Basal ganglia calcification in Kearns-Sayre syndrome.

The Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS) appears to be a distinctive disorder characterized by progressive external ophthalmoplegia, pigmentary degeneration of the retina, heart block, and elevated CSF protein levels. Recent reports have suggested that abnormalities of muscle mitochondria may also be a consistent finding in KSS. We recently examined a patient with KSS whose skeletal muscle contained abnormal mitochondria. In addition, a computerized tomographic scan of the head showed cerebellar and brain stem atrophy, as well as calcification in the region of the basal ganglia.

Herpes Simplex Virus 1 Reactivates from Autonomic Ciliary Ganglia Independently from Sensory Trigeminal Ganglia To Cause Recurrent Ocular Disease.

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) and HSV-2 establish latency in sensory and autonomic neurons after ocular or genital infection, but their recurrence patterns differ. HSV-1 reactivates from latency to cause recurrent orofacial disease, and while HSV-1 also causes genital lesions, HSV-2 recurs more efficiently in the genital region and rarely causes ocular disease. The mechanisms regulating these anatomical preferences are unclear. To determine whether differences in latent infection and reactivation in autonomic ganglia contribute to differences in HSV-1 and HSV-2 anatomical preferences for recu

Evidence of substance P immunoreactive neurons in dorsal root ganglia and vagal ganglia projecting to the guinea pig pylorus.

The origin of extrinsic substance P fibers in the guinea pig pyloric wall was investigated by combining retrograde axonal tracing and indirect immunofluorescence techniques. After injection of Fast Blue into the pyloric wall labeled cells were found in the T7-T9 dorsal root ganglia and the nodose and jugular ganglia. About 60% of the labeled cells in the dorsal root ganglia contained substance P-like immunoreactivity. After local application of colchicine, a few substance P positive cells were observed in the nodose and jugular ganglia, some of which also contained Fast Blue.

Long-term culturing of porcine nodose ganglia.

BACKGROUND: Neuronal cell cultures are widely used in the field of neuroscience. Cell dissociation allows for the isolation of a desired cell type, yet the neuronal complexity that distinguishes the nervous system is often lost as a result. Thus, culturing neural tissues in ex vivo format provides a physiological context that more closely resembles the in vivo environment. NEW METHOD: We developed a simple method to culture nodose ganglia neurons from neonatal pigs long-term in ex vivo format using an in-house media formulation derived from commercially available components. RESULTS: Ganglia

Polymicrogyria with dysmorphic basal ganglia? Think tubulin!

Dominant mutations in TUBB2B have been reported in patients with polymicrogyria. We further explore the phenotype associated with mutations in TUBB2B. Twenty patients with polymicrogyria (five unilateral) were tested for mutations in TUBB2B by Sanger sequencing. We identified two novel de novo mutations, c.743C>T (p.Ala248Val) and c.1139G>T (p.Arg380Leu) in exon 4 of TUBB2B in three unrelated families. Brain magnetic resonance images showed polymicrogyria involving predominantly the perisylvian regions. In addition, there was a dysmorphic appearance of the basal ganglia, thin corpus callosum,

Psychosis revealing familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification.

We describe the case of a 39-year-old woman presenting with auditory hallucinations and delusions responsive to antipsychotic drugs. Computerized tomography scans revealed basal ganglia calcifications in the proband and in her two asymptomatic parents. Extensive etiological clinicobiological assessment allowed us to exclude known causes of brain calcifications and diagnose familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification (IBGC). Neurological symptoms associated with psychiatric symptoms are common in IBGC. Nevertheless, purely psychiatric presentations, as demonstrated by the present case, are

Basal ganglia lesions in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

The parieto-occipital region of the brain is the most frequently and severely affected in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The basal ganglia, cerebellum and corpus callosum are less commonly involved. We describe a patient with SSPE confirmed by neuropathology based on brain magnetic resonance imaging showing extensive basal ganglia involvement and no significant involvement of other cortical structures. Though rarely described in SSPE, clinicians should be aware of this involvement. SSPE should be kept in mind when changes in basal ganglia signal are seen on brain magnetic resonanc

Hypercellular/heterotopic ganglia in omphalomesenteric duct remnants.

Omphalomesenteric duct remnants (ODR) including Meckel diverticula often present with symptoms of bowel obstruction. Their histologic features are varied and include heterotopic gastrointestinal mucosa and/or pancreatic tissue within the wall. Abnormalities of the submucosal plexus of Meissner, however, have not been documented in the literature. Thus, we have examined a number of ODR for evidence of ganglion abnormalities. Fifty-three cases of ODR were retrieved from our archives, along with 25 nonduodenal small bowel control specimens obtained from autopsies of patients without clinical or p

[Neural-immune interactions in dorsal root ganglia].

Interleukin-1 (IL-1) beta is a proinflammatory cytokine that is produced by a large variety of cells, including macrophages, fibroblasts, mesangial cells and endothelial cells, and is believed to play important roles in the inflammatory responses, including hyperalgesia. Hyperalgesia is characterized by intensified pain with a reduced threshold to somatic stimulation, and it is involved in chronic inflammatory disease. Substance P (SP), an undecapeptide, has been shown to relay noxious signals as a neurotransmitter in primary afferent neurons. Thus it is expected that the change of neuropeptid

Basal ganglia germinoma with progressive cerebral hemiatrophy.

