Update on hand-foot-and-mouth disease.

Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a viral exanthem caused, primarily by Coxsackie A16 and enterovirus 71 with typical clinical features of fever, painful papules and blisters over the extremities and genitalia and an enanthem involving ulceration of the mouth, palate, and pharynx. Other enteroviruses have recently been noted to cause severe neurologic illness and paralysis (enterovirus 68) with variable cutaneous features. A recent outbreak of Coxsackie A6 infection has been seen worldwide with cases reported in the United States, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Europe. These cases have caused extensi

[Foot-and-mouth disease of cattle is not a zoonosis].

In 1997 there was an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) among cattle in Turkey. People visiting that country were warned against importing animal products into the Netherlands. This had nothing to do with hazards to human health, as FMD virus is not a zoonotic virus, but with the risk of spread of the disease to livestock in the Netherlands, notably to cattle and pigs. A disease with similar clinical symptoms in pigs is swine vesicular disease (SVD), which is not a zoonosis either. FMD virus is an aphtovirus, SVD virus is an enterovirus. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease in humans is caused by

[Mycetoma of the foot; a disease from the tropics].

Two patients, a Surinamese man aged 50 and a Surinamese woman aged 56 exhibited a mycetoma of the foot, 30 and 28 years, respectively, after a local injury. Pathological examination revealed an aspecific chronic granulomatous inflammation. As causative agents a Fusarium species and a Cladosporium normodendrum, respectively, were cultured. The treatment consisted of curettage of fistulous ducts and administration of itraconazole.

[An epidemic of hand, foot and mouth disease].

Five patients with hand-, foot- and mouth disease, caused by infection with Coxsackievirus type A16, are described in an epidemic outbreak of this disease. Hand-, foot- and mouth disease, is characterized by a most distinctive enanthem-exanthemcomplex. In 65% of the cases a vesiculopapular exanthem is noted. Most cases are described in epidemic outbreaks. Although the vast majority of occurrences of the disease have been due to Coxsackie A16 viral infections, occasionally Coxsackie A5, A10 and enterovirus 71, seldom Coxsackievirus B1 or B3, have been etiologically incriminated. High Prevalence of Foot Insufficiency Fractures in Patients With Inflammatory Rheumatic Musculoskeletal Diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of foot insufficiency fractures (IF) in patients with rheumatic musculoskeletal disease (RMD) with foot pain. METHODS: In a retrospective design, 1752 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of consecutive patients presenting with foot pain in 2 time periods between 2016 and 2018 were evaluated. The group with IF was matched with controls with foot pain without IF. Bone mineral density (BMD) was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Multivariate analyses were performed. RESULTS: A total of 1145 MRI scans of patients (median age 59 yrs, 82.9% female)

Extending the foot-and-mouth disease module to the control of other diseases.

During the recent devastating epidemics of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), bluetongue (BT), the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and New Castle disease, more than 115 million animals were culled. The mass slaughter of animals raised serious ethical questions. These epidemics showed that the use of emergency vaccination is an essential element in disease control. During the last decade the FMD antigen banks have proved to be effective and this module should be extended. An international vaccine stock should be considered for classical swine fever and HPAI. Agreements with vaccine producer

Foot and mouth disease and cryptosporidiosis: possible interaction between two emerging infectious diseases.

During 2001, a large outbreak of foot and mouth disease occurred in the United Kingdom, during which approximately 2,030 confirmed cases of the disease were reported, >6 million animals were slaughtered, and strict restrictions on access to the countryside were imposed. We report a dramatic decline in the reported incidence of human cryptosporidiosis in northwest England during weeks 13-38 in 2001, compared with the previous 11 years. This decline coincided with the period of foot and mouth restrictions. No similar reduction occurred in the other 26 weeks of the year. We also noted a substanti

Clinching the cause: A review of foot drop secondary to lumbar degenerative diseases.

Foot drop is defined as weakness on dorsiflexion of the foot. The top two most common etiologies for foot drop include lumbar degenerative disease and common peroneal nerve injury. This review provides "updates" on understanding the lumbar etiologies of foot drop. Since the publication of "Preoperative motor strength and time to surgery are the most important predictors of improvement in foot drop due to degenerative lumbar disease" in the Journal of Neurological Sciences, three cohort studies have been published on spinal causes of foot drop. Classification, clinical features, diagnosis, and

Emerging and reemerging enterovirus diseases: From poliomyelitis to hand, foot and mouth disease.

Several picornaviruses (Picornaviridae) are currently attracting interest without the need of being "emergent". The Parechovirus genus, validated 40 years after the discovery of the first two members ("echoviruses 22 and 23") includes neurotropic viruses whose molecular diagnosis demonstrated the involvement in infant meningitis and newborn sepsis, in particular type 3. Improvements in multiplex molecular diagnosis of respiratory infections - thanks to the Influenza AH1N1pdm2009 pandemy - showed that rhinoviruses may be involved in severe forms. The risk of the re-emergence of poliomyelitis in

Arthritis and related diseases of the foot and ankle: rehabilitation and biomechanical considerations.

Arthritis and other rheumatic conditions are among the most common disabilities in the United States. Although arthritic conditions affect the knee and hip joints more frequently than the joints of the foot, disorders of the foot are particularly disabling. This article outlines the types of arthritis conditions affecting the foot and discusses strategies for management and rehabilitation.

Drop foot due to lumbar degenerative disease: Painless drop foot is difficult to recover.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the improvement of drop foot following lumbar decompression surgery and determine the prognostic factors that might influence the recovery of drop foot. SUMMARY AND BACKGROUND DATE: Drop foot is a common but serious problem that can lead to deteriorate patient's daily activities. There are numerous studied regarding the prognostic factors for the recovery of drop foot. However a few reports have been described the pathophysiological etiology of not only drop foot but also Trendelenburg's sign due to the L5 nerve root palsy. Therefore, there is a possibility drop foot ca

Quality of Foot Care Among Patients With Diabetes: A Study Using a Polish Version of the Diabetes Foot Disease and Foot Care Questionnaire.

Diabetic foot syndrome is a common, yet serious complication of diabetes, affecting 4% to 10% of patients with diabetes. Polish Diabetes Association guidelines emphasize the need for prevention among patients with diabetes; a key role is played by consistent education on foot care and ulceration prevention. The Diabetes Foot Disease and Foot Care Questionnaire (DFDFC-Q) is the only research instrument available for comprehensive assessment of foot self-care. The study purposes were to explore the quality of foot care among patients with diabetes and to evaluate the psychometric properties of t
