The relationship between Intolerance of Uncertainty and conditioned fear acquisition: Evidence from a large sample.

Despite being considered a valid model for the etiology of anxiety disorders, the fear conditioning paradigm does not always show clear correlations with anxious personality traits that constitute risk factors for the development of anxiety disorders. This may in part due to error variance and the fact that fear conditioning studies are typically underpowered to investigate inter-individual differences. In the current study, we focus on the relationship between conditioned fear acquisition and Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU). In a re-analysis of a large previous study (N = 120), which was cond

Effect of skin conductivity on the electric field induced by transcranial stimulation techniques in different head models.

This study aims at quantifying the effect that using different skin conductivity values has on the estimation of the electric (E)-field distribution induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the brain of two anatomical models. The induced E-field was calculated with numerical simulations inside MIDA and Duke models, assigning to the skin a conductivity value estimated from a multi-layered skin model and three values taken from literature. The effect of skin conductivity variations on the local E-field induced by tDCS in the brain w

Fear-learning deficits in subjects with fibromyalgia syndrome?

BACKGROUND: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is frequently associated with psychiatric conditions, particularly anxiety. Deficits in contingency learning during fear conditioning have been hypothesized to increase anxiety and, consequently, pain sensation in susceptible individuals. The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between contingency learning and pain experience in subjects with FMS and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: Fourteen female FMS subjects, 14 age-matched female RA subjects and 14 age-matched female healthy controls (HCs) were included in a fear-conditioning exper

Components of working memory and somatic markers in decision making.

According to Damasio's somatic marker hypothesis, affective reactions ordinarily guide and simplify decision making. In an earlier study, we used a modified version of the gambling task developed by Bechara and colleagues so that we could explore the relations among decision making, working memory (WM) load, and formation of somatic markers. This prior work found that an increased WM load produced by secondary tasks interfered with the development of somatic markers and led to poorer gambling task performance. In the present study, we tested whether secondary tasks affect the executive functio

Preserved sympathetic skin response at the distal phalanx in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the viability of sympathetic sudomotor fibers in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). METHODS: We recorded sympathetic skin response (SSR) with a multichannel recording system. Forty-four patients with CTS (51 hands), 7 patients (7 hands) with asymptomatic median mononeuropathy at the wrist (MMW), and 20 normal subjects (20 hands) were studied. We classified the patients into 4 grades of increasing severity. RESULTS: In the hands of normal subjects, SSR was evoked easily at all recorded sites. SSR at the wrist in patients with asymptomatic MMW decreased in amplitude. SSR was ma

Electrodermal signatures of stress during tactical law enforcement training.

Law enforcement tactical training places sustained cognitive and emotional demands on recruits, making stress regulation a critical determinant of learning and performance. This study examined EDA as an objective index of stress regulation during standardized law enforcement scenarios. Objectives were to 1) predict individual change in tactical performance from electrodermal dynamics, 2) test whether a breathing-based intervention produces different pre- to post-physiological change than standard training across the full scenario periods, and 3) quantify peri-threat EDA dynamics during threat

Infra-slow body-surface potentials show a group-level association with thyroid cancer.

Thyroid cancer is a common malignancy with broad systemic endocrine and metabolic effects (Hammond et al., 2024). Regarding diagnostics, if infra-slow body-surface potential (BSP) features reflect a systemic state, then this type of cancer is a reasonable clinical test case. Prior electrodermal work has focused on faster transients above 0.5 Hz (Boucsein, 2012; Posada-Quintero and Chon, 2020), and task-state skin potential abnormalities have been shown to distinguish mood disorders from healthy controls (Lyu et al., 2024). We concentrated on an infra-slow band from 0.025 to 0.2 Hz, called Band

Characterizing sweating problems in multiple sclerosis: insights from QSART, SUDOSCAN, and COMPASS-31: Sweating Problems in Multiple Sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize sweating issues in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) using the Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test (QSART) and SUDOSCAN. METHODS: In 75 pwMS, sweating symptoms were evaluated using the Composite Autonomic Symptom Score (COMPASS-31). Sweating function was assessed with QSART and SUDOSCAN. RESULTS: Symptomatic sweating problems were observed in 22 (29.3 %) pwMS. Pathological results of the QSART (sudomotor index (SI) >0) were identified in 13 (17.3 %) pwMS, while SUDOSCAN results showed pathology in 8 (10.7 %) pwMS. We found a positive correlation between the

Design and Evaluation of Deep Learning Models for Continuous Acute Pain Detection Based on Phasic Electrodermal Activity.