The authors describe a 7-year-old Chinese-American female with a germinoma of the basal ganglia who presented with progressive hemiparesis and cerebral hemiatrophy. The additional finding of markedly elevated antiphospholipid antibodies suggests the possibility of an autoimmune pathogenesis for the progressive cerebral atrophy, as well as the later development of cognitive decline, tics, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors.

Basal ganglia calcification in pseudohypoparathyroidism type II.

The case history of a patient with basal ganglia calcifications found by computerised tomography is presented. Calcium and phosphorus metabolism showed a pattern suggesting lack of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Further studies revealed increased endogenous PTH levels and urinary cAMP excretion. However, endogenous and exogenous PTH could not elicit the cAMP-mediated phosphaturic response, indicating pseudohypoparathyroidism type II. The responses of prolactin to TRH and chlorpromazine was impaired. Basal ganglia calcification in pseudohypoparathyroidism type II may represent the only somatic abno

Emergence of lesions outside of the basal ganglia and irreversible damage to the basal ganglia with severe β-ketothiolase deficiency: A case report.

BACKGROUND: β-ketothiolase deficiency (β-KTD) is an inherited disease, and insufficient attention has been paid to imageology due to its lower morbidity. Therefore, few lesions outside the basal ganglia have been found before, and the persistent pathological changes have rarely been reported. CASE SUMMARY: A 10-mo-old Chinese female patient with a free previous medical history but with poor physical and athletic development had received the haemophilus influenzae vaccine and then developed a low fever 2 d prior. She was initially diagnosed with severe brain injury, central respiratory failure

Region- and stage-specific patterns of melanocortin receptor ontogeny in rat central nervous system, cranial nerve ganglia and sympathetic ganglia.

Observations on developmental actions of melanotropic peptides in nervous system have been difficult to interpret in the absence of data on receptor ontogeny. We investigated binding of [125I]Nle4,D-Phe7-alpha-MSH ([125I]NDP) in developing Long Evans rats from gestational day (E) 13 by quantitative autoradiography. Regional [125I]NDP binding characteristics were assessed by competition experiments in early postnatal brain. The study revealed region- and stage-specific, often transient ontogenetic patterns. Sympathetic ganglia exhibit high [125I]NDP binding from E13, with a peak in superior cer

Dissection and Isolation of Mouse Dorsal Root Ganglia.

Dorsal root ganglia (DRG), which contain the cell bodies of primary sensory neurons, serve as critical relay structures for the transmission of sensory signals from peripheral tissues to the spinal cord. They play essential roles in studies of pain, nerve injury, and neurodegenerative diseases. The acquisition of intact DRG tissue is crucial for investigating the functional properties, molecular expression, and pathological alterations of sensory neurons. However, due to their small size and deep location within the vertebral canal, accurate identification and isolation of DRG present signific

Temporal Information Processing in the Cerebellum and Basal Ganglia.

Temporal information processing in the range of a few hundred milliseconds to seconds involves the cerebellum and basal ganglia. In this chapter, we present recent studies on nonhuman primates. In the studies presented in the first half of the chapter, monkeys were trained to make eye movements when a certain amount of time had elapsed since the onset of the visual cue (time production task). The animals had to report time lapses ranging from several hundred milliseconds to a few seconds based on the color of the fixation point. In this task, the saccade latency varied with the time length to

Networking brainstem and basal ganglia circuits for movement.

The execution and learning of diverse movements involve neuronal networks distributed throughout the nervous system. The brainstem and basal ganglia are key for processing motor information. Both harbour functionally specialized populations stratified on the basis of axonal projections, synaptic inputs and gene expression, revealing a correspondence between circuit anatomy and function at a high level of granularity. Neuronal populations within both structures form multistep processing chains dedicated to the execution of specific movements; however, the connectivity and communication between

Diversity of satellite glia in sympathetic and sensory ganglia.

Satellite glia are the major glial type found in sympathetic and sensory ganglia in the peripheral nervous system, and specifically, contact neuronal cell bodies. Sympathetic and sensory neurons differ in morphological, molecular, and electrophysiological properties. However, the molecular diversity of the associated satellite glial cells remains unclear. Here, using single-cell RNA sequencing analysis, we identify five different populations of satellite glia from sympathetic and sensory ganglia. We define three shared populations of satellite glia enriched in immune-response genes, immediate-

Morphological Abnormalities in the Basal Ganglia of Dystonia Patients.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiology of dystonia is poorly understood. As opposed to secondary forms of dystonia, primary dystonia has long been believed to lack any neuroanatomical substrate. During trajectory planning for DBS, however, conspicuous T2-hyperinstensive signal alterations (SA) were registered within the target region, even in young patients, where ischemia is rare. METHODS: Fifty MRIs of primary dystonia patients scheduled for DBS were analyzed. Total basal ganglia (BG) volumes, as well as proportionate SA volumes, were measured and compared to 50 age-matched control patients. RESUL
