The effect of range and ammunition type on fracture patterns in porcine postcranial flat bones.

Pig half-carcasses were shot in scapulae, ribs and mandibles with either 0.243 hunting rifle using high velocity expanding ammunition (N = 30) or AK47 using full metal jacketed (FMJ) ammunition (N = 12) from a range of either 5 or 20 m. Fracture patterns related to distance of fire and ammunition type were compared on de-fleshed, macerated, and reconstructed bones. For expanding ammunition, location of fracture on ribs affected the resulting pattern. Scapulae shot from 5 m presented a comminuted pattern different from those shot from 20 m. Mandibles shot from 20 m showed a characteristic radia

Forensic value of gunpowder tattooing in identification of multiple entrance wounds from one bullet.

Multiple entrance gunshot wounds can give useful information in forensic evaluation of deaths from homicide and suicide. Although the presence of multiple entrance gunshot wounds does not absolutely exclude the possibility of suicide, they are important to the forensic investigators and pathologists in cases of assault, attempted homicide and suicide as they provide important clues for determination of number of shots fired and direction of firing. We present a case of 16 years of young woman who was shot to death by her husband. External examination revealed an entrance wound with semi-lunar

Impact Location Dependence of Behind Armor Blunt Trauma Injury Assessed Using a Human Body Finite Element Model.

Behind armor blunt trauma (BABT), resulting from dynamic deformation of protective ballistic armor into the thorax, is currently assessed assuming a constant threshold of maximum backface deformation (BFDs) (44 mm). Although assessed for multiple impacts on the same armor, testing is focused on armor performance (shot-to-edge and shot-to-shot) without consideration of the underlying location on the thorax. Previous studies identified the importance of impacts on organs of animal surrogates wearing soft armor. However, the effect of impact location was not quantified outside the threshold of 44

Localization of a Bullet in a Firearm Injury Victim Using X-ray Imaging During Autopsy: A Case Report.

Firearm injuries can result in varying degrees of trauma, depending on factors such as the type of firearm, range, and wound location. This case report presents the role of X-ray imaging in detecting a projectile causing fatal penetrating abdominal trauma in a 45-year-old male. The patient was found with a gunshot wound in his abdomen, and despite medical interventions, he succumbed to his injuries. X-ray imaging revealed a hyper-dense area resembling a bullet lodged in the abdominal cavity. Autopsy confirmed a close-range gunshot with significant internal damage to the peritoneum, mesentery,

Simulating backspatter of blood from cranial gunshot wounds using pig models.

Few studies have examined the biomechanical basis for backspatter from cranial gunshot wounds. Backspatter is material which travels against the direction of fire following ejection from a gunshot entrance wound. Our paper focuses on the use of animals for reconstructing this phenomenon. Five live pigs and several slaughtered pigs were shot using either 9 × 19 mm, 115 grain, full metal jacketed ammunition or .22 long rifle, 40 grain, lead, round-nose ammunition. A high-speed camera was used to record the entrance wound formation and backspatter. A small amount of backspattered material was pro

Post-mortem analysis of gunshot wounds to the head and thorax in dogs by computed tomography, radiography and forensic necropsy.

In view of the scarcity of literature data on the use of radiological imaging techniques in forensic veterinary medicine, while at the same time the number of reported crimes against animals involving the use of firearms is rising, this paper attempts to assess the usefulness of radiography and computed tomography (CT) in the post-mortem diagnosis of gunshot wounds (GSW) in comparison to classic necropsy. The design of the experiment was as follows: preparation of the research material (13 dog carcasses), shooting of the material from different distances (1.5 and 12 m, plus one contact shot to

The role of PMCT in firearm injuries. Case study.

BACKGROUND: The use of radiological approaches in forensic investigations is rapidly emerging as an alternative to traditional autopsies. Here, we present the experience of the Sicilian and Calabrian forensic medical departments over the past five years, highlighting the application of PMCT to support autopsies in cases involving gunshot wound victims. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2020 to March 2024, thirty cadavers who died from gunshot wounds underwent total body PMCT examinations followed by autopsies. The examinations included multi-planar and 3D reconstructions. Data collected for

The mechanism of the keyhole lesion reassessed: An experimental approach.

The initial description of the keyhole defect was detailed as a peculiar gunshot entrance wound in the cranial vault due to firearm discharge in a tangential path. This injury may be described in two parts: a rounded section with inner table beveling and a triangular section with outer table beveling. We report a case of a gunshot skull wound "keyhole" shaped, appeared to have been made perpendicularly to the bone. Performing an experimental study on cranial bones with shots made perpendicularly to the skull approved this hypothesis, and bone injuries were then architecturally characterised us

[Morphology and phenomenology of crossbow injuries with a review of the literature].

This paper presents two cases of survived and fatal injuries caused by broad-head arrows. Case no. 1 is characterised by repeated assaults resulting in severe injuries to the legs of the victim. The lesions showed characteristic patterns due to the arrow-heads with four cross-shaped blades. Case no. 2 represented a suicide with the crossbow arrow entering the upper mouth region at close range, penetrating the base of the skull, the pons and the inter-hemispheric space, with the tip of the arrow being lodged in the skullcap. Morphology of the wounds, ballistic features and technical characteris

Blast and fragmentation injuries associated with cluster munitions in modern warfare: a narrative review.

Cluster munitions remain a significant source of blast and fragmentation injuries in modern armed conflicts owing to their wide-area effects, high fragment density, and the persistence of unexploded submunitions. These weapons generate complex injury patterns involving blast overpressure, high-velocity fragment penetration, thermal effects, and multi-system trauma, posing substantial clinical, forensic, and humanitarian challenges. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on injury mechanisms associated with cluster munitions, with particular emphasis on fragment-induced penetrating

Two cases of exenteration of the brain from Brenneke shotgun slugs.

