Mesenchymal neoplasms of the gallbladder are rare, and most represent sarcomas of various histological types. To our knowledge, only a few patients with multiple Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated smooth muscle tumours of the gallbladder in the setting of immunodeficiency have been reported in the English literature, but no single case of conventional leiomyoma has been well documented to date. A case of gallbladder leiomyoma in a healthy 34-year-old woman is described here. The tumour was found incidentally on a routine ultrasound examination and was removed by simple cholecystectomy. The pa

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the gallbladder are rare and in particular leiomyomas of the gallbladder have been rarely reported, all of them in patients with immune system disorders. This is the first report in Spanish of a 23-year-old female patient with a gallbladder leiomyoma without associated immunodeficiency. The patient lacks a previous history of uterine leiomyoma or any other form of neoplasm. She refers several episodes of epygastralgia. A hydatic cyst led to an initial diagnosis and the gallbladder was removed by means of simple cholecystectomy. The abnormal macroscopic aspect of the sam

Although clear cell carcinomas have been described in numerous anatomic sites, their occurrence in the gallbladder and extrahepatic bile ducts (EHBD) is practically unknown. We report 10 such cases. Seven arose in the gallbladder and three in the EHBD; all patients with gallbladder tumors were females with cholelithiasis whose ages ranged from 56 to 68 years. Patients with EHBD tumors were younger (38 and 40 years of age) and had extrahepatic biliary obstruction and abdominal pain. Two patients with gallbladder carcinomas had elevated serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels, and another wi

Intracholecystic papillary neoplasms (ICPN) are a rare type of gallbladder papillary neoplasms. They demonstrate more complex morphological and immunohistochemical features than intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms or intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct. Moreover, gallbladder tumors sometimes show an irregular appearance owing to Rokitansky-Aschoff sinus (RAS) involvement. Herein, we report a case of ICPN that mimicked a submucosal tumor. An 81-year-old man presented to the emergency department of our hospital with right hypochondralgia. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a 15

Biliary malignancies include those arising from the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts as well as the gallbladder and hepatopancreatic ampulla of Vater. The majority of intrahepatic and extrahepatic malignancies are cholangiocarcinomas (CCAs). They arise owing to a complex interplay between the patient-specific genetic background and multiple risk factors and may occur in the liver (intrahepatic CCA), hilum (perihilar CCA), or extrahepatic bile ducts (distal CCA). Biliary-type adenocarcinoma constitutes the most common histologic type of ampullary and gallbladder malignancies. Its progno

Neoplasms arising in the gallbladder, bile ducts, and ampulla of Vater pose a significant clinical challenge. Although benign neoplasms may be encountered, the majority of these tumors are malignant. There are a number of similarities among tumors at these sites including their clinical presentation which may include biliary obstruction. Furthermore, these tumors are often asymptomatic early in their course and frequently present at an advanced stage of disease, precluding potentially curative resection. This article focuses on the diagnosis, staging, and operative management of gallbladder, b

Benign tumor and pseudotumor of the gallbladder are infrequently reported in our country. In this paper, 5 patients with benign tumor (3 tubular adenoma, 1 leiomyoma and 1 fibroma) and 35 pseudotumor (26 cholesterol polyps and 9 inflammatory polyps) of the gallbladder are presented. Most patients presented a typical clinical manifestation of chronic cholecystitis. Oral cholecystography gave a lower detection rate. B-ultrasonography was able to show the presence of neoplasm in the gallbladder (37/40). Correct diagnosis was established by operation and pathology. In this series, all patients wer

The patient is a 41-year-old woman. She had been regularly visiting our hospital for follow-up of primary biliary cirrhosis and gallbladder polyps, but was referred to the Department of Surgery for surgery because the polyps tended to enlarge in size. Abdominal CT showed a 10 mm-sized polyp with early contrast in the body of the gallbladder, and T2-weighted abdominal MRI showed a signal defect in the gallbladder lumen consistent with a polyp, but a qualitative diagnosis was difficult. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The macroscopic findings o

Extramedullary myeloma (EMM) is an infrequent but well-established manifestation of multiple myeloma (MM), defined as a soft tissue plasma cell neoplasm without bone marrow involvement. Gallbladder involvement in EMM, however, is a very rare occurrence, with only 8 cases found in the English medical literature. Here, we present a case of an older adult male with a gallbladder mass in the presence of increasing serum kappa light chains after a normal bone marrow biopsy confirmed the complete remission of a previous MM diagnosis. Histopathologic evaluation of a biopsied sample confirmed the mass

