Impact of participation in Home-Delivered Meals on nutrient intake, dietary patterns, and food insecurity of older persons in New York state.

The aim of this study was to determine if (1) participation in Home-Delivered Meals (HDM) results in improved dietary patterns and nutrient intake, lower food insecurity, and reduced loss of weight; (2) subgroups of older persons are more likely to benefit; and (3) nutritional indicators of impact other than nutrient intake may be useful. The design used was quasi-experimental, with longitudinal assessment of individuals on HDM at baseline (before receipt of services), 6, and 12 months, and comparison to non-randomized group receiving other services. Outcomes included measured weight and heigh

Pediatric Emergency Department-based Food Insecurity Screening During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The emergency department (ED) is a safety net, caring for families who lack adequate access to food and other basic needs. The COVID-19 pandemic caused a dramatic rise in food insecurity (FI) nationally; however, little is known about the prevalence of FI among families seen in pediatric EDs (PED). In this study we aimed to determine the prevalence of FI, as well as awareness and utilization of supplemental food services, among families seen in an urban PED during the COVID-19 pandemic using an electronic screening survey. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of families s

The use of home-based therapy with ready-to-use therapeutic food to treat malnutrition in a rural area during a food crisis.

When the international community declared a famine in Malawi in January of 2006, emergency food aid reached only populations with pre-existing health care services. To treat the widespread childhood malnutrition in Machinga district, a rural area lacking health care facilities, in February 2006 five outpatient therapeutic programs were implemented that utilized home-based therapy and ready-to-use therapeutic food. Children with severe malnutrition, defined as the presence of edema and/or a weight-for-height less than 70% of the reference standard, were enrolled in the program. Two senior clini

Integrating community health workers into a community hearing health collaborative to understand the social determinants of health in children with hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Children with hearing loss (HL) require coordination of care to navigate medical and social services. Strong evidence supports the role of community health workers (CHWs) to identify and address social barriers. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of integrating CHWs into the medical teams of children with HL and identify the social needs associated with their caregivers at a large urban hospital center. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted for 30 children with HL whose caregivers enrolled in a CHW program between August 1, 2017 and Decembe

Microbiological safety of sandwiches from hospitals and other health care establishments in the United Kingdom with a focus on Listeria monocytogenes and other Listeria species.

In the United Kingdom between 1999 and 2004, there were four outbreaks of Listeria monocytogenes infection associated with sandwiches purchased from or provided in hospitals. Elderly or immunocompromised individuals and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to infection; therefore, the focus of this study was on sandwiches served in health care establishments. Of 3,249 sandwich samples collected between April 2005 and March 2006, 3.3% were of unsatisfactory microbiological quality because of high levels of Enterobacteriaceae (2.0%; > or = 10(4) CFU/g for sandwiches not containing salad),

ASHP national survey of pharmacy practice in acute care settings--1996.

The results of the 1996 ASHP national survey of pharmaceutical services in nonfederal community hospitals are presented and compared with the findings of the 1994 ASHP survey. A questionnaire was mailed to pharmacy directors at hospitals randomly sampled from those registered by the American Hospital Association. A total of 713 usable surveys were returned, for a net response rate of 37.1%. Inpatient pharmaceutical services were provided an average of 17.4 hours per weekday and ambulatory care pharmaceutical services 13.3 hours per weekday. Pharmacy directors were more likely to have duties be

Patient Nutritional Intake and Experiences With Two Models of Texture Modified Food Preparation in Hospital: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Texture modified foods are recommended for people with dysphagia but the visual appeal and nutritional quality of the foods may be reduced through modification. Moulding pureed foods back into their original shape rather than serving as a scoop in a ramekin may improve the visual appeal of texture modified foods, and their intake. The current study describes the cost, nutritional composition, intakes and satisfaction of two methods for preparing and serving texture modified meals in hospital, one cooked-fresh and scooped in ramekins and one commercially prepared and moulded. Oral feedings in the cancer patient.