A case of extended suicide resulted in two fatalities due to craniocerebral gunshots from a 12-gauge shotgun firing Brenneke shotgun slugs. In each case, the gunshot shattered the skull and the brain and in one case, large parts of the brain including a complete hemisphere were ejected similar to a "Krönlein shot". The location of the trajectory close to the base of the skull, the muzzle gases and the ballistic characteristics of the missile contributed to this rare form of head injury. The high mass and the large diameter of the lead missile do not necessitate a high muzzle velocity to crush

Entrance and exit wounds of high velocity bullet: An autopsy analysis in the event of dispersing the mass rally in Bangkok Thailand, May 2010.

Fatal mass casualties by high velocity bullets (HVBs) are rare events in peaceful countries. This study presents 27 forensic autopsy cases with 32 shots fired by 5.56×45mm. HVB (M-16 rifle bullets) during the dispersing the mass rally in Bangkok Thailand, May 2010. It was found that twenty-three (71.88%) typical entrance HVB wounds had round sizes less than the bullet diameters. Most entrance wounds had microtears but no collar abrasion since a HVB has a small streamlined spitzer tip and full metal jacket. For exit wounds, there were various sizes and shapes depending on which section of wound

Crossbow injuries: A case report with experimental reconstruction study and a systematic review of literature.

In modern times crossbow - a ranged weapon diffused during Middle Ages - is increasing its popularity in recreational hunting and sports; crossbow bolts have a great penetration capacity, despite their low initial velocity. Great concerns emerge when considering that notwithstanding crossbow is a potentially lethal distance weapon, it is easy to obtain without having to undertake any tests on the buyer's mental or physical health. Although rare, crossbow injuries can be challenging for the forensic pathologist due to great similarities with other wounds pattern (gunshots wounds or injury due t

Quantitative wound ballistic analysis of gelatin head phantoms by computed tomography using the total crack length method.

Gelatin-based phantoms are appropriate simulants of human soft tissue and can be used for ballistic experiments. Computed tomography (CT) is useful for quantitative wound ballistics analysis and has been applied to gelatin blocks. This study aimed to create total crack length (TCL) profiles along the penetration depth in head phantoms after ballistic experiments with different types of ammunition at varying distances using CT data. Sixteen commercially available gelatin-based head phantoms were subjected to ballistic testing with six different types of ammunition. Nine were contact shots, whil

The effect of human decomposition on bullet examination.

Most firearm related homicides involve the deceased being forensically examined within a day or two, however, there are times when bodies have been examined and the fired components removed several days or weeks after death, when the body is in an active or advanced state of decomposition. In these cases, ballistic investigation has been found to be complicated due to the damage to the bullets, however the extent of this is not yet known. To date, there have been no studies investigating the effect of human decomposition and the subsequent analysis of bullets lodged in the body in an Australia

Preliminary study into the skeletal injuries sustained to the spine from posterior non-perforating ballistic impacts into body armour.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this paper was to examine any injuries from posterior behind armour blunt trauma ballistic impacts directly over the spine onto typical hard body armours. Due to the spine being close to the surface of the skin and a lack of any previous specific research into this topic, this study was designed to gain preliminary insight into the mechanisms involved and injuries caused. Pigs were chosen as the closest representative of human spine, tissue and skin, although their spines are deeper under the surface than humans. Baseline spine and ribs shots were conducted to ensure t

[Alleged assault in a forest: An unusual case of self-inflicted blunt injury].

The medico-legal assessment of potentially self-inflicted injuries is an important field of clinical forensic medicine. Compared with sharp force injuries, it is much more difficult to distinguish blunt injuries caused by another party from self-inflicted lesions. We present a case of a young female doctor, who was allegedly attacked by an unknown stranger during her evening walk in the woods. She claimed to have been hit repeatedly on the head and arms with a stone. During the forensic investigation, blunt injuries could be confirmed on her head and forearms. Based on the arrangement and inte

Arc-like curvilinear bullet pathways along inner surface of skull - two cases.

To provide example cases within the peer-reviewed literature of a phenomenon related to certain gunshot wounds of the head where the bullet pathway courses along the inner table of the skull. Presentation of two cases discovered at medicolegal autopsy. The two cases provide radiologic and autopsy demonstration of bullet pathways within the head where the projectiles track along the inner aspect of the cranium, in a circumferential manner, such that the bullets are recovered in a location on the opposite side of the brain/head, with no projectile pathway within the intervening deep structures o

[A change in the direction of the wound channel in the case of the combined injury inflicted by a shot from the 9.0 mm Makarov pistol].

The authors present an example from the expert practice demonstrating the influence of such factors as the properties of the ammunition fired from a weapon (including its weight, size, shape, and speed) as well as the anatomical features of the body tissues being affected on the mechanism of formation of a gunshot wound in the human body. The investigation of the suicide of subject P. has demonstrated the penetrating bullet wound of the neck and the head. Performance of primary repair on colon injuries sustained from low-versus high-energy projectiles.

Among various reasons, colon injuries may be caused by low- or high-energy firearm bullets, with the latter producing a temporary cavitation phenomenon. The available treatment options include primary repair and two-stage management, but recent studies have shown that primary repair can be widely used with a high success rate. This paper investigates the differences in performance of primary repair on these two types of colon injuries. Two groups of patients who sustained colon injuries due to single gunshot wounds, were retrospectively categorized based on the type of bullet. Primary colon re
