BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social communication difficulties, restricted and repetitive behaviors, and sensory atypicalities. Its pathophysiology remains poorly understood, and no diagnostic biomarker is currently available. However, studies support the hypothesis of an imbalance in the neuronal excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance. Beta and gamma oscillatory powers are described in the literature as indirect electrophysiological features reflecting network dynamics related to this balance. This study takes a dimensional approach to investigate whether altera

Recent findings have shown the influential role of theta-gamma cross-frequency coupling in the maintenance of items in working memory (WM). Specifically, it has been proposed that individual items are represented within gamma oscillations that are nested within slower theta waves. Thus, longer theta cycles would theoretically allow the retention of more items. On the basis of this theory, the present preregistered study aimed to test whether slowing theta rhythms via 4 Hz of transcranial alternating current stimulation over the frontoparietal network improves WM capacity. Given the potential r

Theta and gamma oscillations have been linked to episodic memory processes in various studies. Both oscillations seem to be vital for processes guided by the medial temporal lobe, such as the retrieval of information from memory. While theta oscillations increase with successful memory, it is unclear what the unique contribution of theta is to various subcomponents of memory. On the other hand, memory-related gamma oscillations have been mainly reported in the hippocampus, leaving the role of neocortical gamma in memory underexplored. In this study, we investigated how unique variability in me

BACKGROUND: Re-emergent tremor is characterized as a continuation of resting tremor and is often highly therapy refractory. This study examines variations in brain activity and oscillatory responses between resting and re-emergent tremors in Parkinson's disease.
METHODS: Forty patients with Parkinson's disease (25 males, mean age, 66.78 ± 5.03 years) and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were included in the study. Electroencephalogram and electromyography signals were simultaneously recorded during resting and re-emergent tremors in levodopa on and off states for patients and mimicked

Selective attention is reflected neurally in changes in the power of posterior neural oscillations in the alpha (8-12 Hz) and gamma (40-100 Hz) bands. Although a neural mechanism that allows relevant information to be selectively processed has its advantages, it may lead to lucrative or dangerous information going unnoticed. Neural systems are also in place for processing rewarding and punishing information. Here, we examine the interaction between selective attention (left vs. right) and stimulus's learned value associations (neutral, punished, or rewarded) and how they compete for control of

Theta-phase gamma-amplitude coupling (TGC) was used as an evidence-based tool to reflect the dysfunctional cortico-thalamic interaction in patients with schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic utility of TGC. The subjects included 90 patients with schizophrenia and 90 healthy controls. We compared the TGC results between the groups using an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to adjust for age and sex and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analyses to examine the discrimination ability of delta to gamma frequency bands and TGC. Patients with schizophren

OBJECTIVE: EEG changes in schizophrenic patients are caused by a multitude of factors related to clinical heterogeneity of the disease, current state of patients, and conducted therapy. EEG spectral analysis remains an actual methodical approach for the investigation of the neurophysiological mechanisms of the disease. The goal of the investigation was the study of frequency and regional EEG correlating with the intensity of productive and negative disorders.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Models of summary prevalence of positive/negative disorders and evidence of concrete clinical indices of the PANS

Neurons within a neuronal network can be grouped by bottom-up and top-down influences using synchrony in neuronal oscillations. This creates the representation of perceptual objects from sensory features. Oscillatory activity can be differentiated into stimulus-phase-locked (evoked) and non-phase-locked (induced). The former is mainly determined by sensory input, the latter by higher-level (cortical) processing. Effects of auditory deprivation on cortical oscillations have been studied in congenitally deaf cats (CDCs) using cochlear implant (CI) stimulation. CI-induced alpha, beta, and gamma a

We studied mechanisms for cortical gamma-band activity in the cerebral cortex and identified neurobiological factors that affect such activity. This was done by analyzing the behavior of a previously developed, data-driven, large-scale network model that simulated many visual functions of monkey V1 cortex (Chariker et al., 2016). Gamma activity was an emergent property of the model. The model's gamma activity, like that of the real cortex, was (1) episodic, (2) variable in frequency and phase, and (3) graded in power with stimulus variables like orientation. The spike firing of the model's neu

Neural oscillations originate predominantly from interacting cortical neurons and consequently reflect aspects of cortical information processing. However, their functional role is not yet fully understood and their interpretation is debatable. Amplitude modulations (AMs) in alpha (8-12 Hz), beta (13-30 Hz), and high gamma (70-150 Hz) band in invasive electrocorticogram (ECoG) and non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) signals change with behavior. Alpha and beta band AMs are typically suppressed (desynchronized) during motor behavior, while high gamma AMs highly correlate with the behavior.

