Lemierre's syndrome, a systemic anaerobic infection caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, is characterized by an acute oropharyngeal infection, septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, sepsis, and multiple metastatic infections. It commonly leads to septic arthritis and occasionally to osteomyelitis. In the preantibiotic era, this infection was nearly universally fatal. Today it still poses a potentially grave threat to the young patients affected. Prompt recognition with appropriate debridement and antibiotic treatment results in complete recovery in most cases. We report a case o

A 43-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Blood testing showed elevated levels of C-reactive protein and white blood cells. Computed tomography revealed multilocular masses of the right hepatic lobe, reticulonodular shadowing on both lungs, left kidney masses, and aortic arch aneurysm. Fusobacterium nucleatum was isolated from the hepatic abscess after percutaneous transhepatic drainage. Because of severe dental caries, he was diagnosed with liver abscess caused by dental infection with F. nucleatum. Administration of cefmetazole and meropenem

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium necrophorum is a well-known cause of Lemirre's disease and accumulating evidence support its pathogenic role in peritonsillar abscess while its role in recurrent and chronic tonsillitis is uncertain. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of oropharyngeal colonisation with F. necrophorum and Beta-haemolytic streptococci in a cohort of patients scheduled for tonsillectomy due to recurrent or persistent throat pain, and to evaluate the dynamics of colonisation with repeated sampling during a follow-up time of 6 to 8 months.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative, obligate anaerobe and oncogenic oral bacterium that employs a diverse array of surface-exposed adhesins to colonize extra-oral tissues. Among these, Fusobacterial adhesin A (FadA) is a well-characterized virulence factor known for its ability to target epithelial and endothelial tight junctions, disrupt barrier integrity, and activate pro-tumorigenic signaling pathways implicated in colorectal cancer. FadA also facilitates placental and fetal colonization, contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth and stillbirth. While its func

Recent genome-based phylogenetic investigations of the Fusobacterium nucleatum group have revealed that genomes currently annotated as F. nucleatum (sensu stricto) bifurcate into two separate phylogenetic groups: a large cluster containing the F. nucleatum type strain and a smaller cluster possibly representing a novel species. To further investigate this, we searched our strain archive for Fusobacterium isolates potentially representing the smaller cluster. A strain Vestland17T, cultured from a polymicrobial brain abscess, had been found to share less than 99% similarity with the F. nucleatum

Colorectal cancer (CRC) typically initiates with mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli (Apc) gene, followed by the influence of environmental factors. Among these, Fusobacterium nucleatum has emerged as an important CRC-enriched microbial species with demonstrated tumor-promoting potential. To investigate the contribution of F. nucleatum in the context of oncogenic mutations, physiologically relevant mouse models are essential. While Apcmin/+ mice have been employed to study F. nucleatum-associated CRC, prior studies have not systematically evaluated the effects of different bacterial in

INTRODUCTION: It is rare to have Fusobacterium PLAs without concomitant Lemiere's syndrome.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Two healthy, young males with a history of binge drinking developed cryptogenic Fusobacterium liver abscesses, but without Lemiere's syndrome. We highlight differences in disease severity, bacterial species, and management.
DISCUSSION: Further research is needed to determine if Fusobacterium may cause PLAs in young men who consume alcohol. Source control in small abscesses may be more important than previously considered. Given the similarities in patient geography and hospitalizatio

Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is a Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium predominantly found in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital system. It accounts for less than 1% of anaerobic bacterial infections in clinical settings and can lead to a spectrum of severe infections. This report details the case of a 55-year-old male who presented with a one-month history of productive cough, acute right-sided chest pain, dyspnea, and fever. Initial examinations showed elevated inflammatory markers and a right-sided pleural effusion on chest CT. Despite empirical therapy, the pat

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) acts as a procarcinogenic bacterium in colorectal carcinoma (CRC) by regulating the inflammatory tumor microenvironment (TME). Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), which can be generated by persistent inflammation, have been recently considered to be significant contributors in promoting cancer progression. However, whether NETs are implicated in Fn-related carcinogenesis is still poorly characterized. Here, we explored the role of NETs in Fn-related CRC as well as their potential clinical significance.
METHODS: Fn was measured in tissue specimens an

