[An unusual case of hepatic abscess].

Right upper quadrant pain with chronic malaise and fever can be the clinical manifestation of a hepatic infection. An uncommon cause for the disease is hepatic actinomycosis. Actinomycosis was common in the preantibiotic era but is less frequent nowadays; consequently its timely recognition has become more difficult. The clinical and radiological findings often resemble other inflammatory and neoplastic lesions. We report a case of a mixed anaerobic liver abscess including fusobacteria and actinomycetes, without apparent predisposing factor. The diagnosis was obtained by CT-guided percutaneous

Genetic and functional analysis of the bovine uterine microbiota. Part II: Purulent vaginal discharge versus healthy cows.

The aim of this study was to characterize, using metagenomic shotgun DNA sequencing, the intrauterine microbial population and its predicted functional diversity within healthy cows and cows presenting purulent vaginal discharge (PVD). Twenty Holstein dairy cows from a single farm were enrolled in the study at 25 to 35 d postpartum. Purulent vaginal discharge was diagnosed by retrieving and scoring vaginal discharge using the Metricheck device (Simcro, Hamilton, New Zealand). Intrauterine samples for metagenomic analysis were collected by the cytobrush technique from 8 cows diagnosed with PVD

Microbiota-driven epigenetic modifications in gastrointestinal cancer: Implications for pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies.

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract hosts a complex microbiota that plays a crucial role in maintaining health and contributing to disease, including cancer. This narrative review explores the role of gut microbiota in driving epigenetic modifications associated with GI cancers. We highlight key bacterial phyla such as Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Fusobacteria, and explain how their representative species, including Fusobacterium nucleatum, Bacteroides fragilis, Lactobacillus sp., and Escherichia coli, influence host gene expression through mechanisms such as DNA

Fusobacterium nucleatum endocarditis: a case report and literature review.

Fusobacteria is anaerobic gram-negative rods, which frequently colonize the oral cavity and can rarely cause deadly diseases in humans. The two most commonly found in this group of bacteria are fusobacterium necrophorum and fusobacterium nucleatum. Only a handful of cases of endocarditis due to fusobacterium have been reported. We describe an 86-year-old male who had a recent tooth extraction presenting to the emergency department with weakness lightheadedness, and pain in his right elbow. He had a low-grade fever of 100.8°. The patient was discharged home but came back less than 24 hours with

Perioral dermatitis: Diagnosis, proposed etiologies, and management.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Perioral dermatitis is a common cutaneous condition characterized by acneiform facial eruptions often with an eczematous appearance. A granulomatous subtype exists in addition to the classic variant. While topical corticosteroids have been largely implicated in this condition, its etiology is not completely understood. METHODS: Using the keywords "corticosteroids," "dermatology," "fusobacteria," "perioral dermatitis," and "periorificial dermatitis," we searched the databases PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE to find the relevant literature. Only articles in English were chosen.

Isolation of obligate anaerobic bacteria from bovine abscesses in sites other than the liver.

A survey in Japan showed that of 2036 slaughtered cattle 58(3%) had abscesses in sites other than the liver. In 21 of the affected animals the lesions were pulmonary and in 32 abdominal (excluding hepatic); in five animals the lesions were found elsewhere (muscle 2, skin 2, bone 1). Nineteen (33%) of the 58 cattle also had abscesses in the liver. Obligate anaerobes alone were isolated from 17(29%) of the affected animals (Fusobacterium necrophorum 14, Bacteroides spp. 2, Peptostreptococcus anaerobius 1). A mixture of obligate anaerobes and aerobes or facultative anaerobes was isolated from 31

Male Tract Microbiota and Male Infertility.

In recent years, several studies have analyzed the composition of the male genital tract microbiota and its changes in infertility or in different situations associated with infertility. The aim of this narrative review is to obtain more insight on this topic; in particular, to describe actual evidence about changes in the semen microbiota in patients with infertility, male tract infections, or HPV infections. In semen, an increase in semen Prevotella spp. is associated with oligozoospermia and with obesity-associated asthenozoospermia; an increase in Pseudomonas is more frequently associated

The Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis as a Key to Neuropsychiatric Disorders: A Mini Review.

The central nervous system (CNS) is closely related to the gastrointestinal tract, mainly through regulating its function and homeostasis. Simultaneously, the gut flora affects the CNS and plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of neurologic and neuropsychological disorders such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or autism spectrum disorder. The population of gut microorganisms contains more than one billion bacteria. The most common are six phyla: Proteobacteria, Actinomyces, Verucomicrobia, Fusobacteria, and dominant Bacteroides wit

Patients With LR-HPV Infection Have a Distinct Vaginal Microbiota in Comparison With Healthy Controls.