Gait impairments remain a major therapeutic challenge in Parkinson's disease (PD). Apomorphine is gaining renewed clinical attention with the expanding use of pump infusion systems. Yet the specific role of apomorphine on the neural regulation of gait has remained poorly characterized, limiting its targeted use for symptom-specific therapy in PD. Here, we examined the neurobehavioral effects of apomorphine on runway locomotion in the unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) rat model. Therapeutic drug doses significantly increased total walking distance, related to reduced akinesia and prolonged

Stimulating lifestyles have powerful effects on cognitive abilities, especially when they are experienced early in life. Cognitive therapies are widely used to improve cognitive impairment due to intellectual disability, aging, and neurodegeneration, however the underlying neural mechanisms are poorly understood. We investigated the neural correlates of memory amelioration produced by postnatal environmental enrichment (EE) in diploid mice and the Ts65Dn mouse model of Down syndrome (trisomy 21). We recorded neural activities in brain structures key for memory processing, the hippocampus and t

Synchronization in neural systems plays an important role in many brain functions. Synchronization in the gamma frequency band (30-100 Hz) is involved in a variety of cognitive phenomena; abnormalities of the gamma synchronization are found in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder. Frequently, the strength of synchronization is not high, and synchronization is intermittent even on short time scales (few cycles of oscillations). That is, the network exhibits intervals of synchronization followed by intervals of desynchronization. Neural circuit dynamics may show different distributions of

1. The effects of Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom and its most important toxin (toxin gamma) were investigated on isolated guinea-pig hearts, perfused with Locke solution, by the Langendorff's method. 2. The cardiac contraction, the coronary flow and the electrocardiogram (ECG) were simultaneously recorded. 3. Bolus injections of 25, 50 or 100 micrograms of scorpion venom and 2.5, 5 or 10 micrograms of toxin gamma in the heart evoked complex effects which were divided into 3 phases: an initial phase (tachycardia or bradycardia associated with an increase in contractile force), an intermediate

BACKGROUND: Meta-analyses show that percentages of non-Cp-Cu-copper that is not bound to ceruloplasmin (also known as 'free' copper)-in serum are higher in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Genetic heterogeneity in AD patients stratified on the basis of non-Cp-Cu cut-off sustains the existence of a copper AD metabolic subtype. Non-Cp-Cu abnormalities correlated with alterations of electroencephalographic rhythms (EEG).
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether an EEG-derived brain cortical rhythm's heterogeneity between two AD groups stratified on the basis of a copper marker.
METHOD: We ass

The pulmonary haemodynamics and thyroid hormone level were investigated in 21 patients with EKS-222 (VVI) pacemaker, implanted after successful transvenous electrical endocardial His-bundle fulguration (TEF). Triiodthyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) were determined by radioimmunoassay, pulmonary circulation parameters were estimated by means of radiocardiography and radionuclide ventriculography using an Omega 500 gamma-camera and a "Scintron MX" computer system. Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) during VVI pacing had higher level of T3 and T4 and better pulmonary circulation parameters th

An isolated brainstem-lung preparation of the newborn rat was developed for a pharmacological study on the respiratory reflexes in vitro. Spontaneous periodic depolarizations of the ventral roots (C4-C5) were observed at a frequency of 5-15/min and regarded as the respiratory activity. This activity was transiently inhibited when the lungs were inflated by gas pressure applied to the trachea. The inhibitory response of the respiratory rhythm was markedly depressed by the application of bicuculline or strychnine to the brainstem. These results suggest that gamma-aminobutyric acid and/or glycine

Brain oscillations underlie the function of our brains, dictating how we both think and react to the world around us. The synchronous activity of neurons generates these rhythms, which allow different parts of the brain to communicate and orchestrate responses to internal and external stimuli. Perturbations of cognitive rhythms and the underlying oscillator neurons that synchronize different parts of the brain contribute to the pathophysiology of diseases including Alzheimer's disease, (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), epilepsy and other diseases of rhythm that have been studied extensively by G

Circadian rhythms of GABA turnover rate in cerebral cortex, preoptic area-medial basal hypothalamus (PMBH), cerebellum, and pineal gland were examined in Syrian hamsters kept for 3 months under either long (14 h of light/day) or short days (10 h of light/day). In vivo GABA turnover rate was measured by the increase of GABA levels following inhibition of GABA-transaminase by gamma-acetylenic GABA. Under long photoperiods, a significant rhythm of GABA turnover was detected in the four areas studied (cerebral cortex, PMBH, cerebellum, and pineal gland), with maxima at night. A Cosinor analysis in
