A review of the non-semiaquatic adaptations of extinct crocodylomorphs throughout their fossil record.

Crocodylomorphs constitute a clade of archosaurs that have thrived since the Mesozoic until today and have survived numerous major biological crises. Contrary to historic belief, their semiaquatic extant representatives (crocodylians) are not living fossils, and, during their evolutionary history, crocodylomorphs have evolved to live in a variety of environments. This review aims to summarize the non-semiaquatic adaptations (i.e., either terrestrial or fully aquatic) of different groups from different periods, highlighting how exactly those different lifestyles are inferred for those animals,

Life and death at Dmanisi, Georgia: Taphonomic signals from the fossil mammals.

There are many hypotheses regarding influences on the early hominin biogeographic spread into Eurasia; among them is increased meat-eating. Dmanisi in Georgia is one of the rare Early Pleistocene sites in Eurasia, and here we present primary information and analysis of the medium and large mammal taphonomy, contributing information about site formation and the hominins' interaction with the fauna. Nearly 85% of the specimens come from the B1 stratum. Relative abundances of mammal families demonstrate some bias toward carnivores, especially Canis borjgali, and diverse Felidae species. Bones dis

Cretaceous fossil reveals a new pattern in mammalian middle ear evolution.

The evolution of the mammalian middle ear is thought to provide an example of 'recapitulation'-the theory that the present embryological development of a species reflects its evolutionary history. Accumulating data from both developmental biology and palaeontology have suggested that the transformation of post-dentary jaw elements into cranial ear bones occurred several times in mammals1,2. In addition, well-preserved fossils have revealed transitional stages in the evolution of the mammalian middle ear1,3,4. But questions remain concerning middle-ear evolution, such as how and why the post-de

The isotopic biosignatures of photo- vs. thiotrophic bivalves: are they preserved in fossil shells?

Symbiont-bearing and non-symbiotic marine bivalves were used as model organisms to establish biosignatures for the detection of distinctive symbioses in ancient bivalves. For this purpose, the isotopic composition of lipids (δ13C) and bulk organic shell matrix (δ13C, δ34S, δ15N) from shells of several thiotrophic, phototrophic, or non-symbiotic bivalves were compared (phototrophic: Fragum fragum, Fragum unedo, Tridacna maxima; thiotrophic: Codakia tigerina, Fimbria fimbriata, Anodontia sp.; non-symbiotic: Tapes dorsatus, Vasticardium vertebratum, Scutarcopagia sp.). ∆13C values of bulk organic

The girdles of the oldest fossil turtle, Proterochersis robusta, and the age of the turtle crown.

BACKGROUND: Proterochersis robusta from the Late Triassic (Middle Norian) of Germany is the oldest known fossil turtle (i.e. amniote with a fully formed turtle shell), but little is known about its anatomy. A newly prepared, historic specimen provides novel insights into the morphology of the girdles and vertebral column of this taxon and the opportunity to reassess its phylogenetic position. RESULTS: The anatomy of the pectoral girdle of P. robusta is similar to that of other primitive turtles, including the Late Triassic (Carnian) Proganochelys quenstedti, in having a vertically oriented sc

Histological variability in fossil and recent alligatoroid osteoderms: systematic and functional implications.

Statements about morphological variation in extinct taxa often suffer from insufficient sampling that can be remedied by taking advantage of larger sample sizes provided by related, extant taxa. This analysis quantitatively and qualitatively examines histological and morphological variation of osteoderms from extant and extinct alligatoroid specimens. Statistically significant differences were correlated with changes in osteoderm size and shape. These differences are independent of position on the body, taxonomy, or evolution. Histological variation in alligatoroid osteoderms is due to morphol

Paleoanthropological applications of amino acid racemization dating of fossil bones and teeth.

The general principals of the amino acid racemization based dating technique are discussed. The results obtained at Olduvai Gorge (Tanzania) and Zhoukoudian (China) are presented as an illustration of the paleoanthropological application of racemization dating. Tooth enamel provides the best material for the racemization dating of Middle to Lower Pleistocene deposits, although in some cases bones also yield reliable ages. The racemization method provides a means of dating teeth and bones which are too old for radiocarbon dating. Only small samples are required and processing procedures are str

Cracks in fossil enamels resulting from premortem vs. postmortem events.

Vertebrate enamel preserves a record of fracture-producing strain. Fracturing during the life of the individual is potentially a source of selection for stronger enamel in the course of evolution. To determine if it is possible to recognize such fractures in fossil enamel, cracks in a variety of fossil materials, including enamel-covered holostean scales, crocodilian teeth, theropod and hadrosaurid dinosaur teeth, and mammalian teeth were examined. Cracks that occurred during the life of the individual could be recognized by abrasive wear on edges exposed at the surface of the enamel in areas

Chromosome aberrations in employees from fossil-fueled and nuclear-power plants.

