SNMP1 Contributes to Sensitive Pheromone and Plant Volatile Detection in the Locust Olfactory System.

In holometabolous insects, such as flies and moths, the sensory neuron membrane protein 1 (SNMP1) has been primarily linked to the olfactory detection of long-chain aliphatic pheromones, but whether it plays an important role in receiving other chemical cues is largely unknown. Here, comparing electroantennogram (EAG) recordings of wild-type (WT) and SNMP1-deficient (SNMP1-/-) hemimetabolous desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria), we found that mutant animals showed significantly reduced responses to several pheromones and plant odorants belonging to different classes of aromatic and aliphatic

Using participatory methods to develop context-specific local government actions to create healthy food and physical activity environments for school-aged children: a case study in Flanders.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood overweight and obesity represent major public health concerns globally, influenced by food and physical activity environments. In the absence of strong national or regional policies, there has been an increasing interest from local government jurisdictions to address obesity. This study aimed to apply three distinct participatory methods to engage different community groups in a medium size, socio-economically deprived municipality in Flanders (Belgium), to identify context-specific barriers and facilitators to healthy eating and physical activity from the perspective o

A Multimodal Lifestyle and Mind-Body Intervention in Rural Primary Care: Implications for Metaflammation in an Appalachian Population.

BACKGROUND: Chronic metabolic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and mood disorders frequently cluster in under-resourced communities. Increasing evidence suggests these conditions may be influenced by persistent low-grade systemic inflammation (sometimes referred to as metaflammation), as well as cumulative physiologic stress and environmental constraints. Rural Appalachian populations experience a disproportionate burden of these conditions, often compounded by poverty, food deserts, limited healthcare access, and restricted availability of preventive services. OBJECTI

Race and Risk: Disentangling the Racialized Distribution of Neighborhood Resources and Differential Health Risks in Southern U.S. Cities.

Neighborhood-level resource availability is a key determinant of population health. Racial capitalism and disinvestment shape the spatial distribution of essential health-promoting neighborhood resources, yet few studies consider the conjuncture of resource scarcity type and race and class composition in shaping chronic disease outcomes. This study addresses this gap by analyzing 3,011 urban neighborhoods in the southern United States to examine: (1) the sociodemographic correlates of distinct types of resource scarcity, and (2) the associations between those scarcity types and five chronic he

Rationale and Design of the Groceries for Black Residents of Boston to Stop Hypertension Among Adults Without Treated Hypertension (GoFresh) Trial.

BACKGROUND: Poor diet quality significantly contributes to hypertension disparities affecting Black adults. While the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating pattern lowers blood pressure (BP), access to DASH-patterned groceries is a major barrier for residents of urban food deserts. METHODS: The Groceries for Black Residents of Boston to Stop Hypertension among Adults without Treated Hypertension (GoFresh) study is one of five projects in the RESTORE Network, an AHA-funded initiative focused on hypertension prevention. GoFresh is testing whether online, dietitian-assisted, home

Climate, habitats, and food resources-Environmental influences on early human occupation in the Nihewan Basin, East Asia.

Over the past century, the Nihewan Basin is a key area for studying Quaternary environmental changes and hominin adaptations in East Asia and has served as a vital region for exploring the evolution of early human cultures. However, the insufficient research on human-environment interactions in this region has hindered a comprehensive understanding of hominin evolutionary processes. Here, we quantify climatic variations, reconstruct ecosystem landscapes, analyze the richness of food taxa potentially exploitable by hominins, and evaluate environmental impacts on human activities in the Nihewan

Body size development of captive and free-ranging Leopard tortoises (Geochelone pardalis).

The growth and weight development of Leopard tortoise hatchings (Geochelone pardalis) kept at the Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP), Qatar, was observed for more than four years, and compared to data in literature for free-ranging animals on body weight or carapace measurements. The results document a distinctively faster growth in the captive animals. Indications for the same phenomenon in other tortoise species (Galapagos giant tortoises, G. nigra; Spur-thighed tortoises, Testudo graeca; Desert tortoises, Gopherus agassizi) were found in the literature. The cause of the high growth rate

Desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria) feed with self-sharpening, scissor-like mandibles.

The mandibles of the desert locust Schistocerca gregaria (Forsskål, 1775) are digger-shovel-shaped mouthparts that are part of the locust's exoskeleton formed by the insect cuticle. The cuticle is a polymer-fibre composite, which supports, encases and protects the entire body. Mandibles experience heavy loading and wear due to direct contact with hard and abrasive food, just like teeth, their mineralized analogues in vertebrates. With dual-energy X-ray tomography, we image well-defined regions of zinc (Zn)-enriched cuticle at the mandible cutting edges and quantify the Zn concentrations in the

The AI health divide: Three challenges and recommendations to improve design, transparency, and access for low-SES communities.

