbic dopaminergic system. However, a role for ghrelin has been demonstrated only with psychostimulant drugs and alcohol associated behaviors. We therefore examined the role of ghrelin in ongoing heroin self-administration and FD-induced reinstatement of extinguished heroin seeking. As ex

Effects of short-term food deprivation on orexin-A-induced intestinal bicarbonate secretion in comparison with related secretagogues.

Studies of gastrointestinal physiology in humans and intact animals are usually conducted after overnight fast. We compared the effects of orexin-A, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), melatonin, serotonin, uroguanylin, ghrelin and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) on duodenal bicarbonate secretion in fed and overnight fasted animals. This review is a summary of our findings. Secretagogues were administered by intra-arterial infusion or luminally (PGE(2)). Enterocyte intracellular calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) signalling was studied by fluorescence imaging. Total RNA was extracted, reverse transcripted

Food deprivation and refeeding effects on pineal indoles metabolism and melatonin synthesis in the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss.

The effects of food deprivation and refeeding on daily rhythms of serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and melatonin contents, as well as on arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT) activity were evaluated in the pineal organ of rainbow trout. In addition, changes in circulating melatonin and cortisol levels were tested at one single point at day and night. Immature rainbow trout were distributed in 3 experimental groups: fish fed, fish fasted (7 days), and fish fasted for 7 days and refed for 5 days. All fish were sampled from each treatment group at different times of the

Food deprivation-like effects of neuropeptide Y on heroin self-administration and reinstatement of heroin seeking in rats.

Numerous findings suggest that drug seeking and ingestive behaviors share common neurobiological mechanisms, but the relevant pathways are unknown. Dietary manipulations result in changes in endocrine the and/or neuropeptide signals, such as the hormones leptin and ghrelin, which are dynamically linked to energy balance and the regulation of feeding behavior. We have recently demonstrated that food deprivation-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking can be blocked with leptin, and others have suggested a role for ghrelin in drug-related behaviors. The feeding-relevant effects of leptin and ghr

Predation, aggression, and activity levels in food-deprived sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus and L. gibbosus): motivational interactions.

Three experiments investigated the effects of food deprivation on several behavioral categories in two species of sunfish. In Experiment 1, predatory behavior and general activity were observed under five levels of deprivation. For both species, predation measures increased in a similar negatively accelerating manner with increasing deprivation, while activity changed in a more complex fashion. Experiment 2 examined the effects of deprivation on activity in a novel environment and showed that the deprivation effects of Experiment 1 were masked by the response to the new setting. In Experiment

Acute food deprivation-induced relapse to heroin seeking after short and long punishment-imposed abstinence in male rats.

RATIONAL: Stress is a major trigger for drug relapse in humans and animal models, even after prolonged abstinence. However, animal models for stress-induced relapse were criticized for the lack of predictive and face validity. OBJECTIVES: Here we investigated the effect of acute food deprivation stress in a novel stress-induced relapse model using voluntary, punishment-imposed abstinence from heroin. We also performed a detailed characterization of the development of punishment-imposed abstinence. METHODS: Male rats were trained to self-administered heroin (0.1 mg/kg/infusion) for 2 weeks, u

Acute food deprivation separates motor-activating from anxiolytic effects of caffeine in a rat open field test model.

Similar doses of caffeine have been shown to produce either anxiolytic or anxiogenic effects in rats. The reasons for these conflicting results are not known. We hypothesized that food deprivation stress interacts with the stimulant effects of caffeine to increase anxiety-like behavior. We tested 32 female Sprague Dawley rats in a dim open field for 10 min. Half of the animals were food deprived for 24 h and injected (intraperitoneal) with caffeine (30 mg/kg; n=7) or deionized water (n=8) 20 min before the open field test. The other half was nondeprived and injected with caffeine (30 mg/kg; n=

Unraveling vasotocinergic, isotocinergic and stress pathways after food deprivation and high stocking density in the gilthead sea bream.

The influence of chronic stress, induced by food deprivation (FD) and/or high stocking density (HSD), was assessed on stress, vasotocinergic and isotocinergic pathways of the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata). Fish were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: (1) fed at low stocking density (LSD-F; 5kg·m-3); (2) fed at high stocking density (HSD-F, 40kg·m-3); (3) food-deprived at LSD (LSD-FD); and (4) food-deprived at HSD (HSD-FD). After 21days, samples from plasma, liver, hypothalamus, pituitary and head-kidney were collected. Both stressors (FD and HSD) induced a chronic stres

Effects of sleep or food deprivation during civilian survival training on cognition, blood glucose and 3-OH-butyrate.

OBJECTIVES: The study was designed to compare effects of food deprivation (FD) and sleep deprivation (SD) on cognition during survival training. METHODS: In a cross-over design (n=12), the effects of FD (up to 66 hours followed by 500 kcal intake over 24 hours) and SD (up to 50 hours) on cognitive variables, blood glucose, and 3-OH-butyrate were studied. RESULTS: Food deprivation and SD impaired attention-dependent tasks. The FD impairment of simple reaction time was independent of blood glucose levels, which were normalized by a 500 kcal intake over 24 hours while the reaction time was not.

Effects of random food deprivation and refeeding on energy metabolism, behavior and hypothalamic neuropeptide expression in Apodemus chevrieri.

Maintaining adaptive control of behavior and physiology is the main strategy used by animals in responding to changes of food resources. To investigate the effects of random food deprivation (FD) and refeeding on energy metabolism and behavior in Apodemus chevrieri, we acclimated adult males to FD for 4weeks, then refed them ad libitum for 4weeks (FD-Re group). During the period of FD, animals were fed ad libitum for 4 randomly assigned days each week, and deprived of food the other 3days. A control group was fed ad libitum for 8weeks. At 4 and 8weeks we measured body mass, thermogenesis, seru

A role for dopamine D1-like receptors in acute food deprivation-induced reinstatement of heroin seeking in rats.

Dopamine has a critical role in drug reinforcement and the reinstatement of drug seeking due to priming or exposure to drug-associated cues. In contrast, the role of dopamine in stress-induced reinstatement is not clear. We have previously demonstrated that acute food deprivation, a clinically relevant stressor, reinstates heroin seeking in rats via a leptin-dependent mechanism. Recent reports have suggested a modulating role for leptin on dopamine transmission and drug-related behaviours. Thus, here we investigated the role of dopamine in acute food deprivation-induced reinstatement of heroin