Condyloma acuminatum (CA) is a benign epithelium hyperplasia mainly caused by human papillomavirus (HPV), which is now the second most common viral sexually transmitted infection (STI) in China. In total, 90% of CA patients are caused by the low-risk HPV 6 and 11. Aside from low-risk HPV infection there are likely other factors within the local microenvironment that contribute to CA and there has been related research before. In this study, 62 vaginal specimens were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The diversity of the vaginal microbiota was higher and the composition was different wit

Impact of the Microbiota and Gastric Disease Development by Helicobacter pylori.

Microorganisms in humans form complex communities with important functions and differences in each part of the body. The stomach was considered to be a sterile organ until the discovery of Helicobacter pylori, but nowadays, it is possible to demonstrate that other microorganisms beyond H. pylori can colonize the gastric mucosa and that the diverse microbiota ecosystem of the stomach is different from the mouth and the esophagus, and also from the small intestine and large intestine. H. pylori seems to be the most important member of the gastric microbiota with the highest relative abundance wh

[Bacterial overgrowth syndrome in the small intestine: pathogenesis, clinical significance and therapy tactics].

The redundant bacterial growth syndrome in the small intestine is associated with the increased total semination of over 10(5) CFU/ml presented by enterobacteria, bacteroids, clostridia, fusobacteria, etc. It is developed at the dysfunction of the gastrointestinal tract, insufficient bacteria inhibition at the time when they come from the large intestine (atony, stasis, bypasses) and is accompanied by the enhanced intestinal barrier permeability along with chronic diarrhea and intoxication. Intestinal absorption disorders cause B12-deficiency anemia, hypovitaminosis and protein deficiency. The

Dysbiosis modulates CD8+ tissue-resident memory cells through a mechanism requiring polyamine metabolism during HIV infection.

Polyamines play crucial roles in modulating T lymphocyte functions. Here, we demonstrate that the oral mucosa of people living with HIV (PLWH), characterized by active polyamine metabolic pathways, exhibits significantly diminished IFN-γ expression and reduced abundance of CD8+ tissue-resident memory (TRM) cells. Salivary 16S rRNA sequencing revealed elevated levels of Fusobacteria, negatively correlating with the levels of CD8+ TRM-like cells in PLWH. In vitro experiments showed that Fusobacterium nucleatum (FN) produced putrescine, which is known to be enriched in PLWH mucosa. Polyamines, HI

Portulaca oleracea polysaccharides reduce serum lipid levels in aging rats by modulating intestinal microbiota and metabolites.

Metabolic diseases characterized by dyslipidemia are common health problems for elderly populations. Dietary fiber intake is inversely associated with the risk of dyslipidemia. This study investigated the effects of Portulaca oleracea polysaccharide (POP) on the intestinal microbiota and its metabolites in aging rats using 16S rRNA sequencing and metabolomics techniques. Our results showed that POPs reduced the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes (F/B), relative abundance of Fusobacteria, and levels of triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), alanine aminotransferase (ALT)

Fusobacterial infections: an underestimated threat.

The involvement of fusobacteria in a wide range of human and animal infection has long been recognised. Slow-growing anaerobes, often in polymicrobial culture, they are not always identified but are present mainly in the oropharynx, from where they are bloodborne to other sites or aspirated into the lung. Fusobacterium nucleatum is commonly found in periodontal disease and produces tissue irritants such as butyric acid, proteases and cytokines. It has strong adhesive properties due to the presence of lectins, and these outer-membrane proteins mediate adhesion to epithelia and tooth surfaces, a

Oceanivirga salmonicida gen. nov., sp. nov., a member of the Leptotrichiaceae isolated from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

A pleomorphic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, indole-, oxidase- and catalase- negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile bacterium was originally isolated in 1992 from moribund, seawater farmed Atlantic salmon with multifocal tissue necrosis. Strain AVG 2115T displayed considerable similarities with Streptobacillus moniliformis, one of the two etiological agents of rat bite fever, and has been stored as Streptobacillus sp. NCIMB 703044T. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses, this strain displayed >99 % sequence similarities with uncultured bacterial clones from the digestive tracts of mari

Characterization of the fecal microbiome during neonatal and early pediatric development in puppies.

Limited information is available describing the development of the neonatal fecal microbiome in dogs. Feces from puppies were collected at 2, 21, 42, and 56 days after birth. Feces were also collected from the puppies' mothers at a single time point within 24 hours after parturition. DNA was extracted from fecal samples and 454-pyrosequencing was used to profile 16S rRNA genes. Species richness continued to increase significantly from 2 days of age until 42 days of age in puppies. Furthermore, microbial communities clustered separately from each other at 2, 21, and 42 days of age. The microbia

Characteristics of the Gut Bacterial Composition in People of Different Nationalities and Religions.

High-throughput sequencing has made it possible to extensively study the human gut microbiota. The links between the human gut microbiome and ethnicity, religion, and race remain rather poorly understood. In this review, data on the relationship between gut microbiota composition and the nationality of people and their religion were generalized. The unique gut microbiome of a healthy European (including Slavic nationality) is characterized by the dominance of the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidota, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteria, and Verrucomicrobia. Among the African population, the
