Capacity and ability of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus probiotic strains isolated from some human and food sources were evaluated for modulating and regulating the immune system against hypersensitivity type 1 (dependent on IgE). In this study, given the probiotic properties of the strains and the use of mouse models, the strains were orally administered (1×109 cfu/ml) during 45 days with gavage needles. Levels of total IgE antibodies, cytokines TGF-β, INF-ɤ, and IL-4 were measured by ELISA and compared with control groups. In addition, the nasopharyngeal lavage

Food hypersensitivity (FHS) refers to food-related symptoms, with or without concurrent Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies related to food(s). It remains unclear how different FHS phenotypes affect health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We examined self-reported HRQoL (with the generic instrument EQ-5D (dimensions and a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), range 0-100) in association with phenotypes of FHS, and food-specific symptoms among adolescents (n = 2990) from a population-based birth cohort. Overall, 22% of the adolescents had FHS. Compared to adolescents without FHS, those with FHS reported m

BACKGROUND: Lipid transfer protein (LTP), the major allergen in Rosaceae in geographic areas where the prevalence of birch pollen allergy is low, is a widely cross-reacting pan-allergen, but the pattern of cross-reactivity to plant-derived foods botanically unrelated to Rosaceae shows much variability.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between peach LTP specific IgE levels and cross-reactivity to several non-Rosaceae, plant-derived foods.
METHODS: IgE specific for peach LTP was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in serum samples from 40 patients with Rosaceae allergy monosens

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Intravenous iron preparations rapidly correct iron deficiency anemia, with the notable drug class effect of rare, yet potentially life-threatening, administration-related hypersensitivity or anaphylactic reactions. The objective of this comparative study was to assess adverse events associated with four intravenous iron preparations and estimated medical costs, in the US Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database.
METHODS: Cases of hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis/anaphylactic shock associated with iron dextran, iron sucr

BACKGROUND: Two patients with tree nut allergy manifested by life-threatening systemic reactions reported the subsequent onset of systemic reactions after the consumption of coconut.
OBJECTIVE: Herein, the IgE-binding proteins from coconut are described, and in vitro cross-reactivity with other nuts is investigated.
METHODS: The IgE-binding profile of coconut endosperm tissue extract was analyzed by SDS-PAGE followed by immunoblotting. Immunoblot inhibition studies with walnut, almond, peanut, and coconut were performed.
RESULTS: Sera IgE from both patients recognized reduced coconut allerg

Food hypersensitivity is increasing, with clinical indications and allergens multiplying and evolving. We report our experience with clinical indications and distribution of allergens in children with food hypersensitivity. Data were established in a prospective study at medical centres in Nancy and Toulouse (France). We studied 378 children with food hypersensitivity indicated by food challenge, which account for 74.2% of food hypersensitivity. Clinical features were: atopic dermatitis (46.5%), urticaria (17.9%), oedema (14.2%), asthma (8.4%), anaphylaxis (5.2%), gastro-intestinal symptoms (2

Adverse reactions to food or dietary hypersensitivity are frequently seen problems in companion animal medicine and may be difficult to differentiate from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Dietary hypersensitivity can be divided into two subgroups: immunological and nonimmunological problems. Non-immunological problems can be subdivided into food intolerance, food poisoning, and dietary indiscretion. The immunological group can be subdivided into true food allergy (IgE mediated) and anaphylaxis (non-IgE mediated). This article gives an outline of what dietary hypersensitivity is, and more spec

Perceived and objective food hypersensitivity reactions are increasing steadily in the western countries. Therefore, otorhinolaryngologists are facing more frequently the challenge to evaluate individual food hypersensitivity reactions, to set these reactions into context with otorhinolaryngologic symptoms and to start systemic and appropriate diagnostic procedures and possibly therapy. Although a good portion of the perceived food hypersensitivity reactions can neither be objectivated nor causaly linked to the occurring symptoms, the recent literature provides documentation, suggestions and p

