BACKGROUND: Bouldering is known for a high risk of hamate injuries. Over 75 % of sport climbers have signs of upper extremity overuse injuries. Training overload corresponds with bone edema and was linked to fractures of the hamate. To date, no study has addressed the pathomechanism of hamate fracture in climbing. The aim of this study was to investigate the stability of the hamate in a biomechanical setup under the tension of the flexor tendons.
METHODS: 20 fresh-frozen, unfixed human forearms were used for two test series. The test stand consisted of an modified isokinet. Tension was applie

BACKGROUND: Sport-induced injuries particularly affect young, healthy, and active individuals. Running, a popular and accessible sport, can cause a wide range of injuries, including stress fractures. Stress fractures can occur during high-intensity training or competitions, especially among well-trained amateurs and professional athletes. Adequate diagnosis can be complicated by the typically young age, unremarkable medical history, and vital condition of the patient. Stress fractures present insidiously, and this is specifically the case with stress fractures of the femoral neck. Timely inter

Stress fractures of the fifth metatarsal (zones 2 and 3) remain a challenging clinical problem. It has been well established that nonsurgical treatment has unacceptably high nonunion and refracture rates. Surgical fixation remains the treatment of choice in the athletic cohort, and intramedullary screw fixation with a solid screw has been established as the most predictable means of achieving a successful outcome. Recently, the use of a plantar plate has also been advocated as has been shown in some studies to be more biomechanically advantageous. The use of bone grafting at the primary surger

Stress fractures are part of a continuum of changes in healthy bones in response to repeated mechanical deformation from physical activity. If the activity produces excessive repetitive stress, osteoclastic processes in the bone may proceed at a faster pace than osteoblastic processes, thus weakening the bone and augmenting susceptibility to stress fractures. Overall stress fracture incidence is about three cases per 1,000 in active duty Servicemembers, but it is much higher among Army basic trainees: 19 per 1,000 for men and 80 per 1,000 for women. Well-documented risk factors include female

Stress fractures of the first rib on the dominant throwing side are well-described in baseball pitchers; however, lower thoracic rib fractures are not commonly recognized. While common in other sports such as rowing, there is scant literature on these injuries in baseball. Intercostal muscle strains are commonly diagnosed in baseball pitchers and have a nearly identical presentation but also a highly variable healing time. The diagnosis of a rib stress fracture can predict a more protracted recovery. This case series presents two collegiate baseball pitchers on one team during the same season

In competitive athletes, stress fractures of the tibia, foot, and ankle are common and lead to considerable delay in return to play. Factors such as bone vascularity, training regimen, and equipment can increase the risk of stress fracture. Management is based on the fracture site. In some athletes, metabolic workup and medication are warranted. High-risk fractures, including those of the anterior tibial diaphysis, navicular, proximal fifth metatarsal, and medial malleolus, present management challenges and may require surgery, especially in high-level athletes who need to return to play quick

Critical review of the available evidence indicates that a relationship exists between sufficient vitamin D status and stress fractures, although genetic and environmental factors are involved as well. Patients at high risk for stress fracture should be educated on protective training techniques and the potential benefits of supplementation with combined calcium and vitamin D, particularly if increased exercise is planned during winter or spring months, when vitamin D stores are at their lowest. The amount of vitamin D intake required is highly variable depending on many factors including sun

Clinical cases in mineral and bone metabolism : the official journal of the Italian Society of Osteoporosis, Mineral Metabolism, and Skeletal Diseases2011eng
Sacral stress fractures are an unusual but curable cause of low-back pain that should be considered in differential diagnosis, particularly in elderly osteoporotic patients. Rarely, they may occur in young women during the last trimester of pregnancy or a few weeks after delivery. Encompassing fatigue and insufficiency fractures, the occurrence of sacral stress fractures appears to be relatively under-reported, because of the general lack of awareness of this condition and the non-specificity of symptoms. Plain radiographs of the pelvis are the first exam performed but they are often inconclus

The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of stress fractures with age, sex, sport level, sporting activity, and skeletal site in athletes seen at our sports medicine clinic between September 1991 and May 2001. During these 10 years, 10 726 patients (6415 males, 3861 females) visited our clinic because of sport-related injuries, and 196 patients [125 males (1.9%), 71 females (1.8%)] sustained stress fractures. The average age of the patients with stress fractures was 20.1 years (range 10-46 years); 84 patients (42.6%) were 15-19 years of age, and 68 (34.7%) were 20-24 years

Our aim was to identify factors predisposing athletes to multiple stress fractures, with the emphasis on biomechanical factors. Our hypothesis was that certain anatomic factors of the ankle are associated with risk of multiple stress fractures of the lower extremities in athletes. Thirty-one athletes (19 men and 12 women) with at least three separate stress fractures each, and a control group of 15 athletes without fractures completed a questionnaire focusing on putative risk factors for stress fractures, such as nutrition, training history, and hormonal history in women. Bone mineral density

PURPOSE: To manage the complication of stress fractures in foldable acrylic intraocular lenses.
METHODS: During an implantation of a foldable acrylic intraocular lens (AcrySof, Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, Texas), the optic was noted to have developed paracentral stress fractures along the fold approximately 50% deep.
RESULTS: The lens was explanted and replaced without difficulty.
CONCLUSIONS: The observed complication can be avoided by recognizing that it might occur, wetting the lens before slowly folding it, and inspecting it carefully before insertion.

The stress fracture is a common injury seen by healthcare professionals caring for athletes. They have been described in numerous areas of the skeletal system and in multiple sports. However, they are most commonly seen in the lower extremities, with running the reported cause in most cases. Stress fractures result from repetitive, cyclic loading of bone which overwhelms the reparative ability of the skeletal system. Mechanically, three events may lead to stress fractures. First, the applied load can be increased. Secondly, the number of applied stresses can increase. Finally, the surface area

Stress fractures are considered a relatively common athletic injury. Some authors also feel this disorder may be overlooked in many nonathletic patients. Three cases of stress fractures are presented. All had classical clinical pictures; however, two were athletes and one was not. The athletes' stress fractures were suspected early in the disease evolution, confirmed with a bone scan and proper care instituted to prevent extended morbidity. The nonathlete's case was misdiagnosed by another practitioner and allowed to progress to the level of a true fracture. Extended morbidity followed this ca

Three military recruits developed stress fractures in the sacral wing during rigorous elite basic training. Stress fractures in the sacrum have previously not been reported in a healthy population. Sacrum, like every bone of the pelvis and the lower limb that participates in weight bearing, may be susceptible to stress fracture following sustained excessive physical activity.

We describe two unusual exercise-related stress fractures, one in the sacroiliac joint of a long distance runner, the other in the body of the scapulae of an above-knee amputee. Each were detected on a 2-hour delay bone scan. To our knowledge, neither have been described scintigraphically. The bilateral scapular fracture is an unreported entity, and the fractured SI joint is a very uncommon site for an overuse injury.

BACKGROUND: Stress fractures in general are common injuries; however, there is limited literature on metacarpal stress fractures in athletes. Our objective is to contribute the first systematic review of metacarpal stress fractures in athletes, with a particular focus on epidemiology, presentation, and outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic review regarding metacarpal stress fractures in athletes was performed via PubMed, EMBASE, MedLine, Cochrane, and Web of Science. Inclusion criteria consisted of case reports and case series of metacarpal stress fractures in athletes. Preferred Reporting Items fo
