To clarify the mechanisms underlying gait disturbance secondary to age-related white matter changes (ARWMC), cerebral perfusion was investigated during treadmill walking. Twenty subjects with extensive hyperintensities in the periventricular and deep white matter on T(2)-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRI) were recruited. The ARWMC subjects were classified into gait-disturbed (GD) and non-GD groups according to clinical criteria. All the subjects underwent gait analyses and cerebral perfusion measurements during both gait and rest by using single photon emission computed tomography. The G

Cognitive function and the performance of a secondary, dual task may affect certain aspects of gait, but the relationships between cognitive function and gait are not well understood. To better understand the motor control of gait and the relationship between cognitive function and gait, we studied cognitive function and the effects of different types of dual tasking on the gait of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and controls, contrasting measures of gait automaticity and rhythmicity with other features. Patients with idiopathic PD (n=30; mean age 71.8 year) with moderate disease severi

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) affects over eight million U.S. adults, impairing mobility, quality of life, and increasing fall and cardiovascular risks. PAD reduces lower limb blood flow and contributes to neuromuscular dysfunction, leading to unstable gait. Traditional stability metrics often miss phase-specific changes. Gait Tube Stability (GTS) is a phase-dependent, three-dimensional method that analyzes center of mass (COM) velocity using ellipsoidal variability to detect directional instability. This study examined whether GTS can identify phase-specific gait deficits in P

Gait analysis is a cornerstone of clinical decision-making in cerebral palsy (CP), yet multicenter variability limits comparability and translation. This work reports the creation of a standardized, multicenter gait database and a machine learning (ML) classifier to distinguish gait patterns of CP hemiplegia, CP diplegia, and typically developing group to validate the database. Data is contributed by eight ORITEL motion analysis laboratories (156 sessions, 582 trials) using two systems (Vicon/BTS), with unified nomenclature, unit normalization, and resampling. For classification, 95 sessions (

Functional recovery after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) varies widely among individuals, and traditional assessments often fail to detect subtle changes in real-world walking ability. Wearable sensors offer continuous and objective tracking of gait outside of clinical settings. In this prospective, longitudinal study, thirty-one patients undergoing unilateral TKA wore thigh-mounted accelerometers continuously from 2 weeks before surgery through 90 days postoperatively. We analyzed temporal gait features (stride time and duty factor) and frequency-domain metrics (power of the first five frequen

Innovative technology allows for personalization of stimulation frequency in dual-site deep brain stimulation (DBS), offering promise for challenging symptoms in advanced Parkinson's disease (PD), particularly freezing of gait (FoG). Early results suggest that combining standard subthalamic nucleus (STN) stimulation with substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) stimulation may improve FoG outcomes. However, patient response and the optimal SNr stimulation frequency vary. Our randomized controlled trial studied patients with advanced PD and persistent FoG, while recording gait kinematics through

This study addresses the characterization of normal gait and pathological deviations caused by neurological diseases. We focus on the angular knee kinematics in the sagittal plane and we propose to exploit Hidden Markov Models to build a statistical model of normal gait. Such model provides a log-likelihood score that quantifies gait quality. Hence allowing to assess deviations of pathological cycles from normal gait. Our approach allows a refined characterization of motor impairments of three different patients' groups. In particular, it detects the affected lower limb in Hemiparetic patients

BACKGROUND: Measurement of freezing of gait (FOG) relies on the sensitivity and reliability of tasks to provoke FOG. It is currently unclear which tasks provide the best outcomes and how medication state plays into this.
OBJECTIVE: To establish the sensitivity and test-retest reliability of various FOG-provoking tasks for presence and severity of FOG, with (ON) and without (OFF) dopaminergic medication.
METHODS: FOG-presence and percentage time frozen (% TF) were derived from video annotations of a home-based FOG-provoking protocol performed in OFF and ON. This included: the four meter walk

Stroke is a leading cause of disability, impairing the ability to generate propulsive forces and causing significant lateral gait asymmetry. We aim to improve stroke survivors' gaits by promoting weight-bearing during affected limb stance. External forces can encourage this; e.g., vertical forces can augment the gravitational force requiring higher ground reaction forces, or lateral forces can shift the center of mass over the stance foot, altering the lateral placement of the center of pressure. With our novel design of a mobile Tethered Pelvic Assist Device (mTPAD) paired with the DeepSole s

Introduction: It has been recognized that practicing ballet could strengthen the leg muscles, improve balance, and reduce fall risk. However, few studies have investigated how ballet practice alters a person's gait pattern, and this knowledge gap could present a barrier to designing ballet-based training programs. This study examined dynamic gait stability and spatiotemporal gait parameters among professional ballet dancers during normal level overground walking. Methods: Twenty young adults were recruited: 10 ballet dancers (24.5 ± 4.9 years) and 10 age- and sex-matched non-dancers (22.6 ± 3.

Non-invasive brain stimulation has been of interest as a therapeutic tool to modulate cortical excitability. However, there is little evidence that oscillatory brain stimulation can modulate the cortical control of muscle activities during gait, which can be assessed using coherence analysis of paired surface electromyographic (EMG) recordings. This study aimed to investigate the effects of gait-combined transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at the gait cycle frequency on the cortical control of muscle activities during gait using EMG-EMG coherence analysis. BACKGROUND: Freezing of gait (FOG) is a debilitating feature of Parkinson's disease (PD) for which treatments are limited. To develop neuroprotective strategies, determining whether disease progression is different in phenotypic variants of PD is essential.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if freezers have a faster decline in spatiotemporal gait parameters.
METHODS: Subjects were enrolled in a longitudinal study and assessed every 3- 6 months. Continuous gait in the levodopa ON-state was collected using a gait mat (Protokinetics). The slope of change/year in spatiotemporal gait parameters was calcula

The purpose of this study was to quantify the biomechanical performance of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) in the normal foot (NF), flatfoot (FF), and flatfoot with orthotic insoles (FF + insole) under different gait loads to identify their movement response strategies. Male runners with NF and flexible FF were instructed to walk and run using a rearfoot strike pattern. Subsequently, the FF group underwent the same test again while wearing orthotic insoles. The Qualisys capture system and Kistler force platform were synchronized to collect kinetic and kinematic data. A mixed-design two-way

OBJECTIVES: Freezing of Gait (FOG) is one of the disabling symptoms in patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD). While it is difficult to early detect because of the sporadic occurrence of initial freezing events. Whether the characteristic of gait impairments in PD patients with FOG during the 'interictal' period is different from that in non-FOG patients is still unclear.
METHODS: The gait parameters were measured by wearable inertial sensors. Exploratory factor analysis was used to investigate the inherent structure of diverse univariate gait parameters, with the aim of identifying shared ch

Leg health assessment is a vital component of poultry breeding goals; it includes a range of skeletal disorders and contact dermatitis traits as well as a general assessment of a bird's walking ability in the form of gait score (GS). If trained scorers are used, GS correlates well with more objective walking assessment methods and allows for high throughput data collection from large numbers of individuals. The paper describes for the first time GS heritabilities for broilers. The Aviagen GS system (AGS) consists of an 8-class scale of 10-45 in increments of 5, whereby 10 is the best score and