Disabled children suffer not only from their primary disease, but also from other complications, including food refusal. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the relationship between these conditions and food refusal in disabled children. The effectiveness of feeding therapy in treating food refusal was also examined. The study subjects were 67 disabled children (35 boys and 32 girls; mean age at initial examination: 6.5 years, SD: 6.0 years) who attended the Nippon Dental University Hospital between April 2004 and August 2008. Of them, the 13 subjects who were diagnosed as those who ref

UNLABELLED: Hypersensitivity reactions to natural rubber latex have increased recently, especially among people with high exposure to latex allergens. Hypersensitivity reactions to latex are related to many conditions like occupational asthma. Our study was performed to determine the prevalence of hypersensitivity to natural rubber latex and potential food cross reactions in operation room personnel in Shiraz hospitals. In this cross-sectional, descriptive study, 580 operation room personnel filled out our questionnaire which included data about their personal history, symptoms of latex hypers

OBJECTIVES: Knowledge about the prevalence of allergies to foods in childhood and adolescence is incomplete. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of allergies to milk, egg, cod, and wheat using reported data, clinical examinations, and double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges, and to describe the phenotypes of reported food hypersensitivity in a cohort of Swedish schoolchildren.
METHODS: In a population-based cohort of 12-year-old children, the parents of 2612 (96% of invited) completed a questionnaire. Specific IgE antibodies to foods were analyzed in a random s

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common functional gastrointestinal disorder. IBS is likely to be a multifactorial condition resulting from a number of different mechanisms such as disordered motility, visceral hypersensitivity, abnormal central processing, psychological factors, genetic factors, gut inflammation, and dietary factors. Many patients with IBS give a history of adverse food reactions, but the foods identified to be relevant have been highly variable. Food hypersensitivity can be mediated by immunoglobulin E-dependent and -independent mechanisms involving mast cells, eosin

Food allergens are capable of producing adverse reactions through multiple mechanisms of an allergic or non-allergic nature, and through different routes of exposure; generally by ingestion or contact, as in protein contact dermatitis or contact urticaria, including inhalation. Food allergy reactions, in turn, can be mediated by immediate hypersensitivity mechanisms, delayed hypersensitivity or mixed immediate-delayed mechanisms. The reference diagnostic method in food allergy is the double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge test (DBPCFC), but skin and serological tests are important in t

"Iodine allergy" does not exist. The concept of "iodine allergy" should be abandoned since it may result in inappropriate measures such as drug, food or environmental eviction. Immediate or non-immediate allergic hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast media is not infrequent. The corresponding allergens have not been identified. Iodine is not involved. Immediate or non-immediate allergic hypersensitivity to povidone iodine is rare. The corresponding allergen is povidone in case of immediate hypersensitivity while nonoxynol might be involved during non-immediate hypersensitivity. Seafood allerg

The paradigm for food allergy management has been strict avoidance of the food allergen. There is literature supporting a "high-threshold" phenotype, those who tolerate a small-to-modest amount of allergen but react to larger amounts. There is no consensus for best practice for these "high-threshold" individuals. We sought to understand management practices of "high-threshold" reactors using a survey that was distributed to a random sample of fellows and members of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. There were 89 respondents from the United States and Canada (11% response

Ingested food antigens rapidly cross the gastrointestinal barrier and reach pro-inflammatory cells in the skin. Food allergy provokes urticaria/angioedema by classical, Type I, IgE-mediated hypersensitivity. Food-induced atopic dermatitis is the result of non-classical, IgE-directed hypersensitivity involving resident mast cells, Langerhans cells, CD4+, TH2 lymphocytes and monocytes. A form of gluten sensitivity provokes a characteristic eczematous-like rash and enteropathy (Dermatitis herpetiformis).

Immunologically mediated hypersensitivity to foods is defined as food allergy, mainly due to immunglobulins of class E (IgE) triggering immediate reactions (type I hypersensitivity) with possible involvement of mucosa, skin, airways, intestinal tract, and the vascular system. Primary food allergy is based on (early) IgE sensitization against animal (e. g., cow's milk, hen's eggs) or plant proteins (e. g. peanut, hazelnut or wheat). In the case of secondary food allergies, IgE against pollen proteins (e. g., birch) reacts to structurally related food proteins (with cross-reactions to stone and
