Egocenter location in children with strabismus: in the median plane and unchanged by surgery.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that there are spatial localization shifts after horizontal strabismus surgery when a patient performs an open-loop pointing task. After monocular enucleation, an adult will also show a shift in the pointing response. Other studies have shown that in children who underwent enucleation, the egocenter location shifts toward the remaining eye. Is the pointing shift after surgery in children with strabismus the result of a shift in egocenter location? METHODS: Using a modified Roelofs' method for measuring the egocenter, eight children were tested before and a

[Visuo-constructive disorders in right and left brain-damaged patients (author's transl)].

There seems to be some lack of agreement between clinical and experimental findings pertaining to the neurodynamic mechanisms of visuo-constructive disabilities in right and left brain-damaged patients. Clinical studies have revealed qualitative differences between drawing disabilities of right and left hemispheric origin, while experimental data suggest that the same mechanism underlies both types of constructional disorder. In order to reconcile these conflicting findings, the existence of "nuclear" impairment and more "peripheral" disturbances in constructional apraxia is suggested. Nuclear

The perception and recognition of natural object shape from deforming and static shadows.

In this study of the informativeness of shadows for the perception of object shape, observers viewed shadows cast by a set of natural solid objects and were required to discriminate between them. In some conditions the objects underwent rotation in depth while in other conditions they remained stationary, thus producing both deforming and static shadows. The orientation of the light source casting the shadows was also varied, leading to further alterations in the shape of the shadows. When deformations in the shadow boundary were present, the observers were able to reliably recognize and discr

An artist's "motoric perception" and its influence upon the formal aspect of her art.

A young sculptor came to analysis because of depression and work block. Her depression began after she left her family to come to America. She had a childhood depression when she was three when her mother left her for several months. Her childhood depression was "treated" by her older brothers by throwing her from brother to brother until her cries turned to shrieks and finally exhausted sleep. This experience altered her ability to mourn and seemed a model for her use of physical actions at times of stress. The patient maintained that she had no visual memory of objects that she used in her a

Contour adaptation reduces the spreading of edge induced colors.

Brief exposure to flickering achromatic outlines of an area causes a reduction in the brightness contrast of the surface inside the area. This contour adaptation to achromatic contours does not reduce surface contrast when the surface is chromatic (the saturation or colorimetric purity of the surface is maintained). In addition to reducing the brightness of physical luminance contrast, contour adaptation also reduces (or even reverses) the illusory brightness contrast seen in the Craik-O'Brien-Cornsweet illusion, in which two physically identical grey areas appear different brightness because

Is this object balanced or unbalanced? Judgments are on the safe side.

Do we perceive correctly whether a 2-D object is balanced or unbalanced? What would be the cause of biased equilibrium judgments? In two psychometric studies, we varied independently the characteristics of the objects and the equilibrium states. First, we observed that observers were excessively sensitive to the eccentricity of the object top. Second, we found that the subjective transition from "staying upright" to "falling" occurred before the object would have lost balance according to physical laws. To determine the role of naïve physics beliefs, we tested the effect of physical knowledge.

Spatiotemporal characteristics of dynamic feature binding in visual working memory.

It has been proposed that visual working memory can hold a set of four to five coherent object representations. As a test of this proposal, I devised a paradigm called multiple object permanence tracking (MOPT) that measures memory for feature-location binding in dynamic situations. Observers were asked to detect any feature switch in the middle of a regular rotation of a pattern with multiple objects behind an occluder. The feature switch detection performance dramatically declined as the pattern rotation velocity increased. The behavioral evidence for the use of multiple color-shape conjunct

Depth-dependent noise interference reveals scene-structure constraints on contour completion.

Contour completion allows perception of whole objects despite fragmented input, yet the mechanisms that support this process remain debated. Purely local, bottom-up models posit that oriented edge signals propagate across gaps according to two-dimensional (2-D) principles of good continuation, predicting that interference from luminance noise should depend only on local image geometry. In contrast, scene-based frameworks - including accounts that incorporate 3-D surface layout - propose that completion depends on a global analysis of depth, occlusion, and surface assignment, predicting stronge

Visual representations of dynamic actions from static pictures.

We investigated how subjects used their knowledge of biomechanical constraints when judging whether different items were in balance or in the process of falling, as a function of their angle of slant. In the first experiment, the stimuli were pictures of postures of a human body, of a wooden mannequin, and of a skeleton. The results show that for these 3 items, fall responses appeared for a smaller slant angle for a backward slant than for a forward one. This difference may reflect the influence of biomechanical constraints. To verify whether the asymmetry of the responses to the mannequin and

Form from motion parallax and form from luminance contrast: vernier discrimination.