The current method for assessing pain in clinical practice is subjective and relies on self-reported scales. An objective and accurate method of pain assessment is needed for physicians to prescribe the proper medication dosage, which could reduce addiction to opioids. Hence, many works have used electrodermal activity (EDA) as a suitable signal for detecting pain. Previous studies have used machine learning and deep learning to detect pain responses, but none have used a sequence-to-sequence deep learning approach to continuously detect acute pain from EDA signals, as well as accurate detecti

Better safe than sorry?-On the influence of learned safety on pain perception.

The experience of threat was found to result-mostly-in increased pain, however it is still unclear whether the exact opposite, namely the feeling of safety may lead to a reduction of pain. To test this hypothesis, we conducted two between-subject experiments (N = 94; N = 87), investigating whether learned safety relative to a neutral control condition can reduce pain, while threat should lead to increased pain compared to a neutral condition. Therefore, participants first underwent either threat or safety conditioning, before entering an identical test phase, where the previously conditioned t

Electrodermal activity in bipolar disorder: Differences between mood episodes and clinical remission using a wearable device in a real-world clinical setting.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) lacks objective measures for illness activity and treatment response. Electrodermal activity (EDA) is a quantitative measure of autonomic function, which is altered in manic and depressive episodes. We aimed to explore differences in EDA (1) inter-individually: between patients with BD on acute mood episodes, euthymic states and healthy controls (HC), and (2) intra-individually: longitudinally within patients during acute mood episodes of BD and after clinical remission. METHODS: A longitudinal observational study. EDA was recorded using a research-grade wear

Oscillatory brain activity associated with skin conductance responses in the context of risk.

Understanding the neural correlates of risk-sensitive skin conductance responses can provide insights into their connection to emotional and cognitive processes. To provide insights into this connection, we studied the cortical correlates of risk-sensitive skin conductance peaks using electroencephalography. Fluctuations in skin conductance responses were elicited while participants played a threat-of-shock card game. Precise temporal information about skin conductance peaks was obtained by applying continuous decomposition analysis on raw electrodermal signals. Shortly preceding skin conducta

Comparison between two models of experimental anxiety in healthy volunteers and panic disorder patients.

To further investigate the role of serotonin (5-HT) in anxiety, two tests were used in human subjects. The first was the conditioning of skin conductance response (CSCR) that associates a tone to a loud noise. The second was simulated public speaking (SPS), which is believed to represent unconditioned fear. In healthy volunteers the 5-HT(2A) receptor blocker and 5-HT reuptake inhibitor nefazodone reduced subjective anxiety and the number of spontaneous fluctuations of skin conductance during CSCR, but enhanced anxiety induced by SPS. Opposite effects had been reported with the 5-HT releasing a

Psychophysiological responses of borderline hypertensives in two experimental situations.

Given the contradictory reports concerning psychophysiological reactivity of hypertensives this issue was reexamined. In contrast to the large majority of studies, the hypertensive sample should not be made up of patients in medical care and the control group should be comparable in all relevant aspects other than blood pressure. Twelve male subjects with blood pressure values in the borderline range and 12 normotensive controls were recruited from a blood donation program. Experiments consisted of two parts with baseline, stress and follow-up. Stressors were a short distressing movie and ment

Effects of induced hyperventilation on electrodermal response habituation to agoraphobia-relevant stimuli.

The role of hyperventilation in the aetiology of anxiety disorders was investigated in an analogue study. It was hypothesised that induced hyperventilation would alter subsequent subjective and physiological responses to visually presented agoraphobic material. Three groups (N = 16) of students were used and each was divided into two sub-groups which were presented with slides of either potentially agoraphobic or neutral content. During the first phase of the experiment, subjects were exposed to 10 slides whilst their breathing rate was manipulated. Group FB was instructed to hyperventilate by

Provoked anxiety as a treatment of exhibitionism.

A treatment for male genital exposure (exhibitionism) has been given successfully to 15 persons who have previously been resistant to change. The procedure involves the subject undressing before a mixed sex audience, followed by video-taping and subsequent replay to the patient. During the period of nakedness the subject describes in detail the events, his expectations and attitudes, and those attributed to his victim during exposure. The success of the treatment appears to depend on the profound anxiety induced. During the phase of greatly increased anxiety, cognitive changes previously resis