Chromosome aberrations were scored in 59 persons from fossil-fueled plants, in 89 persons from nuclear-power plants and in 23 controls. A significant increase in acentric chromosome fragments and dicentric chromosomes compared to the control group was observed in both types of workers. Moreover, the number of abnormal cells was significantly greater in workers of conventional plants than in those of nuclear-power plants. When adjusted for loss of lymphocytes according to a half-life of 3 years, this difference was also significant for the number of dicentric chromosomes observed. A significant

Morphological cerebral asymmetries of modern man, fossil man, and nonhuman primate.

Cerebral asymmetries are common in modern and fossil man and the great apes. Those occurring most often are listed here: 1. The left sylvian fissure in man is longer than the right and in both fetal and adult brains the posterior end of the right sylvian fissure is commonly higher than the left. Associated with these findings, the left planum temporale is usually longer than the right. 2. The left occipital pole is often wider and usually protrudes more posteriorly than the right. 3. The left lateral ventricle, and especially the occipital horn, is usually larger than the right. 4. If one fron

Sediment accumulation rate predicts the temporal resolution of marine fossil assemblages.

Time averaging (TA), the mixing of noncontemporaneous organisms in fossil assemblages, governs the resolution of paleontological data and determines which biological and environmental processes are recorded in the geological record. To assess variation in TA and its dependence on external drivers, we used amino acid and radiocarbon methods to individually date 7,593 specimens across 384 samples from late Quaternary marine assemblages of calcifying organisms. Bivalve mollusks dominated the data, but 65 samples represented other taxa. Estimates of TA, measured by dispersion of specimen ages with

New fossil hominins from the Upper Laetolil Beds, Laetoli, Tanzania.

New finds of fossil hominins from the Upper Laetolil Beds at Laetoli in northern Tanzania include associated right and left mandibular fragments and three isolated teeth. The specimens are described and compared with those previously collected from Laetoli, as well as with Australopithecus afarensis specimens from other localities in eastern Africa. The additional specimens contribute to a better understanding of the morphological and metrical variation among the hominins from Laetoli and provide the basis for critically reassessing the taxonomic status of A. afarensis. The Laetoli hominins ar

Functional Morphology of the Scaphoid in Extant African Apes, Humans and Fossil Hominins.

OBJECTIVES: The morphology of the hominoid scaphoid has played a key role in functional and evolutionary hypotheses related to the emergence of hominin bipedalism and tool use. However, the scaphoid's complex morphology is challenging to comparatively analyze via traditional 2D linear measurements. This study quantifies scaphoid morphology utilizing 3D geometric morphometrics (3D GM) in African apes, humans and extinct hominins to provide a more holistic functional understanding of scaphoid morphology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We use 3D GM, including anatomical and sliding semi-landmarks, to qu

Jurassic fossil juvenile reveals prolonged life history in early mammals.

Living mammal groups exhibit rapid juvenile growth with a cessation of growth in adulthood1. Understanding the emergence of this pattern in the earliest mammaliaforms (mammals and their closest extinct relatives) is hindered by a paucity of fossils representing juvenile individuals. We report exceptionally complete juvenile and adult specimens of the Middle Jurassic docodontan Krusatodon, providing anatomical data and insights into the life history of early diverging mammaliaforms. We used synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography imaging of cementum growth increments in the teeth2-4 to prov

Fossil-fuel and combustion-related air pollution and hypertension in the Sister Study.

Hypertension is a leading risk factor for disease burden, with more than 200 million disability-adjusted life-years attributed to high blood pressure in 2015. While outdoor air pollution is associated with cardiovascular disease, the joint effect of exposure to air pollution from combustion products on hypertension has rarely been studied. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis to explore the association between combustion-related air pollution and hypertension. Census-tract levels of ambient concentrations of nine fossil-fuel and combustion-related air toxics (biphenyl, naphthalene, polycycl

Ecological correlates of the morphology of the auditory bulla in rodents: Application to the fossil record.

For rodents, hearing is essential to survival. It enables predator evasion, prey detection, and conspecific recognition; it is also likely to be constrained by the physical environment. The resulting hypothetical link between tympanic bulla morphology and ecology has never been investigated across a broad array of rodent species before. Such link may enable the determination of the ecological affinities of many fossil species only known from partial skulls. In this study, we used geometric morphometrics to quantify the shape of the auditory bulla of 197 specimens representing 91 species from 1

Climate and air-quality benefits of a realistic phase-out of fossil fuels.

The combustion of fossil fuels produces emissions of the long-lived greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and of short-lived pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, that contribute to the formation of atmospheric aerosols1. Atmospheric aerosols can cool the climate, masking some of the warming effect that results from the emission of greenhouse gases1. However, aerosol particulates are highly toxic when inhaled, leading to millions of premature deaths per year2,3. The phasing out of unabated fossil-fuel combustion will therefore provide health benefits, but will also reduce the extent to which the warmi