UNLABELLED: Some objects are perfectly camouflaged when stationary, but are clearly visible when moving; the boundaries of such an object are defined entirely by motion parallax. Little is known about the eye's ability to make spatial discriminations between motion-defined objects. In this study, subjects viewed a pseudo-random pattern of dots within which a camouflaged bar was made visible by relative motion of dots. Vernier acuity for the motion-defined bar was 27-45 sec arc for three subjects, much less than the interdot separation of 360 sec arc, much less than the 2 deg receptive field si

Amodal representation of occluded surfaces: role of invisible stimuli in apparent motion correspondence.

A series of demonstrations were created where the perceived depth of targets was controlled by stereoscopic disparity. A closer object (a cloud) was made to jump back and forth horizontally, partially occluding a farther object (a full moon). The more distant moon appeared stationary even though the unoccluded portion of it, a crescent, changed position. Reversal of the relative depth of the moon and cloud gave a totally different percept: the crescent appeared to flip back and forth in the front depth plane. Thus, the otherwise-robust apparent motion of the moon crescents was completely aboli

Distance Deception by Fragmented Objects: How Figures May Alter the Perceived Depth of the Background.

Illusory displacements in depth may be perceived in simple geometric configurations devoid of cues for spatial computation but also in real-world images where there is no shortage of information of this kind. Two of these different contexts drew the attention of vision scientists as sources of depth illusions: the Kanizsa square and the images of statues that Catalano's created with a part missing. Similar depth alterations occur in both cases: the portions of the background surrounded by "inducers" (pacmen or body parts) are perceived as coming to the foreground. These illusory effects appear

Probing intermediate stages of shape processing.

The visual system provides a representation of what and where objects are. This entails parsing the visual scene into distinct objects. Initially, the visual system encodes information locally. While interactions between adjacent cells can explain how local fragments of an object's contour are extracted from a scene, such computations are ill suited to capture extended objects. This article reviews some of the evidence in favor of intermediate-level computations, tuned to the shape of an object, in the transformation from discrete local sampling to representation of complex objects. Two main p

Transformation direction influences shape-similarity judgments.

Three experiments provide evidence that the perceived similarity between two images is systematically affected by the inherent direction of a transformation that links the two. Participants were shown short animations morphing one object into another from the same basic category. They were then asked to make directional similarity judgments ("How similar is object A to object B?") for two stationary images drawn from the morph continuum. Across three experiments, similarity ratings for identical comparisons were higher when the reference object, B, had appeared before the comparison object, A,

Release from cross-orientation suppression facilitates 3D shape perception.

Cross-orientation suppression (COS) in striate cortex has been implicated in the efficient encoding of visual stimuli. We show that release from COS facilitates the decoding of 3-D shape. In planar surfaces overlaid with textures, slanting the surface can increase the visibility of the component parallel to the slant. Since this component provides the orientation flows that signify 3-D shape, the enhancement of visibility facilitates 3-D slant perception. Contrast thresholds reveal that this enhancement results from a decrease in COS when 3-D slant creates a frequency mismatch between texture

Different effects of flash-grab and frame stimuli on position shift and shape distortion.

In the flash-grab effect, an object flashed on a moving background appears to be shifted in the direction of the motion. The same background motion also distorts the flashed object's perceived shape. An even greater shift in the perceived location is produced by the frame effect, raising the question of whether it also produces a shape distortion. This phenomenon is important because the frame effect has been linked to perceptual stabilization during eye movements where the whole visual field acts as the frame. We found that, unlike the flash-grab case, shape was preserved for the frame effect

After-effects of moving textured background in motion-sensitive neurons of anuran optic tectum.

Motion-sensitive neurons in anuran optic tectum were shown to respond to a stationary object centered in the excitatory receptive field, if a textured background moved for a while and then stopped ('motion after-response'). This motion after-response was attributed to a post-inhibitory rebound activation derived from effects of masking the excitatory receptive field center surrounded by an antagonistic inhibitory region. It was suggested that a similar rebound activation mechanism may also be involved in a certain type of perceptual motion after-effects in humans.

Fixational eye movements enable robust edge detection.

Human vision relies on mechanisms that respond to luminance edges in space and time. Most edge models use orientation-selective mechanisms on multiple spatial scales and operate on static inputs assuming that edge processing occurs within a single fixational instance. Recent studies, however, demonstrate functionally relevant temporal modulations of the sensory input due to fixational eye movements. Here we propose a spatiotemporal model of human edge detection that combines elements of spatial and active vision. The model augments a spatial vision model by temporal filtering and shifts the in

Task set and instructions influence the weight of figural priors: A psychophysical study with extremal edges and familiar configuration.

In figure-ground organization, the figure is defined as a region that is both "shaped" and "nearer." Here we test whether changes in task set and instructions can alter the outcome of the cross-border competition between figural priors that underlies figure assignment. Extremal edge (EE), a relative distance prior, has been established as a strong figural prior when the task is to report "which side is nearer?" In three experiments using bipartite stimuli, EEs competed and cooperated with familiar configuration, a shape prior for figure assignment in a "which side is shaped?" task." Experiment
