Thyroid cancer is the most common type of endocrine-related cancer and the most common cancer in young women. Currently, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and computed tomography (CT) are used with radioiodine scintigraphy to evaluate patients with thyroid cancer. OBJECTIVE: In acute respiratory failure, increased cardiac output (Qt) increases shunt (Qs/Qt). We have tested if this is caused by: 1) a redistribution of blood flow towards edematous regions, or 2) a decrease of regional ventilation in the edematous region.
DESIGN: Oleic acid edema was induced in the left lower lobe (LLL) of 11 pigs. Qt was varied with bleeding and infusion of blood and dextran. Blood flow to the LLL was measured at low and high Qt with electromagnetic low probes in 6 animals and with a gamma camera in 5. In the gamma camera pigs regional ventilation was also measured.

A retrospective analysis of 143 studies of abdominal scintigraphy with technetium-99m pertechnetate for the diagnosis of ectopic gastric mucosa (usually located in Meckel diverticulum) was undertaken. Twenty-nine patients with symptomatic segmental renal disorders were studied by regional renography. Twenty-three patients had duplex kidneys and 6 had other segmental disease. A method to measure the detector-to-object distance from the images obtained with stationary high-spatial-resolution gamma-ray cameras for in vivo studies has been developed. Scintimammography, or single gamma nuclear imaging of the breast, has shown promise as a way of characterizing certain biological properties of suspicious breast masses. Conventional scintimammography, performed using large clinical gamma cameras and prone patient positioning suffers from several drawbacks including poor sensitivity for small (> 1 cm) lesions and no reliable method for correlating scintigraphic findings with those of other imaging modalities. We injected technetium-labeled albumin (at a concentration similar to that of the pleural fluid) in the costal region of anesthetized dogs (n = 13) either breathing spontaneously or apneic. PURPOSE: Cardiac 123I-MIBG image interpretation is affected by population differences and technical factors. We recruited older adults without cognitive decline and compared their cardiac MIBG uptake with results from the literature.
METHODS: Phantom calibration confirmed that cardiac uptake results from Japan could be applied to our center. We recruited 31 controls, 17 individuals with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and 15 with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Images were acquired 20 minutes and four hours after injection using Siemens cameras with medium-energy low-penetration (MELP) collimators.

Hepato-biliary sequential scans are a diagnostic nuclear medicine procedure which might be applied widely with new radiopharmaceuticals and high solution gamma cameras. Typical sequential scans of polycystic liver disease (2 cases) are demonstrated for the first time. Valuable diagnostic information is obtained by usage of all technical facilities to differentiate other diseases, for instance mistaken parenchymal liver changes due to cystic renal disease or metastatic liver disease.
