More Than Just a Periodontal Pathogen -the Research Progress on Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a common oral opportunistic bacterium that can cause different infections. In recent years, studies have shown that F. nucleatum is enriched in lesions in periodontal diseases, halitosis, dental pulp infection, oral cancer, and systemic diseases. Hence, it can promote the development and/or progression of these conditions. The current study aimed to assess research progress in the epidemiological evidence, possible pathogenic mechanisms, and treatment methods of F. nucleatum in oral and systemic diseases. Novel viewpoints obtained in recent studies can provide knowle

Rare isolation of Fusobacterium varium from a case of Fournier's gangrene.

Fusobacterium is a gram negative obligate anaerobic bacilli, a normal inhabitant of gastrointestinal tract, oropharynx and female genital tract. Here we report a case of Fourniers gangrene from which Fusobacterium varium has been isolated along with certain other pathogens. There are only a few reported cases of Fusobacterium varium in literature and it has never been reported from Fournier's gangrene. Through this report we intend to shed some light on the pathogenic potential of anaerobes which are considered as normal flora.

Necrobacillosis--primary anaerobic septicaemia due to Fusobacterium necrophorum.

Necrobacillosis is a severe septicaemic illness caused by an anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus, Fusobacterium necrophorum. It occurs predominantly in young people and is characterised by oropharyngeal infection and subsequent metastatic complications, frequently involving the lungs and/or large joints. We report four recent cases in previously healthy young men, describing the clinical features of the disease (including autopsy findings), and the problems associated with diagnosis and treatment.

The role of Fusobacterium nucleatum in the pathogenesis of endometriosis: A microbial and microenvironmental perspective.

Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory gynecological condition characterized by the ectopic growth of endometrial-like tissue, with an unclear etiology and limited treatment efficacy. Recent studies implicate the oral and gut commensal bacterium Fusobacterium nucleatum in the pathogenesis of endometriosis, with uterine colonization reported in up to 64% of affected women. This review highlights the potential role of F. nucleatum in disease progression, particularly through its metabolic activation within the endometrial microenvironment. We explore the contribution of key bacterial metabolit

Influence of in-vivo endotoxin liberation on anti-anaerobic antimicrobial efficacy.

The ability of cefoxitin, clindamycin, imipenem, meropenem, metronidazole and piperacillin-tazobactam to cause gram-negative anaerobic bacteria to release endotoxin and the influence of such liberated endotoxin on antibiotic efficacy were investigated in in-vivo experiments in animal models. Experimental infections in various animal models (mice, hamster and infant rats) with cultures of wild and reference strains of Bacteroides fragilis group and Fusobacterium spp. were carried out by injecting these animals with different inocula (10(6), 10(7) and 10(8) cfu/ml) of the bacterial suspension, A

Otogenic Fusobacterium necrophorum meningitis.

A case of meningitis secondary to acute suppurative otitis media in a previously healthy child is reported. The only organism isolated from blood after aerobic and prolonged anaerobic culture was identified as Fusobacterium necrophorum. Complete recovery followed treatment with surgery and prolonged antibiotic therapy. The role of anaerobes in the development of meningitis, the isolation and identification of Fusobacterium necrophorum, the clinical presentations of F. necrophorum infection and the choice of antibiotics in the treatment of these infections are discussed.

Two cases of diskitis attributable to anaerobic bacteria in children.

Diskitis, an inflammation of the intervertebral disk, is generally attributable to Staphylococcus aureus and rarely Staphylococcus epidermidis, Kingella kingae, Enterobacteriaciae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. In many cases, no bacterial growth is obtained from infected intervertebral discs. Although anaerobic bacteria were recovered from adults with spondylodiscitis, these organisms were not reported before from children. The recovery of anaerobic bacteria in 2 children with diskitis is reported. Patient 1. A 10-year-old male presented with 6 weeks of low back pain and 2 weeks of low-grade f

A Mouse Model for Fusobacterium nucleatum-Mediated Experimental Periodontitis.

