Conventional agrochemicals are underutilized due to their large particle sizes, poor foliar retention rates, and difficult translocation in plants, and the development of functional nanodelivery carriers with high adhesion to the plant body surface and efficient uptake and translocation in plants remains challenging. In this study, a nanodelivery system based on a pectin-encapsulated iron-based MOF (TF@Fe-MOF-PT NPs) was constructed to enhance the utilization of thifluzamide (TF) in rice plants by taking advantage of the pectin affinity for plant cell walls. The prepared TF@Fe-MOF-PT NPs exhib

Bees carry out vital ecosystem services by pollinating both wild and economically important crop plants. However, while performing this function, bee pollinators may encounter potentially harmful xenobiotics in the environment such as pesticides (fungicides, herbicides and insecticides). Understanding the key factors that influence the toxicological outcomes of bee exposure to these chemicals, in isolation or combination, is essential to safeguard their health and the ecosystem services they provide. In this regard, recent work using toxicogenomic and phylogenetic approaches has begun to ident

Alternaria alternata that threatens pepper production and causes major economic harm is responsible for the leaf spot/blight disease. Chemical fungicides have been widely employed; unfortunately, fungicidal resistance is a current concern. Therefore, finding new environmentally friendly biocontrol agents is a future challenge. One of these friendly solutions is the use of bacterial endophytes that have been identified as a source of bioactive compounds. The current study investigates the in vivo and in vitro fungicidal potential of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens RaSh1 (MZ945930) against pathogenic

BACKGROUND: Pepper blight, caused by Phytophthora capsici, is a destructive soilborne disease, which poses a serious threat to pepper, Capsicum annuum L., production. Chemical fungicides, which mainly are used to control pepper blight, have a negative effect on the environment, rendering biological control as a promising alternative to maintain the balance between ecology and pest management. The purpose of this study was to screen the biocontrol bacteria, reduce the dosage of fungicides and increase the stability of biocontrol bacteria, and to find the mixing ratio of biocontrol bacteria and

Downy mildew (DM; Plasmopara viticola) is amongst the most severe fungal diseases in viticulture and the reason for the majority of fungicide applications. To reduce synthetic and copper-based fungicides, there is an urgent need for natural alternatives, which are being increasingly tested by the industry and the research community. However, their mode of action remains unclear. Therefore, our study aimed to investigate the transcriptomic changes induced by oregano essential oil vapour (OEOV) in DM-infected grapevines. OEOV was applied at different time points before and after DM infection to

BACKGROUND: Chemical products against fungi and oomycetes pose serious environmental issues. In the last decade, the use of less impacting active ingredients was encouraged to reduce chemical inputs in viticulture. In this study, the effect of different antifungal compounds on grapevine agronomic, physiological, and molecular responses in the vineyard was evaluated in addition to protection against powdery and downy mildews.
RESULTS: In 2 years and in two Vitis vinifera cultivars (Nebbiolo and Arneis), a conventional crop protection approach, based on traditional fungicides (sulfur and copper

Derivatives of morpholine are biologically active organic compounds with special structures discovered in multiple drugs. As a result of the terminal pharmacophore of action and extraordinary activity, they attracted fair attention with regard to pesticide innovation and development. Analysis of brief structure-activity relationships and the summarization of the characteristics of pesticides containing morpholine fragments with efficient activity are key steps in the development of novel pesticides. This review primarily overviews morpholine compounds with insecticidal, fungicidal, herbicidal,

Apple production is a dynamic agricultural system in which pesticides are applied recurrently to control pests and diseases in the orchards. Understanding the impact of such agents on non-target organisms is crucial to minimise unintended consequences while maintaining their use in crop protection. The aim was to test how fungicide, herbicide, elicitor, and their combinations affect the physiology of the epiphytic moss Hypnum cupressiforme that naturally occurs in orchards. Our results showed that both dodine and diflufenican applied separately had a strong negative effect on moss physiology r

Fusarium graminearum, which causes Fusarium head blight (FHB) in cereals, is one of the most devastating fungal diseases by causing great yield losses and mycotoxin contamination. A major bioactive ingredient, venturicidin A (VentA), was isolated from Streptomyces pratensis S10 mycelial extract with an activity-guided approach. No report is available on antifungal activity of VentA against F. graminearum and effects on deoxynivalenol (DON) biosynthesis. Here, VentA showed a high antagonistic activity toward F. graminearum with an EC50 value of 3.69 μg/mL. As observed by scanning electron micro