The importance of maintaining the cancer patient's nutritional status is now recognized as a major part of the medical care. It is necessary for the oncology team to be aware of the psychological and physiological factors that interfere with food acceptance so that the correct food can be offered at the right time in the most palatable form. The oral route is the preferred method of feeding, and nutritional supplements, chosen according to the individual patient's needs, are of great value in assuring an adequate oral intake. Diagnostic tests and therapy are frequent causes of disruption of th

The case for nutritional support. Eliminating hospital-acquired malnutrition improves outcomes and reduces costs.

Taking steps to eliminate hospital-acquired malnutrition in patients with disease or trauma significantly improves treatment outcomes. Patients' ability to recover from trauma or illness and respond to therapy depends on how well they synthesize proteins necessary to regain homeostasis. It is possible for patients to die from complications of progressive hospital-acquired malnutrition. Hospital executives and clinical personnel must understand that timely intervention with nonvolitional feeding in appropriately selected patients will decrease morbidity and length of stay. Hospitals that ignore

Good allergy practice--standards of care for providers and purchasers of allergy services within the National Health Service. Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Pathologists.

Allergic diseases affect at least 15% of the population and are the cause of much ill-health. 'Clinical immunology and allergy', the term used by the Department of Health in England and Wales for this area of specialization, is recognized as a separate specialty of medicine under the National Health Service. Many organ-based hospital consultants (e.g. chest physicians) have allergy as a special interest or subspecialty. Allergists deal largely with 'itch, sneeze, cough and wheeze' and so are experts in: summer hay fever (seasonal, allergic, conjunctivorhinitis); perennial rhinitis (symptoms of

Predicting and comparing patient satisfaction in four different modes of health care across a nation.

This study aims to inform strategic policy makers and managers about the value of general population surveys by determining and comparing dimensions of satisfaction in four different health services in Scotland: general practice, domiciliary care, outpatients and inpatients (including day cases). The research design involved secondary data analysis of a national telephone survey conducted to inform the development of a national health plan. The database was created using a stratified quota sample of 3052 people of 16 years and above resident in Scotland in 2000. The main outcome measures inves

Investigation of a COVID-19 outbreak at a regional prison, Northern Uganda, September 2020.

Despite implementing measures to prevent introduction of COVID-19 in prisons, a COVID-19 outbreak occurred at Moroto Prison, northern Uganda in September 2020. We investigated factors associated with the introduction and spread of COVID-19 in the prison. A case was PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in a prisoner/staff at Moroto Prison during August-September 2020. We reviewed prison medical records to identify case-patients and interviewed prison and hospital staff to understand possible infection mechanisms for the index case-patient and opportunities for spread. In a retrospective cohort st

Effects of food insecurity risk on infant feeding confidence and practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and its waves.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath changed numerous social and economic environments. Food insecurity rates rose with potential negative ramifications for infant feeding methods. The relationship between food insecurity and infant feeding practices since the onset of the pandemic is not yet fully understood. We examined these relationships in a cohort of infants born during the onset and aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of infants enrolled from birth into the COVID-19 Mother-Baby Outcomes (COMBO) study and bo

Googling Allergy in Ireland: Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Internet search engines are increasingly being utilized as the first port of call for medical information by the public. The prevalence of allergies in developed countries has risen steadily over time. There exists significant variability in the quality of health-related information available on the web. Inaccurately diagnosed and mismanaged allergic disease has major downstream effects on patients, general practitioners, and regional allergy services. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to verify whether Ireland has a relatively high rate of web-based allergy-related searches, to establi

Development and implementation of a human accuracy program in patient foodservice.

For many years, industry has utilized the concept of human error rates to monitor and minimize human errors in the production process. A consistent quality-controlled product increases consumer satisfaction and repeat purchase of product. Administrative dietitians have applied the concepts of using human error rates (the number of errors divided by the number of opportunities for error) at four hospitals, with a total bed capacity of 788, within a tertiary-care medical center. Human error rate was used to monitor and evaluate trayline employee performance and to evaluate layout and tasks of tr
