A new hemiuroidean species, Genarchella pichileufuensis n. sp. (Derogenidae: Halipeginae), was found in the stomach of the siluriform freshwater fish, Hatcheria macraei (Girard, 1855), in the Pichileufu River, Patagonia, Argentina. Its rediae with immature cystophorous cercariae were found in the snail Heleobia hatcheri (Pilsbry, 1911) in the same site. The present new species is morphologically featured by having a cyclocoel in the hindbody unlike the other species of the genus. The characteristics of this species allowed us to amend the diagnosis of the genus Genarchella as follows: cyclocoe

BACKGROUND: Neotricula aperta is the snail-intermediate host of the parasitic blood-fluke Schistosoma mekongi which causes Mekong schistosomiasis in Cambodia and the Lao PDR. Despite numerous phylogenetic studies only one DNA-sequence based population-genetic study of N. aperta had been published, and the origin, structure and persistence of N. aperta were poorly understood. Consequently, a phylogenetic and population genetic study was performed, with addition of new data to pre-existing DNA-sequences for N. aperta from remote and inaccessible habitats, including one new taxon from Laos and 50

The hemocyte transcriptome was for the first time obtained and analyzed in uninfected Planorbarius corneus snails and snails naturally infected with Bilharziella polonica parthenites (Schistosomatidae). Transcripts encoding all groups of immune factors previously described in other gastropods were found in assemblies. Pathogen recognition molecules were the most diverse group of transcripts encoding immunity factors. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) of 11 types were identified. The TLR set did not differ between infected and uninfected snails. The data expand the knowledge of snail immune responses

Recent conceptual and practical advances in phylogenetic species delimitation have enabled progressively robust biodiversity studies. Delimiting species in widespread taxa is an intriguing problem; the edible operculated land snail Cyclophorus volvulus (Müller, 1774) is a good example since it shows a high degree of shell and color variation along with a widespread distribution throughout Thailand. Taxonomic boundaries for C. volvulus were examined and clarified using a combined morphological and phylogenetic approach, the latter of which was based on both nuclear and mitochondrial gene sequen

This study elucidated for the first time, under laboratory conditions, the susceptibility of Lymnaea columella to infective juveniles of Heterorhabditis baujardi LPP7. Exposure to the nematodes induced an average mortality rate of 66.66% in the population of L. columella, with the highest values attained from the second week after exposure onward. In addition, all the reproductive parameters analyzed (total number of eggs, number of egg masses, number of eggs laid/snail, embryo hatching rate and content of galactogen stored in the albumen gland) changed as a result of the infection. The result

In Hokkaido, Japan, wild sika deer are highly infected with Fasciola flukes, suggesting that the flukes complete their life cycle via intermediate host snails and definitive host animals occurring in the natural environment. However, infected snails have been found only in cattle farms contaminated with fasciolosis. This study reports the first Fasciola larva infection in Galba truncatula snails occurring in the Shoro and Atsuma rivers in the natural environment. Molecular analysis revealed that the nad1 haplotype of the larvae was consistent with that of Fasciola adults obtained from sika dee

A comparative study of the genetic structure of 8 populations of B.globosus from 2 areas of different endemicity of Schistosoma haematobium was done. Five populations were from Chiweshe (high endemicity) and three were from Plumtree (low endemicity). Genetic structure, as determined by allozyme genetics, revealed high levels of genetic variability in Chiweshe populations (Ho = 0.12-0.26) and low levels in Plumtree (Ho = 0.06-0.12). Populations from Chiweshe were genetically heterogeneous whereas in Plumtree the populations were uniform. There were significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg pro

Recent molecular phylogenies have shown the polyphyly of widespread genera within the Chromodorididae. In this context, the genus Felimare was resurrected to include Eastern Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean species previously included in Hypselodoris, plus Mexichromis porterae (Cockerell, 1901) and Mexichromis kempfi (Ev. Marcus, 1971). The somewhat controversial genus Felimare currently includes species with different external, radular, and jaw shapes as well as different reproductive morphologies, resulting in the absence of a clear diagnosis for the genus. Here, we advance the systemati

From the mid-1980s, we recorded a significant increase in urinary schistosomiasis infection rate and transmission among inhabitants of lakeshore communities in the southern part of Lake Malaŵi, particularly on Nankumba peninsula in Mangochi District. We suggested that the increase was due to over-fishing, which reduced the density of snail-eating fishes, thereby allowing schistosome intermediate host snails to increase to higher densities. In this article, we collected data to test this hypothesis. The density of both Bulinus nyassanus, the intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium, and Mel

Bithyniids are freshwater snails that play a crucial role in the transmission of various parasitic trematodes of medical and veterinary importance. In this study, we explored the prevalence of cercarial trematode infections in bithyniid snails from Thailand and examined the species diversity of both the intermediate snail hosts and parasite larvae. A total of 688 bithyniid snails were collected from diverse natural habitats at 24 locations in 16 provinces across 5 regions of Thailand. The presence of larval trematode infections was examined using the cercarial shedding method. Both the collect

