Anesthesia in the emergency setting: Part I. Hand and foot injuries.

Topical application and local infiltration of anesthetic agents are useful for localized areas, while a circular field block provides superficial anesthesia within the encircled area. Regional anesthesia is accomplished by injecting the anesthetic agent near a nerve or nerve group. Useful anesthetic techniques for repair of hand injuries include wrist blocks, intermetacarpal blocks and local infiltration anesthesia. Median nerve block, ulnar nerve block, radial nerve block or a combination of these blocks provides satisfactory anesthesia without inducing muscle paralysis in the anesthetized re

The biomechanics of running. Implications for the prevention of foot injuries.

Understanding the biomechanics of running has brought implications for the prevention of foot injuries. These biomechanical considerations, both functional and non-functional, must be evaluated by the sports medicine practitioner. Although functional biomechanical findings are more accurate predictors of injury and diagnostic tools than static findings, a correlation between the two is essential. Other important variables, e.g. training methods, athletic shoes, psychology, general health, external environment (surfaces, weather) and overuse, must be correlated with the biomechanical findings.

The Weekend Warrior: Common Foot and Ankle Injuries in Recreational Athletes.

Weekend warriors are recreational athletes who compress their physical activity into 1-2 weekly exercise sessions. The characteristic combination of general deconditioning and excessive activity can predispose these individuals to a multitude of foot and ankle injuries. The purpose of this review is to highlight the etiology and management of common foot and ankle injuries in recreational athletes.

Management of sports injuries of the foot and ankle: An update.

Injuries to the foot in athletes are often subtle and can lead to a substantial loss of function if not diagnosed and treated appropriately. For these injuries in general, even after a diagnosis is made, treatment options are controversial and become even more so in high level athletes where limiting the time away from training and competition is a significant consideration. In this review, we cover some of the common and important sporting injuries affecting the foot including updates on their management and outcomes. Current Swiss Techniques in Management of Lisfranc Injuries of the Foot.

The outcome after Lisfranc injuries correlates with anatomic and stable reduction. The best surgical treatment, particularly for the ligamentous Lisfranc injuries, remains controversial. Recent publications suggest that the ligamentous injuries may benefit from primary partial Lisfranc arthrodesis. Most surgeons agree that an appropriate reduction is better and easier achieved by open reduction and stable temporary screw or dorsal plate fixation or by open primary partial arthrodesis than by closed reduction or Kirschner wire fixation. Despite correct surgical technique and postoperative manag

Is Pes Cavus Alignment Associated With Lisfranc Injuries of the Foot?

BACKGROUND: Lisfranc (tarsometatarsal joint) injuries are relatively rare, accounting for less than 1% of all fractures, and as many as 20% of subtle Lisfranc injuries are missed at the initial patient presentation. An undiagnosed Lisfranc injury can have devastating consequences to the patient. Therefore, any factor that can raise a clinician's index of suspicion to make this diagnosis is potentially important. The cavus foot has been associated with various maladies of the lower extremity, but to our knowledge, it has not been reported to be associated with Lisfranc injury. QUESTIONS/PURPOS

[Spiral computed tomography in the diagnosis of ankle and foot injuries].

The data on 187 patients with traumatic lesions of the ankle joint and foot were used to analyze the capacities of computed tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of this pathology. The efficiency of CT versus X-ray study was evaluated. Specific guidelines are given to make spital CT. CT is shown to be of the most informative value in the diagnosis of lesions of the tibial plateau, undisplaced fractures of the internal malleolus, small marginal comminuted fractures, and lesions of the distal tibiofibular syndesmosis. There is evidence for that CT plays a dominant role in the diagnosis of lesions of

Nerve injuries to the foot and ankle in the industrial setting.

Nerve injuries of the foot and ankle are among the most difficult to diagnose and treat. With the added influences of potential secondary gain and poor motivation of the work injured patient, these injuries can be taxing and frustrating to manage in the acute or chronic setting. This article reviews the neuroanatomy, mechanisms of injury, diagnosis and management of these injuries with specific reference to the patient injured in the industrial setting.

Injuries of the foot related to the use of lawn mowers.

We managed thirty-three patients who had open injuries of the foot related to the use of a lawn mower from 1985 through 1992. Twenty-eight of the patients were male and five were female. They ranged in age from four to seventy-three years old. The injuries were associated with the use of push lawn mowers (twenty-two patients), riding lawn mowers (nine patients), and self-propelled lawn mowers (two patients). The injuries included forty open fractures, twenty amputations, eighteen lacerations of the skin and nail beds, nine lacerations of tendons, two closed fractures, segmental loss of bone in

Lower leg and foot injuries in tennis and other racquet sports.

Injuries to the lower extremity are common in racquet sports. These can be either acute or chronic. Although acute injuries usually respond to treatment, chronic injuries are often less amenable to treatment. The occurrence of both kinds of injuries, however, can often be prevented by proper training techniques including stretching and strengthening exercises. These exercises are also important components of a proper rehabilitation program.

Common injuries of the foot. Often more than 'just a sprain'.

While most foot injuries heal without treatment, failure to recognize and treat some can have disastrous consequences. The exact mechanism of injury must be determined for accurate diagnosis. Many injuries, such as plantar fasciitis, "pump bump," sesamoiditis, and stress fractures, are the result of cumulative, repetitive stress rather than of an acute event. Others, such as injuries to tendons, may be chronic or acute. The foot is susceptible to numerous types of acute trauma, including sprains, fractures, dislocations, crushing, freezing, thermal injury, puncture wounds, and penetration by f

[Fresh ligament injuries at upper ankle joint and foot (author's transl)].

Crush injuries and abnormal pronation and supination are the most common reasons for typical ligament tears in this region. Most of them should be treated conservatively by plaster of Paris and early weight-bearing after exact clinical and X-ray diagnosis. At upper ankle joint, suture of ruptured fibular collateral ligaments should be favoured. For dislocations and fracture dislocations of the Lisfranc type operative reposition and K-wiring is recommended. Our treatment results with fibular collateral ruptures and fracture dislocations of the Lisfranc type are presented.

A degloving foot injury in a traffic accident.

An unusual human remain found on a road became one key to reconstruct the traffic accident. A woman was found dead on a snow-covered road. Her left foot showed a large deficit of skin and underlying fat tissue. The detached skin and tissue were found into her left sock and shoe lying at a distance of 23 m from the body. There were multiple fractures on her back and occipital cranial bone. Severe injuries revealed in heart, liver, and brain. The neck remained intact. These findings suggested that her back has been strongly hit by the object with the flat surface, for example, the front side of

[Overuse injury syndromes of the calf and foot] ].

The lower leg, foot and ankle form a functional unit of the locomotor system with an important static and dynamic function. Injury or loss of function of any muscle group of the lower leg and the foot influences normal gait or impedes standing. Increased or frequent loads on the muscle group may lead to pain syndromes known as overuse syndromes or overuse injuries. Athletes and certain professions involving standing or walking for a long time are especially susceptible to increased muscle strains. This article describes and clarifies the causes and the development of the pain syndromes in the

Paddy Farmers' Perspectives on Foot Care, their Modalities for Prevention of Foot Injuries- A Community-based Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational disorders are the causes of lost workdays, inefficient performance by workers, and medical costs. This study was done to explore the understanding and perspectives of paddy farmers on foot care and their preventive strategies. METHODS: In-depth interviews (IDI) using a semi-structured IDI guide were conducted among the experienced (40 years and above) paddy farmers over two months. A total of 15 farmers were interviewed, and then a qualitative content analysis was done using ATLAS.ti. An inductive approach was taken. RESULTS: In-depth interviews showed three themes