Primary small cell neuroendocrine carcinomas are extremely rare heterogeneous neoplasms. We present 68 Ga-FAPI (fibroblast activation protein inhibitor) PET/CT findings of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the gallbladder in a 57-year-old woman. This rare gallbladder small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma demonstrated intense tracer uptake on 68 Ga-FAPI PET/CT. This demonstrates the potential value of 68 Ga-FAPI PET/CT for evaluation of gallbladder small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct is now considered to be a specific type of bile duct tumor. The progenitor cells of intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct are located in the peribiliary gland, which are distributed along the intrahepatic bile duct, extrahepatic bile duct, and gallbladder; therefore, these neoplasms could arise in any area. The mainstay of treatment for patients with intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct is complete surgical resection. Neoplasms involving both lobes of the liver can only be treated with liver transplant. There have been 11 re

OBJECTIVE: After (90)Y-microsphere radioembolization for unresectable hepatic neoplasms, the nearby gallbladder is susceptible to radiation-induced cholecystitis, an uncommon complication. The purpose of this study was to characterize the imaging findings after (90)Y radioembolization of the gallbladder and to assess the incidence of clinically significant radiation-induced cholecystitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for cholecystectomy after (90)Y treatment of 133 consecutively registered patients (76 men, 57 women; average age, 65 years). Thirty-four

Intracholecystic papillary neoplasm and cholecystocolonic fistula are both relatively rare diseases. Here, we report a case of a preoperative intracholecystic papillary neoplasm associated with invasive carcinoma and a transverse colonic fistula of the gallbladder. A 79-year-old female patient presented to our hospital with persistent right upper quadrant pain for several months and was suspected to have intracholecystic papillary neoplasm associated with an invasive carcinoma by computed tomography and endoscopic ultrasound. A gallbladder tumor biopsy was pathologically diagnosed as intrachol

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: More needs to be understood concerning the natural progression and visual attributes of intracholecystic papillary neoplasm. Its longevity, especially the rate at which it transitions from benign to malignant growths, remains ambiguous. Consequently, it is imperative to elucidate the intrinsic progression of this precancerous lesion in the gallbladder.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old North African woman arrived at the emergency department with abdominal pain, anorexia, and weight loss. The patient's physical examination showed favourable results for abdominal pai

Intracholecystic papillary-tubular neoplasm (ICPN) is a preinvasive neoplasm arising from the gallbladder mucosa, with a better prognosis than conventional gallbladder carcinoma; however, accurate preoperative differentiation based solely on imaging remains challenging. When complicated by infection, inflammatory changes often mimic tumor invasion, making it difficult to accurately evaluate the tumor extent. We report the case of an 83-year-old male with a liver abscess and suspected advanced gallbladder carcinoma. Initial imaging suggested invasion of the liver and right hepatic artery, and t

A gallbladder neuroendocrine neoplasm (GB-NEN) is a unique heterogeneous neoplasm, originating from neuroendocrine cells and able to secrete peptides as its neurotransmitter. Among all the neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), the GB-NEN prevalence is 0.5%, which accounts for ~2.1% of all gallbladder tumors. The current study aimed to present an up-to-date review of the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of NETs of the gallbladder. A systematic literature search was performed in order to identify all relevant studies published. Thus far, the etiology and pathogenesis of GB-NEN remains unclear.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare chronic inflammatory condition mainly of the large bile ducts, affecting predominantly young men, and is associated with the presence of inflammatory bowel disease. There is no known cure for PSC, which progresses to cirrhosis or death over 10-20 years. Hepatobiliary malignancy, especially cholangiocarcinoma, is a feared complication associated with poor overall survival. Screening and surveillance appear to improve overall outcomes. To capture as many relevant studies, broad search criteria were employed within the PubMed database. Given the high

Intracholecystic papillary neoplasm (ICPN) is a grossly visible, mass-forming, noninvasive epithelial neoplasm arising from the mucosa and projecting into the lumen of the gallbladder. ICPN is a lesser-known tumor of the gallbladder lining, which although has a better prognosis compared to gallbladder adenocarcinoma carries the potential for metastatic transformation with spread to other organs. ICPN is found incidentally on imaging or during postop histological evaluation. However, we present a unique case of ICPN that was incidentally diagnosed in a 72-year-old Eastern European woman followi

Intracholecystic papillary neoplasm (ICPN) is a rare preinvasive neoplasm of the gallbladder. The lesion typically appears as a polypoid lesion or gallbladder wall thickening. We report a case involving a 40-year-old man with an ICPN that lacked typical polypoid lesions and was difficult to differentiate from adenomyomatosis because of the presence of intramural cysts. Initial contrast-enhanced computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed edematous gallbladder wall thickening. The lumen was constricted and surrounded by a cluster of small cysts that were suspected to be Rokitansky

Biliary tract neoplasms comprise a heterogeneous group of malignancies associated with diagnostic complexity, and high morbidity and mortality. Hence, timely diagnosis, accurate staging, and effective therapeutic modalities are crucial to patient outcomes. Endoscopy plays is crucial in the multidisciplinary management of biliary neoplasms including cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder carcinoma, ampullary neoplasms, and intraductal papillary neoplasms of the bile duct. Diagnostically, endoscopy allows for fluoroscopic mapping, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography-based tissue acquisition,
