Emergency Medicine Resident Perceptions of Their Own Throughput Metrics.

Background Operational throughput metrics, such as emergency department (ED) length of stay (LOS) and time to disposition, are frequently and routinely tracked in EDs, but they are not usually integrated into resident education as structured formative feedback. The educational impact of routinely sharing individualized metrics with emergency medicine (EM) residents remains unclear. Methods We conducted a prospective pre-post quality improvement (QI) study at a single academic EM residency program between May and September 2025. Post-graduate year two and three residents received weekly individ

The development and feasibility of a personal health-optimization system for people with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: People with bipolar disorder often experience ill health and have considerably reduced life expectancies. Suboptimal treatment is common and includes a lack of effective medicines, overtreatment, and non-adherence to medical interventions and lifestyle measures. E- and m-health applications support patients in optimizing their treatment but often exhibit conceptual and technical shortcomings. The objective of this work was to develop and test the usability of a system targeting suboptimal treatment and compare the service to other genres and strategies. METHODS: Based on the frame

Development of a coping intervention to improve traumatic stress and HIV care engagement among South African women with sexual trauma histories.

This paper describes the development and preliminary trial run of ImpACT (Improving AIDS Care after Trauma), a brief coping intervention to address traumatic stress and HIV care engagement among South African women with sexual trauma histories. We engaged in an iterative process to culturally adapt a cognitive-behavioral intervention for delivery within a South African primary care clinic. This process involved three phases: (a) preliminary intervention development, drawing on content from a prior evidence-based intervention; (b) contextual adaptation of the curriculum through formative data c

Optimizing Veteran-Facing Materials for Vending Machine-Dispensed HIV Self-Testing: Formative Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Veterans face stigma, privacy concerns, and access barriers to HIV screening. For studies that use at-home HIV self-testing (HIVST) kits distributed through vending machines (VMs), recruitment and educational materials must communicate study purpose and participation options clearly, minimize confusion and stigma, and provide actionable next steps for participants who test outside of clinical settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elicit structured feedback from a small group of veteran advocates living with HIV on recruitment flyers and education, survey, and interview material

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Simulation Curriculum: Electrical Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical injuries are rare but potentially life-threatening medical emergencies that require providers to manage a critically ill patient while recognizing and treating the unique sequelae associated with the diagnosis. This simulation case is designed to give pediatric and emergency medicine residents, fellows, attendings, and nurses the opportunity to practice these skills in a realistic setting. METHODS: This simulation-based curriculum was designed for a high-fidelity mannequin in an emergency department resuscitation room but can be adapted to fit a variety of learning en

The use of voiceovers and review games in teaching immunology.

Active learning and flipped classrooms have gained popularity in higher education due to their ability to improve educational outcomes. This study evaluated whether combining voiceover lectures and review games could improve learner engagement and satisfaction while achieving learning outcomes comparable to those of traditional immunology didactic lectures. A total of 123 first- and second-year medical students were randomly assigned to groups that took formative quizzes on immunology material after exposure to either: (i) a traditional didactic lecture, (ii) a voiceover lecture followed by an

Simulating sharp geometric features in six degrees-of-freedom haptic rendering.

It is a challenging problem to achieve six degree-of-freedom (DoF) haptic simulation of subtle force feelings caused by contacts at sharp geometric features in multi-region contact scenarios. We design a novel sphere-tree model for objects with sharp features and use a configuration-based optimization method to compute feedback force and torque. Given a triangle mesh of an object, a sphere-tree model is created based on dihedral angles between pairs of adjacent triangles. The model consists of a hierarchical sphere-tree for global shape and a linked-list of spheres for local areas with sharp f

Radiographical diagnostic competences of dental students using various feedback methods and integrating an artificial intelligence application-A randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Radiographic diagnostic competences are a primary focus of dental education. This study assessed two feedback methods to enhance learning outcomes and explored the feasibility of artificial intelligence (AI) to support education. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourth-year dental students had access to 16 virtual radiological example cases for 8 weeks. They were randomly assigned to either elaborated feedback (eF) or knowledge of results feedback (KOR) based on expert consensus. Students´ diagnostic competences were tested on bitewing/periapical radiographs for detection of caries, apica

Floor vibrations for motivation and feedback in the rat vibration actuating search task.

Motivating rodents to perform cognitive tasks often relies on the application of aversive stimuli. The Vibration Actuating Search Task (VAST) is a novel open-field task in which gradient floor vibration provides motivation for the rodent to navigate in the direction of diminishing vibration to an unmarked target destination. Using floor vibration as a motivational stimulus may overcome several of the potential confounds associated with stimuli used in other tasks. In a series of three experiments, we determined whether (1) rats exhibit place preference for floor vibration over other aversive s

Shape processing area LO and illusory contours.

