Correlation Between Glycemic Biomarkers and Continuous Glucose Monitoring Metrics in Chronic Kidney Disease: A Systematic Review and Correlation Meta-Analysis.

Background/Objectives: Accurate assessment of glycemic control in patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is challenging because alterations associated with CKD affect the performance of conventional glycemic biomarkers, such as glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), glycated albumin (GA), and fructosamine, while continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) offers a more comprehensive assessment of glycemic exposure; however, a quantitative synthesis of the correlation between these biomarkers and CGM-derived metrics across CKD stages is lacking. To systematically evaluate the correlation between

Use of large scale EHR data to evaluate A1c utilization among sickle cell disease patients.

BACKGROUND: The glycated hemoglobin (A1c) test is not recommended for sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. We examine ordering patterns of diabetes-related tests for SCD patients to explore misutilization of tests among this underserved population. METHODS: We used de-identified electronic health record (EHR) data in the Cerner Health Facts™ (HF) data warehouse to evaluate the frequency of A1c and fructosamine tests during 2010 to 2016, for 37,151 SCD patients from 393 healthcare facilities across the United States. After excluding facilities with no A1c data, we defined three groups of facili

Effects of the DASH4D Diet on Biomarkers of Glycemia in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Secondary Analysis of the DASH4D Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension for Diabetes (DASH4D) diet (a DASH-style diet tailored for diabetes) on biomarkers of glycemia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: In this controlled feeding trial, adults with type 2 diabetes were fed four diets in a random order: DASH4D diet and comparison diet (representative of a typical American diet), each with higher and lower sodium. Each feeding period lasted 5 weeks. Using a modified intention-to-treat approach, we estimated the effect of the DASH4D (versus comparison) diet on fructosamine, fasting glucose, an

A pilot study comparing the diabetogenic effects of dexamethasone and prednisolone in cats.

Fourteen cats received either daily prednisolone (4.4 mg/kg per os [PO]) or dexamethasone (0.55 mg/kg PO) for 56 days. These doses were clinically equipotent. Serum fructosamine and urine glucose were measured on days 0, 28, and 56. Insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and peak insulin secretion were measured in each group prior to and at the end of the courses of glucocorticoid administration. On day 56, the prevalence of glucosuria was significantly greater (P=0.027), and a trend was seen toward greater fructosamine concentrations (P=0.083) in dexamethasone-treated cats compared to predni

Insulin resistance and breast-cancer risk.

Life-style has a major influence on the incidence of breast cancer. To evaluate the effects of life-style related metabolic-endocrine factors on breast cancer risk we conducted a case-control study comparing 223 women aged 38 to 75 years presenting with operable (stage I or II) breast cancer and 441 women of the same age having no breast cancer, who participated in a population-based breast cancer screening program. Women reporting diabetes mellitus were excluded. Sera from 110 women of the same age group presenting with early stage melanoma, lymphoma or cervical cancer were used as a second '

Sex-Dependent Effects of Exogenous Irisin on Pancreatic Endocrine-Cell Immunophenotype in Post-Weaning Wistar Rats.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Irisin is an exercise-associated myokine with reported effects on β-cell survival, insulin secretion, and pancreatic tissue protection in experimental models of metabolic stress. However, less is known about its influence on the developing endocrine pancreas under physiological conditions. Accordingly, the aim of the present study was to determine whether exogenous recombinant FNDC5/irisin is associated with changes in pancreatic endocrine-cell immunophenotype and islet-level markers of cell turnover in male and female Wistar rats. METHODS: Thirty-two 3-week-old Wistar

Lack of effect of corticosteroid injection at the shoulder joint on blood glucose levels in diabetic patients.

The effect of systemic glucocorticosteroids on the metabolism of glucose is well known; however, there are no reports on the effect of intraarticular steroids on the metabolism of glucose in diabetic patients. Controlled or near controlled diabetic patients who have self-monitoring devices for home monitoring of blood glucose with shoulder pain were offered an intraarticular crystalloid steroid injection of 35 mg of methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) at the shoulder joint after failure of pharmacological and physical therapy. Patients were asked to record blood glucose levels before and 2 h afte

Falsely Decreased HbA1c in a Type 2 Diabetic Patient Treated with Dapsone.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss a case of a falsely low hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in a transplant patient treated with dapsone and its implications. HbA1c is widely used as a measure of glycemic control in diabetic patients. With the increasing transplant population, it is important to be mindful of medications used in this population that can affect HbA1c and to use other measures of glycemic control to guide treatment decisions. METHODS: We present details of the case and review the relevant literature. RESULTS: A 61-year-old patient received a liver transplant in 2012 and subsequently was noted to hav

Effect of Epstein-Barr Virus Infection on Selected Immunological Parameters in Children with Type 1 Diabetes.

Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic disorders with different etiologies, pathogeneses and clinical pictures, characterized by chronic hyperglycemia due to abnormal insulin secretion or action. Type 1 diabetes mellitus is the most common type of diabetes mellitus in children and adolescents, accounting for about 90% of diabetes in the population under the age of 18. The etiopathogenesis of type 1 diabetes is multifactorial. The disease occurs as a result of the interaction of three factors: genetic predisposition, environmental factors and the immune response. Research in recent years has

Onset and evolution of nephropathy in rats with spontaneous diabetes mellitus.

The occurrence of renal diabetic complications was studied in diabetic nonobese IIM/FmeSS (eSS) rats. The results were compared with eumetabolic Wistar rats paired by sex and age. Between 6 and 12 months of age, eSS male rats had higher fructosamine values and glucose intolerance as well as increasing proteinuria and uremia. Enhancement in water, calcium and phosphorus fractional excretion with a concomitant lower sodium excretion, was observed from 12 months of age on. 18- and 21-month-old eSS rats exhibited fasting hyperglycaemia and rising values of fructosamine, glucose intolerance and gly

Monitoring the severity of metabolic disturbances and effectiveness of management of gestational diabetes mellitus.

To monitor the severity of metabolic disturbances during gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), some risk factors existing at the time of diagnosis must be considered, including age of the pregnant women, early gestational age at diagnosis, high fasting blood glucose level, high HbA1c or fructosamine levels, or high amniotic fluid insulin level. The degree of OGTT abnormality will also influence the therapeutic approach, although the insulin response to the glucose challenge seems to be of little discriminating value. Effectiveness of the treatment can be appreciated by self-monitoring of blood

Identification of chronic stress biomarkers in dairy cows.

Stress in dairy herds can occur from multiple sources. When stress becomes chronic because of a long duration and inability of animals to adapt, it is likely to deeply affect the emotional state, health, immunity, fertility and milk production of cows. While assessing chronic stress in herds would be beneficial, no real consensus has emerged from the literature regarding the indicators of interest. The goal of this study was to compare and evaluate potential biomarkers for chronic stress after inducing stress over a 4-week period through severe overstocking, restricted access to feed and isola

A Pilot Study Investigating the Clinically Significant Association Between Overweight, Hyperlipidemia, and Insulin Resistance in Dogs With Chronic Liver Disease.

The liver plays a central role in glucose and lipid metabolism. In human medicine, glucose metabolism alterations and insulin resistance are commonly associated with chronic liver disease (CLD), particularly in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). In veterinary medicine, however, the role of glucose metabolism in CLD remains poorly understood. We enrolled 67 client-owned dogs, including healthy controls, hepatopathic dogs with (metabolic hepatopathy [MH]) or without (non-metabolic hepatopathy [non-MH]) metabolic factors such as overweight and hyperlipidemia, chroni
