Late gadolinium enhancement among survivors of sudden cardiac arrest.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the role of contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in the workup of patients with aborted sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) and in the prediction of long-term outcomes. BACKGROUND: Myocardial fibrosis is a key substrate for SCA, and late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) on a CMR study is a robust technique for imaging of myocardial fibrosis. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all survivors of SCA who were referred for CMR studies and performed follow-up for the subsequent occurrence of an adverse event (death and appropriate de

Complex imaging features of accidental cerebral intraventricular gadolinium administration.

Gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) is a contrast agent commonly used for enhancing MRI. In this paper, the authors report on 2 cases of postoperative inadvertent administration of Gd-DTPA directly into a ventriculostomy tubing side port that was mistaken for intravenous tubing. Both cases demonstrated a low signal on MRI throughout the ventricular system and dependent portions of the subarachnoid spaces, which was originally believed to be CSF with areas of T1 shortening in the nondependent portions of the subarachnoid spaces, and misinterpreted as basal leptomeningeal en

Quantitative analysis of late gadolinium enhancement in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) with the late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) technique allows the detection of myocardial fibrosis in Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The aim of this study was to compare different methods of automatic quantification of LGE in HCM patients. METHODS: Forty HCM patients (mean age 48 y, 30 males) and 20 normal subjects (mean age 38 y, 16 males) underwent CMR, and we compared 3 methods of quantification of LGE: 1) in the SD2 method a region of interest (ROI) was placed within the normal myocardium and enhanced myocardium was considered as havin

Clinical significance of endolymphatic imaging after intratympanic gadolinium injection.

CONCLUSION: Using three-dimensional real inversion recovery (3D-real IR) and three-dimensional fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), various degrees of endolymphatic hydrops were observed in the basal and upper turns of the cochlea and in the vestibular apparatus after intratympanic gadolinium (Gd) injection. MRI may contribute to our understanding of inner ear diseases and may be a useful addition to intratympanic drug therapy in the management of inner ear diseases. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 3D-real IR MRI and 3D-FLAIR MRI with clinical symptoms and s

Diagnosis of Bell palsy with gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging.

Bell palsy is a condition resulting from a peripheral edematous compression on the nervous fibers of the facial nerve. This pathological condition often has clinical characteristics of no importance and spontaneously disappears in a short time in a high percentage of cases. Facial palsy concerning cranial nerve VII can also be caused by other conditions such as mastoid fracture, acoustic neurinoma, tumor spread to the temporal lobe (e.g., cholesteatoma), neoformation of the parotid gland, Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome, and Ramsay-Hunt syndrome. Therefore, it is important to adopt an accurate d

Gadolinium-enhanced multidetector CT angiography of the thoracoabdominal aorta.

A 93-year-old patient with a cardiac pacemaker and biochemical renal failure presented with back pain suspicious for dissection. We performed gadolinium-enhanced thoracoabdominal multidetector CT angiography using eight-channel multidetector CT. Uniform aortic enhancement of 140 HU was sufficient to exclude aortic dissection and defined an unruptured infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance dacryocystography in patients with epiphora.

PURPOSE: Digital subtraction dacryocystography (DS-DCG) is considered the "gold standard" in the assessment of the nasolacrimal duct system but fails to delineate the soft tissue structures that surround the lacrimal drainage apparatus. The goal of this study was to compare high resolution MR surface coil imaging with DS-DCG to determine the value of gadolinium-enhanced MR dacryocystography (MR-DCG) in patients with epiphora. METHOD: We performed bilateral MR-DCG and unilateral DS-DCG in 11 patients (aged 3-70 years) with epiphora using Gd-DTPA-containing eyedrops (Magnevist; 78.63 mg of Gd/m

Dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MR findings in infantile hepatic hemangioendothelioma.

We report a case of a 2 1/2-year-old girl presenting with abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and hepatomegaly. In spite of the unusual age at presentation, dynamic gadolinium-enhanced MR findings, which have not been previously illustrated, proved to be highly specific for the diagnosis of infantile hepatic hemangioendothelioma because of the characteristic enhancement pattern.

[Bell's facial paralysis. Study with magnetic resonance and gadolinium].

