Staphylococcus spp and Antibiotic Resistance in Cave Versus City Bats in Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is a major global health concern, yet its prevalence in wildlife remains poorly understood. Bats, due to their ecological diversity and mobility, can serve as indicators of environmental antimicrobial resistance. This study compares the diversity of Staphylococcus spp. and antibiotic resistance patterns between bats from a cave and an urban area in northeastern Gabon. METHODS: A total of 655 bats were captured from Zadié Cave and Makokou City. Rectal and oral swabs were collected, and Staphylococcus spp. were isolated using mannitol media and identified via t

Psychological repercussions of breast or uterine cervical cancer disclosure to women in Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Breast and cervical cancers are major health issues globally, with particularly high burdens in sub-Saharan Africa, including Gabon. Limited epidemiological data and insufficient attention to the psychological impacts of these cancers highlight critical research gaps. This study aimed to explore the psychological repercussions experienced by Gabonese women following the disclosure of a breast or cervical cancer diagnosis. METHODS: A mixed-methods cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2023 at the Institut de Cancérologie d'Akanda. Women recently diagnosed with breas

Characterization and diversity of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in two hospitals in Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) poses a significant global health threat, particularly within the ESKAPE pathogens. Surveillance in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Gabon, remains limited despite reported high rates of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL)-positive S. aureus and emerging MRSA clones. METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted at two hospitals in Northern (CHRO) and Southeastern (CHUAB) Gabon. Nasal swabs were collected from 200 patients (100 per hospital) upon admission (D0) and serially over 6 days. Environmental swabs were also taken. S.

Epidémiology of malaria from 2019 to 2021 in the southeastern city of Franceville, Gabon.

BACKGROUND: In Gabon, a new national malaria control policy was implemented in 2003. It resulted in a decrease in the number of malaria cases in the country. In March 2020, the disruption of routine health services due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in cases and deaths due to malaria. However, in Franceville, south-east Gabon, no data on malaria cases recorded before, during and after the COVID-19 epidemic has been published. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological characteristics of malaria in Franceville from 2019 to 2021. METHODS: A retrospec

Molecular identification of head lice collected in Franceville (Gabon) and their associated bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Pediculus humanus, which includes two ecotypes (body and head lice), is an obligate bloodsucking parasite that co-evolved with their human hosts over thousands of years, thus providing a valuable source of information to reconstruct the human migration. Pediculosis due to head lice occurred each year throughout the world and several pathogenic bacteria, which are usually associated with body lice, are increasingly detected in them. In Gabon, where this pediculosis is still widespread, there is a lack of data on genetic diversity of head lice and their associated bacteria. METHODS:

Population Pharmacokinetics of Mefloquine Intermittent Preventive Treatment for Malaria in Pregnancy in Gabon.

Mefloquine was evaluated as an alternative for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) due to increasing resistance against the first-line drug sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP). This study determined the pharmacokinetic characteristics of the mefloquine stereoisomers and the metabolite carboxymefloquine (CMQ) when given as IPTp in pregnant women. Also, the relationship between plasma concentrations of the three analytes and cord samples was evaluated, and potential covariates influencing the pharmacokinetic properties were assessed. A population pharmacokinetic analysis

Epidemiology of concomitant infection due to Loa loa and Mansonella perstans in Gabon.

BACKGROUND: The filarial parasites Loa loa and Mansonnella perstans are endemic in the central and western African forest block. Loa loa is pathogenic and represents a major obstacle to the control of co-endemic filariae because its treatment can cause fatal complications such as encephalitis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 4392 individuals aged over 15 years were studied both by direct examination and a concentration technique. The overall prevalence rates were 22.4% for Loa loa microfilaremia, 10.2% for M. perstans microfilaremia, and 3.2% for mixed infection. The prevalence of both filari

Malignant lymphomas in Gabon (equatorial Africa): a morphologic study of 72 cases.

A retrospective morphologic analysis was conducted on 72 malignant lymphomas collected in Gabon, a country of the equatorial area in Africa. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs) were by far the most frequent type of lymphoma, representing 67 cases (93%); only five patients (7%) had Hodgkin's disease. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas were classified according to two modern systems (Kiel and Working Formulation). The age distribution of NHL patients was bimodal, with the highest peak in the 0 to 14 years age group (these cases were almost exclusively associated with Burkitt's lymphomas), and with the second hi

Gastrointestinal parasite assemblages in wild mammals from two forest localities in Gabon.

Gastrointestinal parasite assemblages are influenced by host compatibility, exposure, behavior, and environmental conditions; however, baseline data remain limited in Central Africa. We characterized gastrointestinal parasite morphotypes in 279 fecal samples collected from five wild mammal taxa at Lopé National Park and Makatamangoye, Gabon. Parasites were identified using flotation and sedimentation techniques and classified to the lowest morphologically defensible taxonomic level. The analysis included overall infection rates, infracommunity richness, sample-based rarefaction, and presence-a

Epileptiform seizures revealing neurocysticercosis: report of two clinical cases in Libreville, Gabon.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most common helminth infection of the central nervous system. It is caused by the larval form of the tapeworm Taenia solium and is increasingly recognized as a major cause of neurologic disease worldwide. Epilepsy is the usual mode of revelation. Neuroimaging, including computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, combined with serodiagnostic techniques have led to this increased recognition. We report on two cases (one co-infected with the HIV) of NCC diagnosed in 2006 and 2008 at the Omar Bongo Ondimba Army Teaching Hospital. New-onset epilepsy revealed