Aspirin is a chemopreventive agent for colorectal adenoma and cancer (CRC) that, like many drugs inclusive of chemotherapeutics, has been investigated for its effects on bacterial growth and virulence gene expression. Given the evolving recognition of the roles for bacteria in CRC, in this work, we investigate the effects of aspirin with a focus on one oncomicrobe-Fusobacterium nucleatum We show that aspirin and its primary metabolite salicylic acid alter F. nucleatum strain Fn7-1 growth in culture and that aspirin can effectively kill both actively growing and stationary Fn7-1. We also demons

Multiple studies have implicated microbes in the development of inflammation, but the mechanisms remain unknown. Bacteria in the genus Fusobacterium have been identified in the intestinal mucosa of patients with digestive diseases; thus, we hypothesized that Fusobacterium nucleatum promotes intestinal inflammation. The addition of >50 kDa F. nucleatum conditioned media, which contain outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), to colonic epithelial cells stimulated secretion of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). In addition, purified F. nucleatum OMVs, but

OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests a possible role of Fusobacterium nucleatum in colorectal carcinogenesis, especially in right-sided proximal colorectum. Considering a change in bowel contents and microbiome from proximal to distal colorectal segments, we hypothesized that the proportion of colorectal carcinoma enriched with F. nucleatum might gradually increase along the bowel subsites from rectum to cecum.
METHODS: A retrospective, cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 1,102 colon and rectal carcinomas in molecular pathological epidemiology databases of the Nurses' Health Study and the Heal

Fusobacterium nucleatum is an identified proinflammatory autochthonous bacterium implicated in human colorectal cancer. It is also abundantly found in patients suffering from chronic gut inflammation (inflammatory bowel disease), consequently contributing to the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. Majority of the studies have reported that colorectal tumors/colorectal adenocarcinomas are highly enriched with F. nucleatum compared to noninvolved adjacent colonic tissue. During the course of multistep development of colorectal cancer, tumors have evolved many mechanisms to resist the antitumor im

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungal pathogen found as part of the normal oral flora. It can be coisolated with Fusobacterium nucleatum, an opportunistic bacterial pathogen, from oral disease sites, such as those involved in refractory periodontitis and pulp necrosis. The physical coadherence between these 2 clinically important microbes has been well documented and suggested to play a role in facilitating their oral colonization and colocalization and contributing to polymicrobial pathogenesis. Previous studies indicated that the physical interaction between C. albicans and F. nucleatu

The formation of biofilm by anaerobic, Gram-negative bacteria in the subgingival crevice plays an important role in the development of chronic periodontitis. The aim of this study was to characterize the role of coaggregation between Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella species in biofilm formation. Coaggregation between F. nucleatum and Prevotella species was determined by visual assay. Effect of co-culture of the species on biofilm formation was assessed by crystal violet staining. Effect of soluble factor on biofilm formation was also examined using culture supernatant and two-compartment

During a 3-year prospective laboratory-based study in Denmark from 1998 to 2001, all patients who were diagnosed with localised Fusobacterium necrophorum infections were registered with the purpose of describing the variety of localised infections caused by F. necrophorum, especially in the head. We found 267 patients, most of them previously healthy, with localised F. necrophorum infections in the head and neck. In children, F. necrophorum caused otitis media and solitary abscess formation in cervical lymphadenitis. In adolescents, F. necrophorum was found in 21% of peritonsillar abscesses. W

Classical Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by severe sepsis with metastatic abscess formation in young, previously fit people from a primary head or neck focus. The causative organisms are the anaerobic fusobacteria, most commonly Fusobacterium necrophorum. We describe the evaluation, therapeutic interventions and management of a patient with Lemierre's syndrome who presented in septic shock with multiple organ dysfunction. The patient required immediate interventions including endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation, fluid resuscitation, inotropic support, bilateral thoracostom
