Repression and splitting: towards a method of conceptual comparison.

An attempt is made to compare two psychoanalytic concepts which by 'belonging' to different psychoanalytic groups have come to be defined and used differently. The paper is also an inquiry into the possibility of a comparative psychoanalytic method. The two concepts are 'repression' and 'splitting of the ego' and an examination is made of the semantic similarities and differences. Some clinical material is offered that adds indicative clinical evidence to test the semantic comparison. The aim is to answer the question: Are the terms simply alternative ones for similar clinical phenomena? The p

Primary femininity and female genital anxiety.

Primary femininity implies that female development proceeds along lines that generate anxiety about damage and loss similar to the fears of castration that trouble males. The female fears are classified as fear of painful penetration, fear of loss of pleasure, and fear of loss of procreative function. The first two fears are illustrated with clinical material showing the ways in which they manifest themselves in adult women.

Sadomasochism in the neuroses conceived of as a pathological compromise formation.

Masochistic phenomena in adults are discussed as derivatives of conscious and/or unconscious fantasies. These masochistic fantasies are always associated with conscious and/or unconscious narcissistic and sadistic fantasies. These fantasies, like all fantasies in adults, are conceived of as compromise formations. After a selected review of the literature, analytic data are presented to highlight the clinical advantages of a contemporary elaboration of the structural hypothesis for the understanding of sadomasochistic and sadonarcissistic phenomena.

Belief, hope and faith.

A case of hysteria is presented in order to create a frame of reference for the author's approach to the concepts of hope, belief and faith. A difference between hope as a 'sad passion' (which is here called regressive hope) and hope as a principle of mental functioning is established. The concept of hope will at first always be based on beliefs--either beliefs organised in the paranoid-schizoid position (called here fragmented and delusional beliefs)--or those organised from the depressive position (complex systems of beliefs, which end up being dogmatic); the latter typically occur in neurot

Sadomasochism in the perversions: some thoughts on the destruction of reality.

The author summarizes and develops some of her viewpoints on the perversions (outlined in several of the books and articles she has written). For her all the perversions, whatever their content, develop against an anal sadomasochistic backdrop. Their aim is to destroy reality. Reality, from a psychosexual perspective, may be defined as resulting from the existence of the father separating the mother and the child. This may be formulated in another way: reality is recognition of sexual and generational differences. Or, yet again: mother and father have a procreative sexuality, whereas the child

Freud Gradiva and the Aesthetic Unconscious: Lessons for the Plastic Surgeon.

Wilhelm Jensen Gradiva (1903) and Freud 1907 interpretation reveal how repression, delusion, and recollection shape the psychic transformation of desire. This triadic process offers valuable insight into the hidden emotional dynamics that often underlie aesthetic motivation in plastic-surgery patients, where the pursuit of beauty may reflect unresolved inner conflict. A hermeneutic-conceptual analysis was conducted on Freud Delusion and Dream in Jensen's Gradiva , complemented by reflective observation of aesthetic-surgery consultations. Theoretical correspondences were drawn between Freud psy

Transference symptom.

Transference symptom is a hazy notion in Freud's writings. The notion is presented here as a particular moment in the crystallization of the transference neurosis. It results from a double cathexis of the analytic frame and the analyst resulting in a symbolic distortion that is represented plastically within the session, as occurs in dreams. The transference symptom proceeds from two different preconscious cathexes, one attached to the reality of the frame, the other to the drive linked to the analyst. A psychic space is thereby opened up for interpreting both the resistance and the unconsciou

An analyst's regressive reverie: a response to the analysand's illness.

A psychoanalytic session is described where both the analyst and analysand experienced a dream-like state associated with the theme of childhood illness. The analyst's countertransference took the form of a hypnogogic reverie concerning a dying boy's plea for his help, while the analysand's transference reaction was to re-experience the analyst as the negligent anaclitic father and himself the neglected child. The analyst's frustrated reverie and the patient's frightened angry response was a regressive expression of what previously had been unconsciously shared, but not totally congruent, fant

Withstanding trauma: the significance of Emma Eckstein's circumcision to Freud's Irma dream.