The facial never was investigated by gadolinium-enhanced MR in 7 patients diagnosed as Bell's Palsy. All cases showed complete facial paralysis, and were studied on the acute phase of the disease. Most Bell's palsy patients demonstrate facial nerve enhancement, usually in the tympanic and labyrinthine segments. No gadolinium enhancement on the opposite facial never was seen in this serie. Because Gad-MR does not appear to influence the therapeutic decision, it may not be necessary in the management of Bell's Palsy.

Gadolinium-enhanced MRI in central nervous system Behçet's disease.

Two cases of central nervous system Behçet's disease, studied by gadolinium-enhanced MRI, are presented. In one patient, whose clinical picture was dominated by a brain syndrome, the gadolinium enhancement resolved with clinical improvement, although the hyperintense areas in the mesencephalon on T2-weighted images persisted. In the second, who had a pseudobulbar palsy and a mild right hemiparesis, there were many abnormal areas, but an enhancing focus in the posterior limb of the left internal capsule was probably the lesion responsible for the hemiparesis.

Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in facial nerve lesions.

We present our 2-year experience with a contrast enhancement agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examining facial nerve pathology. Characteristics of the agent gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid are reviewed. The radiographic capability to differentiate pathologic vs. normal facial nerves based on enhancement and a change in signal intensity generated by the nerve is demonstrated. Experience with facial nerve disorders including Bell's palsy, facial nerve neuromas, a facial nerve graft site, postoperative facial paralysis, and traumatic facial paralysis is presented. The abil

Gadolinium-DTPA-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in optic neuropathies.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), after intravenous administration of the paramagnetic agent gadolinium-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA), showed enhancement of the optic nerve in 7 of 13 patients with acute optic neuritis. Four of these patients had Gd-DTPA enhancement of the intracranial optic nerve and two had involvement of the optic nerve at the orbital apex, ipsilateral to the eye with visual loss. Gadolinium-DTPA enhancement of both intracranial optic nerves was seen in one of two patients with bilateral retrobulbar neuritis. Two patients with acute radiation-induced optic ne

Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging in temporal bone lesions.

A 2-year experience with an enhancement agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is examined through case presentations. Characteristics of the agent Gadolinium DTPA/Dimeglumin are reviewed. Radiographic capabilities in enhanced versus unenhanced MRI are compared. Temporal bone lesions, including acoustic neuromas and facial nerve neuromas, are presented. Recent experience with facial nerve enhancement in Bell's palsy is also presented. Greater accuracy in defining small temporal bone lesions and increased delineation of facial nerve involvement appear to be significant benefits with enhanced

Gadolinium: a review on concentrations and impacts in marine and coastal systems.

This review synthesizes current knowledge on gadolinium (Gd) contamination in marine and coastal environments from 209 scientific publications. Of these, 83 studies were selected for detailed analysis, focusing specifically on marine invertebrate taxa to ensure a targeted examination of Gd's effects on key sentinel species within this group, with 69 papers (83.1 %) focusing on Gd concentrations in marine and coastal ecosystems, reporting concentrations ranging from 0.00002516 to 1176.77 μg/L. Out of the 83 papers, 14 (16.9 %) were related to Gd ecotoxicological effects through laboratory expos

Gadolinium impairs male steroidogenesis: In vivo and in vitro evidence.

The increasing use of gadolinium (Gd) in industrial and medical fields made it a hazardous environmental pollutant. Once ingested through water and/or food, Gd may potentially have toxic effects on all body districts. However, the effects of Gd on testicular function have been little explored. In the present study, adult male rats were allowed to drink GdCl3 or Gd2O3 (10-20-40 mg/Kg b.w.) for 4 weeks. Following Gd treatment, a significant decrease in steroidogenic-related protein (StAR, 3β-HSD, 17β-HSD, and 5α-Red) expressions, T and DHT levels, and spermatozoa concentration were observed. To

The gadolinium hypothesis for fibromyalgia and unexplained widespread chronic pain.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic, painful, heterogeneous, and common disorder carrying a substantial socio-economical burden. It lacks effective cures and its aetiology is still unknown. There exists evidence for central and peripheral neurological contribution to the symptoms but grasping the real source of abnormal nervous system sensitization remains an ongoing challenge. There exists an association between an injury/trauma and the onset of the symptoms, but a causal relationship has not been yet sufficiently supported by scientific evidence. I postulate a role for gadolinium-based contrast a