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium that naturally colonizes the human oral cavity and is recognized as an etiological agent in both local and systemic diseases, including periodontitis, preterm birth, and colorectal cancer. To advance research into the systemic impact of oral-origin F. nucleatum-associated pathologies, it is crucial to optimize the use of animal models. In this study, we present a detailed protocol for establishing a mouse model of experimental periodontitis through oral inoculation of bacteria, including F. nucleatum. This model provides a valuabl

Global research trends in Fusobacterium nucleatum and colorectal cancer: a bibliometric and visual analysis.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum) is increasingly recognized as a key pathobiont in colorectal cancer (CRC), driving tumor progression through immune evasion, inflammation, and metabolic reprogramming. Nevertheless, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the literature on F. nucleatum and CRC remains a gap in the current research landscape. Here, we integrate bibliometric trend analysis with a narrative synthesis of key mechanistic insights. Unlike traditional narrative reviews, this study systematically quantifies global research trends, collaboration networks, and thematic

Septic arthritis of the hip due to Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Anaerobic bacteria are uncommon pathogens in septic arthritis. We report a case of pyarthrosis of the right hip caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum, following a transient synovitis in an otherwise healthy boy. There are only a few cases involving this species described in the literature. This report illustrates the difficulty of isolating this unusual organism and emphasises the usefulness of the Bactec blood culture bottles for the recovery of anaerobic bacteria.

A case of adolescent pelvic inflammatory disease caused by a rare bacterium: Fusobacterium nucleatum.

BACKGROUND: Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a polymicrobial infection that typically occurs in sexually active females. PID is rare in premenarchal and/or noncoital young women; however, there are case reports of PID occurring in virginal females. We present the first reported case of PID associated with F. nucleatum. In this unusual case of PID in an adolescent, the responsible organism may have originated from the patient's oral cavity. CASE: A 13-year-old noncoital Caucasian female presented to a tertiary children's hospital with fever and acute abdominal/pelvic pain. She had experien

Fusobacterium necrophorum sepsis with cerebral infarction.

We have described the case of a 23-month-old female child in whom Fusobacterium sepsis progressed to cerebral infarction despite therapy with intravenous chloramphenicol and ampicillin. Some clinical improvement was noted upon addition of metronidazole to the treatment regimen. The child survived, but has severe neurologic sequelae. Physicians should suspect anaerobic infection in children who have signs of severe neurologic infection and in whom cultures are negative for aerobes. In selected cases, early treatment with metronidazole may be helpful.

[Septicemia due to Fusobacterium necrophorum. A case report].

Septicemia due to the anaerobic gram-negative bacillus Fusobacterium necrophorum is exceptional. It may originate in tonsillitis or intestinal or gynecological infection. We report one case in a young man with head injury. Fusobacterium necrophorum is frequently associated with aerobic pathogens such as streptococcus or staphylococcus (more than fifty per cent of the cases). Metastatic localizations are numerous, often pleuro-pulmonary (infarction, abscess), hepatic (cytolysis) and meningeal (purulent meningitis, cerebral abscess), and in some instances articular (joint swelling) or embolic. Fusobacterium Nucleatum Subspecies Animalis Influences Proinflammatory Cytokine Expression and Monocyte Activation in Human Colorectal Tumors.

Chronic infection and associated inflammation have long been suspected to promote human carcinogenesis. Recently, certain gut bacteria, including some in the Fusobacterium genus, have been implicated in playing a role in human colorectal cancer development. However, the Fusobacterium species and subspecies involved and their oncogenic mechanisms remain to be determined. We sought to identify the specific Fusobacterium spp. and ssp. in clinical colorectal cancer specimens by targeted sequencing of Fusobacterium 16S ribosomal RNA gene. Five Fusobacterium spp. were identified in clinical colorect