The author considers the medical rationale for Wilhelm Fliess's operation on Emma Eckstein's nose in February 1895 and interprets the possible role that this played in Freud's dream of Irma's injection five months later. The author's main argument is that Emma likely endured female castration as a child and that she therefore experienced the surgery to her nose in 1895 as a retraumatization of her childhood trauma. The author further argues that Freud's unconscious identification with Emma, which broke through in his dream of Irma's injection with resistances and apotropaic defenses, served to

Freud on play, games, and sports fanaticism.

Much has been written in the secondary literature on Freud's aggression-release perspective vis-à-vis competitive sports. Very little has been written, however, on Freud's own explicit contribution to play, games, and sport. That is likely the result of Freud's reluctance to take up them--especially from the gamesman's and sportsman's points of view. One can, however, tease out the development of Freud's thoughts on games, play, and sport through a careful examination of his corpus over time. In doing so, one finds an early view of play and games, where the drives behind those activities are s

Some Aspects for Understanding Psychodynamic Processes This article discusses psychodynamics as a central concept in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic psychotherapy. Psychodynamics refers to the interplay of unconscious conflicts, affects, relationships, and early experiences that shape the development of thinking, feeling, and behaviour, while also capturing the complexity of the psyche, which cannot be readily understood in a straightforward manner. The article emphasizes that psychic development invariably takes place within relationships with others and that internal and external influences

Karl Abraham's revolution of 1916: from sensual sucking to the oral-aggressive wish of destruction.

The author argues that "The First Pregenital Stage of the Libido" (Abraham 1916-1917) expounds a new conception of orality, i.e., of purposeful oral aggression directed against an object during the first stage of psychic development. This conception is shown to be contrary to Freud's view of orality as elaborated in Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905), as well as in other writings of late 1914 and 1915. Abraham's conception ignores fundamental dimensions of Freud's thinking during these years, namely, the difference between autoerotism/narcissism and object love, on the one hand, an

Fear and Prompting: AI, Originary Technicity, and Colonialism.

This paper examines psychoanalysts' affective and defensive responses to artificial intelligence (AI) through the lens of originary technicity, the philosophical claim that technology is constitutive of the human rather than external to it. Drawing on Freudian theory-particularly the uncanny-alongside object relations and posthumanist thought, the author argues that psychotherapy's moral panic about AI reflects a splitting of the human from the technological that mirrors colonialist Subject/Other dualisms. Prompts are explored as drive derivatives, and the dyadic engagement between user and ch

Understanding conversion disorder: How contemporary brain imaging is shedding light on an early Freudian concept.

Conversion disorder, also called Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder is poorly understood by many in the medical profession and is associated with considerable health care costs. Sigmund Freud, in an early, pre-psychoanalytic period paper, suggested that hysterical motor paralyses arose from a "functional or dynamic lesion" which was no different from an organic one, but rather an altered expression of it. He linked this functional brain disturbance to an excess of affect, a faulty conceptualization on the part of the symptomatic individual of how the affected organ works, and elements of

Trauma freed of the concept of determinism: is it possible to have a dialogue between psychoanalysis and neuroscience around the question of singularity?

This article introduces a model of dialogue between psychoanalysis and neuroscience that is based on an account of the economic dimension of trauma. From the outset Freudian theory took into account the singularity of each subject's response to traumatic events, setting aside any linear paradigm in the causality of symptoms. In 1980, the introduction of the nosographic category of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) within the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) contributed to an increased social recognition for sufferers. Yet, it also resulted in a form of standardization in a clinical

Space travels of the Wolfman: phobia and its worlds.

In this paper, we present a spatial reading of Freud's famous case study, "The Wolfman" (1918). By reading the Wolfman and his phobias spatially, we want to show how psychoanalysis is not a linear story of personal development, but reveals instead the unconscious estates and competing places that our desires both travel in, but also get stuck and waylaid in. The unconscious "estates" that the Wolfman travels through, constituting his phobias, is something we aim to illuminate. These worlds are not simply "many," they are specific -- but they nonetheless unfold in plural and non-linear ways. Ph
