Diabetic foot ulcer infection is a crucial complication associated with lower-limb amputation and postoperative mortality in individuals with diabetes mellitus. Deciding if a diabetic foot ulcer is infected in a community setting is challenging without validated point-of-care tests. Early detection of infected diabetic foot ulcers can reduce the frequency of hospitalizations, the occurrence of disability, and chances of mortality. Inflammatory biomarkers are predictors of infected diabetic foot ulcers and lower-limb amputation. Procalcitonin, CRP, pentraxin-3, interleukin-6, and calprotectin m

Chronic wounds are a substantial clinical problem in diabetes and nearly 6% of diabetics suffer from foot disease including ulceration, infection, and tissue necrosis. Wound healing in diabetes is impaired and delayed and is augmented by diabetic complications. Wound healing involves complex cellular, molecular, and biochemical processes and animal models are the most suitable prototype to investigate and understand the underlying pathological changes in the process of wound healing. Animal models are also useful in evaluating the safety and efficacy of newer therapeutic agents and improving t

The development of foot ulcers is a common consequence of severe diabetes. Due to vascular disorders and impeded healing caused by the disease, most foot ulcers have been reported to be affected by body weight and progress with time. Also, abnormal distribution of plantar pressures has been observed to cause the formation of additional ulcers, which may collectively lead to traumatic amputations. While a study of such pathophysiology is not possible through experiments, a few computational modelling works have investigated diabetic foot ulcers. To date, ulcers with a few sizes and locations ha

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes that impact on the patient, their social environment, overall health, and on nursing practice. Nursing scholars have integrated theories on practice to overcome these problems, but a lack of agreement in the available literature acts as a barrier to implementing these in practice. For that reason, using a nursing metaparadigm as a theoretical framework would assist nurses in managing care purposefully and proactively, thus possibly improving outcomes. There has been little discussion about the nursing metaparadigm in relation t

Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is the most costly and devastating complication of diabetes mellitus, which affect 15% of diabetic patients during their lifetime. Based on National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence strategies, early effective management of DFU can reduce the severity of complications such as preventable amputations and possible mortality, and also can improve overall quality of life. The management of DFU should be optimized by using a multidisciplinary team, due to a holistic approach to wound management is required. Based on studies, blood sugar control, wound debrideme

Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is an important risk factor for surgical site infections. The goal of this study was to investigate the concordance between nasal and diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) SA carriage. Seventy-nine subjects with DFUs were assessed for nasal and DFU colonization with SA, including methicillin-resistant SA (MRSA). Twenty-five (31.6%) subjects had nares colonization with SA; 29 (36.7%) had DFU colonization with SA. Seven (8.8%) subjects had nares colonization with MRSA, and 7 (8.8%) had DFU colonization with MRSA. Ulcer duration was associated with MRSA presence (

Diabetic complications such as poor circulation and nerve damage can result in loss of sensation and slower wound healing in the lower extremities. The possibility of malignancy arising in association with chronic osteomyelitis in the diabetic foot should also be considered.

Marjolin's ulcers are malignancies that arise from previously traumatized, chronically inflamed, or scarred skin. We report a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in a foot wound 42 years after the time of injury. The historical background, epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of Marjolin's ulcer are reviewed. Diagnosis is best accomplished by punch biopsy or excision of suggestive lesions. Wide local excision is required and amputation may be necessary to achieve an adequate margin. Regional lymph node dissection should be done if regional nodes are palpable.

BACKGROUND: The quality of life (QoL) of diabetic foot ulcer patients is worse than that of diabetic patients. The Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale-Short Form (DFS-SF) is a readily available instrument used to evaluate the quality of life of diabetic foot ulcer individuals. The aim of this study was to translate the DFS-SF into Chinese, followed by an evaluation of its validity and reliability.
METHODS: This study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, we followed the Brislin's Translation and Back-translation model to translate the DFS-SF into Mandarin Chinese. In the second phase, we exa

AIMS: A diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a severe and often recurrent complication of diabetes. Adherence to favorable foot care habits is essential to avoid recurrence. This study aimed to investigate differences in foot care habits among people with and without previous DFUs, and to assess the impact on quality of life (QoL).
METHODS: Data were extracted from a large survey distributed to everyone with diabetes in the Northern Danish Region (n = 29,155). The survey obtained data on demographics, and also included the Nottingham Assessment of Functional Footcare (NAFF), Short Form 36 (SF-36), an

OBJECTIVE: To determine (1) if offloading with a felt foot plate heals a diabetic foot ulcer, (2) the rate of healing with the felt foot plate, and (3) the impact on rate of healing from the confounding factors of patient weight and growth factors on healing times.
METHODS: The researchers conducted a retrospective chart cohort review over 3 years.
RESULTS: Using a multivariable linear and logistic regression model, the data showed a statistically significant reduction in the diabetic foot ulcer area over time. Confounding factors of patient weight and growth factors did not impact healing t

BACKGROUND: Previous reliability studies on peak plantar pressure measurements in patients with previous diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) did not stratify their analyses according to whether the foot had a previous ulcer.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does test-retest reliability of peak foot pressure measurements from the various foot regions differ between the ulcerated and non-ulcerated feet?
METHODS: Data from 23 participants with peripheral neuropathy and healed plantar DFU were analysed in this test-retest reliability comparison study. Plantar pressure was evaluated on two sessions using Pedar®-X i