Expressing temporal changes in the use of pesticides, based not only on amounts (masses) but also on their toxicity for different species groups, was proposed as a sensible approach for evaluating potential environmental risks. Here, we calculated the total applied toxicity (TAT) between 1995 and 2019 for Germany, mapped it, and compared it to the US TAT and other risk indicators. Results show that the German TAT for terrestrial vertebrates decreased over time by about 20%. The TAT increased by a factor of three for fishes, largely due to insecticides, by a factor of two for soil organisms, la

Conservation efforts have been implemented in agroecosystems to enhance pollinator diversity by creating grassland habitat, but little is known about the exposure of bees to pesticides while foraging in these grassland fields. Pesticide exposure was assessed in 24 conservation grassland fields along an agricultural gradient at two time points (July and August) using silicone band passive samplers (nonlethal) and bee tissues (lethal). Overall, 46 pesticides were detected including 9 herbicides, 19 insecticides, 17 fungicides, and a plant growth regulator. For the bands, there were more frequent

Dithiocarbamates (DTCs) belong to a group of compounds used as fungicides in food production and can be divided into three major groups. Since DTCs easily oxidise and hydrolyse in alkaline and acidic medium respectively, precautions have to be implemented during preparation/homogenisation and extraction of samples. As such, test samples are commonly prepared individually by cutting into small pieces just before the digestion of DTCs with a hot acid to give carbon disulphide (CS2) and the results are expressed as CS2 without any differentiation of individual DTCs. However, individual DTCs have

The evolution of resistance has been seen across all major classes of xenobiotics, including antimicrobial drugs and agricultural pesticides. This repeated emergence of resistance is a case of phenotypic parallel evolution, but often the parallelism extends to the molecular level too, with multiple species gaining the same mutation in response to the same chemical treatment. We review the degree of repeatability in target-site resistance mutations affecting different classes of site-specific agricultural fungicides used in crop protection, comparing the extent to which resistance in different

Grapevine downy mildew (GDM) is one of the most serious diseases of grapevines. Limitations to the use of copper-based products in organic agriculture according to the European Union (EU) regulation EU/2002/473 and the later EU Commission implementing regulation 2018/1981 have promoted a search for alternatives. This 5-year field trial evaluated the effectiveness of several strategies against GDM using different chitosan-based formulations and application rates in comparison with other natural compounds applied individually or with copper hydroxide. Trials were performed in commercial vineyard

Catalytic asymmetric synthesis has become an essential tool for the enantioselective synthesis of pharmaceuticals, natural products, and agrochemicals (mainly fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and pheromones). With continuous growing interest in both modern agricultural chemistry and catalytic asymmetric synthesis chemistry, this review provides a comprehensive overview of some earlier reports as well as the recent successful applications of various catalytic asymmetric syntheses methodologies, such as enantioselective hydroformylation, enantioselective hydrogenation, asymmetric Sharpless

The study deals with the effects of herbicides (metribuzin, tribenuron-methyl, fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) and fungicides (tebuconazole, epoxiconazole, azoxystrobin) applied to soil as free pesticides or as slow release formulations embedded in a biodegradable composite matrix on the structure of the soil microbial community. The matrix consisted of a natural biopolymer poly-3-hydroxybutyrate [P(3HB)] and a filler-one of the natural materials (peat, clay, and wood flour). The soil microbial community was characterized, including the major eco-trophic groups of bacteria, dominant taxa of bacteria and f

It is a common practice to add salicylhydroxamic acid (SHAM) into artificial medium in the in vitro sensitivity assay of fungal phytopathogens to the quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicides. The rationale for adding SHAM is to inhibit fungal alternative oxidase, which is presumed to be inhibited by secondary metabolites of plants. Therefore, the ideal characteristics of SHAM should be almost nontoxic to phytopathogens and have no significant effect on control efficacy of fungicides. However, this study showed that the average effective concentration for 50% inhibition (EC50) of mycelial gro

With the anticipated population growth in the coming decades, the changing regulatory environment, and the continued emergence of resistance to commercial pesticides, there is a constant need to discover new lead chemistries with novel modes of action. We have established a portfolio of approaches to accelerate lead generation. One of these approaches capitalizes on the rich bioactivity of natural products (NPs), highlighted by the numerous examples of NP-based crop protection compounds. Within Corteva Agriscience and the affiliated preceding companies, NPs have been a fruitful approach, for n

Recent outbreaks of Sclerotinia stem rot (SSR) of soybean in Ohio, along with new fungicides and cultivars with resistance to this disease, have led to a renewed interest in studies to update disease management guidelines. The effect of host resistance (in moderately resistant [MR] and moderately susceptible [MS] cultivars) and chemical control on SSR and yield was evaluated in 12 environments from 2014 to 2016. The chemical treatments evaluated were an untreated check, four fungicides (boscalid, picoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, and thiophanate-methyl), and one herbicide (lactofen) applied at so