BackgroundLow socioeconomic status (SES) communities have been historically disadvantaged by food deserts, limited health and digital literacy, and restricted access to healthcare and digital technologies. These factors have increased the prevalence of chronic disease and contributed to reduced engagement with healthcare systems. Alongside this, the rapid increase in popularity of Artificial Intelligence (AI), integration into healthcare systems such as patient portals, symptom checkers, and care coordination platforms has become commonplace. However, the incorporation of AI assumes inflated l

Seasonal variations in the function of the endocrine pancreas in Psammomys obesus.

The aim of this work was to determine whether Psammomys obesus living in its natural habitat displays variation in the function of the endocrine pancreas. Live animals were collected regularly through the year by strip sampling. Plasma glucose varied during the year. Glucose levels were higher in periods I and III (autumn and spring) than in periods II and IV (winter and summer). Pancreatic insulin contents were higher in periods I and II than in periods III and IV. Plasma insulin also varied with the season in synchrony with glucose variations except during period IV, in which elevated levels

A desert ant's memory of recent visual experience and the control of route guidance.

Insects such as desert ants learn stereotyped visual routes between their nests and reliable food sites. Studies here reveal an important control element for ensuring that the route memories are used appropriately. They find that visual route memories can be disengaged, so that they do not provide guidance, even when all appropriate visual cues are present and when there are no competing guidance cues. Ants were trained along a simple route dominated by a single isolated landmark. If returning ants were caught just before entering the nest and replaced at the feeder, then they often interrupte

Habitat use by female desert tortoises suggests tradeoffs between resource use and risk avoidance.

Animals may select habitat to maximize the benefits of foraging on growth and reproduction, while balancing competing factors like the risk of predation or mortality from other sources. Variation in the distribution of food resources may lead animals to forage at times or in places that carry greater predation risk, with individuals in poor quality habitats expected to take greater risks while foraging. We studied Mojave desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) in habitats with variable forage availability to determine if risk aversion in their selection of habitat relative was related to abundan

Physiologic, Psychological, Nutritional, and Rest-Activity Observations During 120 Days of Low-Tech Off-Grid Living in the Baja California Desert: A 2-Participant Field Case Study.

Off-grid low-tech living is increasingly proposed for arid environments, yet longitudinal field data documenting health, nutrition, and rest-activity organization under real-world conditions remain scarce. Our objective was to describe physiologic, nutritional, psychological, and rest-activity trajectories during 120 d of low-tech off-grid desert living. This was a prospective observational case study of 2 participants (female, 29 y old; male, 39 y old) conducted in Baja California (January-April 2023). Pre-, mid-, and post-mission assessments included bioimpedance body composition, incrementa

Flavonoid-mediated inhibition of ovarian glutathione S-transferase in Schistocerca gregaria: Biochemical characterization and in vitro evaluation.

The desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria, remains one of the most destructive agricultural pests, posing a serious threat to crop production and food security. Current control strategies rely heavily on synthetic insecticides, raising concerns about environmental contamination and the development of insecticide resistance. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are major phase II detoxification enzymes involved in xenobiotic metabolism and insecticide tolerance; however, their physiological role in reproductive tissues remains poorly understood. This study aimed to purify and characterize ovarian G

Application of Remote Sensing Data for Locust Research and Management-A Review.

Recently, locust outbreaks around the world have destroyed agricultural and natural vegetation and caused massive damage endangering food security. Unusual heavy rainfalls in habitats of the desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) and lack of monitoring due to political conflicts or inaccessibility of those habitats lead to massive desert locust outbreaks and swarms migrating over the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, India and Pakistan. At the same time, swarms of the Moroccan locust (Dociostaurus maroccanus) in some Central Asian countries and swarms of the Italian locust (Calliptamus italicus)

Health effects of natural dust: role of trace elements and compounds.

This article reviews the health effects of trace elements carried in natural dusts of geologic or geochemical origin. The sources of these dusts are diverse, including volcanoes, dust storms, long-range transport of desert dust, and displacement through natural processes such as landslides and earthquakes. The primary focus is dust exposures affecting communities rather than occupational groups (which have been comprehensively explored in other publications). The principal elements and compounds reviewed are trace metals (including As, Hg, Cd, and Fe), radioactive elements, fluoride, silicates