Most populations of Biomphalaria glabrata are highly compatible with Schistosoma mansoni strains, making it challenging to identify low-compatibility models to host-parasite interaction research. This study evaluated a B. glabrata population with low compatibility with the LE strain (SmLE) as a model. First, pigmented low susceptibility (LS) and albino susceptible (S) snails were paired to produce three progeny groups: Crossings (CR) between LS × S, LS (LS × LS), and S (S × S). F1 snails were individually challenged with SmLE, and compatibility and reproductive parameters were analyzed. Second

Coastal areas are affected by multiple stressors like climate change and endocrine disruptors (EDCs). In the laboratory, we investigated the combined effects of increased temperature and EDCs (drospirenone and mercury) on the fitness and gonads' maturation dynamics of the marine gastropod Nucella lapillus for 21 days. Survival was negatively affected by all the stressors alone, while, in combination, a synergistic negative effect was observed. Both chemicals, as single factors, did not cause any effect on the maturation stage of ovaries and testis. However, in the presence of a higher temperat

Human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) caused by avian schistosomes is an emerging health issue in different parts of the world. Nevertheless, parasite diversity, life cycle, and involvement in HCD remain poorly known or neglected in South America. Herein, we reported data obtained during a long-term malacological survey carried out in Pampulha Reservoir, an urban eutrophic waterbody from Brazil between 2009 and 2012. An ocellate brevifurcate cercaria emerged from 55 of 16,235 (0.34%) specimens of Biomphalaria straminea. Samples of the cercariae were subjected to morphological, experimental, and mol

In November 2017, Biomphalaria pfeifferi, the key intermediate host for Schistosoma mansoni in Africa, was first reported in Lake Malawi, Mangochi District. Two subsequent malacological surveys in 2018 and 2019 confirmed its lacustrine presence, as well as its presence along the Upper Shire River. These surveys provided sufficient specimens for analyses of the genetic structure and a transmission assessment for intestinal schistosomiasis. A total of 76 collected snails were characterized by a DNA sequence analysis of a 650 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (cox1); b

In contrast to the well-studied trematode fauna of lymnaeid snails, only little is known about the role of small planorbid snails as first intermediate hosts for trematodes in temperate freshwater systems. This study aims at closing this gap by assessing the diversity and composition of larval trematode communities in Gyraulus albus and Segmentina nitida in a Central European reservoir system, and by providing an updated comprehensive review of the published trematode records of these snail hosts. A total of 3691 planorbid snails (3270 G. albus; 421 S. nitida) was collected in three consecutiv

The effect of infection by Echinostoma paraensei on the mitochondrial physiology of Biomphalaria glabrata was investigated after exposure to 50 miracidia. The snails were dissected one, two, three and four weeks after infection for collection and mechanical permeabilization of the gonad-digestive gland (DGG) complex. The results obtained indicate that prepatent infection by this echinostomatid fluke significantly suppresses the phosphorylation state (respiratory state 3) and basal oxygen consumption of B. glabrata, demonstrating that the infection reduces the ability of the intermediate host t

Philophthalmus is a cosmopolitan genus of digeneans that includes ocular parasites of birds and mammals. Despite broad distribution and veterinary importance of these digeneans, there are still gaps in knowledge about their diversity and biology, especially in South America. Herein, we conducted morphological, life cycle, and molecular studies of megalurous cercariae found in aquatic gastropod molluscs Aylacostoma chloroticum and A. tuberculatum collected in the São Francisco River, Brazil. Adult parasites reared experimentally in the eyes of chicks are described here as Philophthalmus aylacos

Heterorhabditis bacteriophora is an entomopathogenic nematode (EPN) that is mutually associated with Photorhabdus luminescens, utilized globally for biological control of numerous organisms. Freshwater snails of the species Biomphalaria glabrata have been incriminated as the main intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in Brazil, but virtually nothing is known about the susceptibility of these gastropod to EPNs. Information in this respect is relevant for control of these intermediate hosts, and thus of the helminthiases they transmit. This paper for the first time reports the susceptibility

Cold seeps, characterized by the methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other hydrocarbon chemicals, foster one of the most widespread chemosynthetic ecosystems in deep sea that are densely populated by specialized benthos. However, scarce genomic resources severely limit our knowledge about the origin and adaptation of life in this unique ecosystem. Here, we present a genome of a deep-sea limpet Bathyacmaea lactea, a common species associated with the dominant mussel beds in cold seeps. We yielded 54.6 gigabases (Gb) of Nanopore reads and 77.9-Gb BGI-seq raw reads, respectively. Assembly harvested a