Recent functional MRI has demonstrated that illusory contours can activate the primary visual cortex. Our investigation sought to demonstrate whether this correlation reflects computations performed in the primary visual cortex or feedback effects from shape processing area LO. We explored this in a patient who has a bilateral lesion to LO, but a functionally spared V1. Our data indicate that illusory contours are unable to influence behaviour without visual area LO. Whilst we would not claim that our data provide evidence for the 'cognitive' nature of illusory contours, they certainly suggest

Assessing Breast Cancer Survivors' Perceptions of Using Voice-Activated Technology to Address Insomnia: Feasibility Study Featuring Focus Groups and In-Depth Interviews.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survivors (BCSs) are a growing population with a higher prevalence of insomnia than women of the same age without a history of cancer. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has been shown to be effective in this population, but it is not widely available to those who need it. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to better understand BCSs' experiences with insomnia and to explore the feasibility and acceptability of delivering CBT-I using a virtual assistant (Amazon Alexa). METHODS: We first conducted a formative phase with 2 focus groups and 3 in-depth interviews

Development of a Self-management and Peer-Mentoring Intervention to Improve Transition Readiness Among Young Adult Survivors of Pediatric Cancer: Formative Qualitative Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors require lifelong risk-based follow-up care. It should be noted that less than one-third of adult survivors of childhood cancer report any survivor-focused care, and fewer than 1 in 5 obtain risk-based follow-up care. It is thought that this may be due to inadequate transition readiness, including low levels of knowledge, skills, motivation, and resources to make the transition to independent self-management of follow-up care. Interventions that focus specifically on improving the transition from parent-managed to self-managed care are needed. Theory and p

Ensuring flexible optical intubation skills using a portable virtual reality simulator - a validation study.

BACKGROUND: Anesthesiologists must be able to perform flexible optical intubation (FOI) in challenging cases, but the skill is difficult to master and cannot be adequately taught using the traditional apprenticeship model. Mastery learning simulation-based training ensures that all trainees acquire basic competence in a safe environment before progressing to supervised performance on patients. However, mastery learning training programs require a simulation-based test with strong validity evidence and a defensible pass/fail standard. METHODS: We developed a FOI test on a portable virtual reali

Practice Makes Human: AI Conversation and Simulation as Deliberate Practice for Human Connection in CPD.

Future-ready continuing professional development (CPD) must integrate artificial intelligence without eroding the human relationships, empathy, and teamwork that underpin quality care. This brief report describes an immersive interactive AI-driven conversational simulation model that supports non-scripted encounters with lifelike avatars, followed by structured scoring and feedback, and repeated practice opportunities to rehearse difficult conversations with both colleagues and patients before they occur. Grounded in deliberate-practice theory, the approach is examined through the five Key The

Asking for help: the development of a simulation-based mental health application to enhance depression literacy, mental health communication, and help-seeking among Black autistic youth.

Black autistic youth experience disproportionately high rates of depression and face intersecting barriers such as racial discrimination, stigma, and limited access to care, yet few interventions address their needs. This study introduces Asking for Help (A4H), a culturally responsive, simulation-based intervention designed to improve depression literacy and help-seeking skills through an e-learning module and interactive conversation practice. Guided by mental health literacy theory, the Theory of Help-Seeking Behavior, the Theory of Planned Behavior, and Disability Critical Theory, A4H was d

Enhancing Mental Wellness in Kenyan Adolescents and Young People: Protocol for a Platform Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders are a leading cause of disability among adolescents and young people in Kenya, yet access to appropriate and timely support remains severely limited due to shortages of trained professionals, stigma, financial barriers, and geographical inequities. Digital mental health interventions, particularly those leveraging AI, present a promising opportunity to expand access to culturally relevant, low-stigma mental wellness support in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings. However, evidence on the feasibility, usability, and acceptability of AI-powered ment

The Path to Independence: Progression in Entrustment Reflected in Entrustable Professional Activity Ratings.

BACKGROUND: In 2016 the American Board of Surgery introduced Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) as an assessment framework to support competency-based education within general surgery. EPAs operationalize milestones and competencies into a practical assessment framework, enabling timely, targeted feedback and progressive entrustment. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesize that variability in trainee entrustment may identify specific EPAs that function as performance targets, allowing earlier identification of trainees who may need additional support.
