Gene expression profiling in the pituitary gland of laying period and ceased period huoyan geese.

Huoyan goose is a Chinese local breed famous for its higher laying performance, but the problems of variety degeneration have emerged recently, especially a decrease in the number of eggs laid. In order to better understand the molecular mechanism that underlies egg laying in Huoyan geese, gene profiles in the pituitary gland of Huoyan geese taken during the laying period and ceased period were investigated using the suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) method. Total RNA was extracted from pituitary glands of ceased period and laying period geese. The cDNA in the pituitary glands of cea

Disseminated toxoplasmosis in magpie geese (Anseranas semipalmata) with large numbers of tissue cysts in livers.

Fatal disseminated Toxoplasma gondii infection was diagnosed in 2 captive magpie geese (Anseranas semipalmata) from a zoo in Texas. Both geese died suddenly, without apparent clinical signs. Lesions associated with T. gondii tachyzoites were seen in lungs, pancreas, liver, adrenals, bursa of Fabricius, spleen, brain, and kidneys. Toxoplasmic pneumonia and hepatitis were considered to be the primary cause of death. An unusual feature was the presence of numerous tissue cysts in hepatocytes of both geese. The diagnosis was confirmed immunohistochemically. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 2

Multi-year dietary and parasitological investigations of invasive Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca) in central Germany.

The Egyptian goose Alopochen aegyptiaca, native to Africa, was introduced to Europe between the 17th and 20th centuries as an ornamental and park bird. Since then, it has spread widely and has reached very high population densities in several countries, including Germany. In 2017, it was listed as an invasive alien species of Union concern, because its continued spread may have ecological impacts. To investigate its feeding ecology and parasite fauna, 100 Egyptian geese from the Wetterau region in Hesse, Germany, were examined over four years. Their diet consisted mainly of plant material, par

Microbiota contributes to regulates the external genitalia development through gut-testis axis in male geese.

Geese is one of the few poultry species with complete external genitalia, and the external genitalia abnormal development has become an important factor limiting the reproductive efficiency of the goose industry. Recent studies have shown that the gut microbiota plays an important role in regulating male reproductive processes, but its regulatory mechanisms in male geese's external genitalia development remain unclear. In this study, male geese with normal development (ND) and abnormal development (AD) external genitalia were selected as the research object, and multi-omics were used to invest

Molecular mechanisms of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian/thyroid axis regulating age at first egg in geese.

Age at first egg (AFE) has consistently garnered interest as a crucial reproductive indicator within poultry production. Previous studies have elucidated the involvement of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) and hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axes in regulating poultry sexual maturity. Concurrently, there was evidence suggesting a potential co-regulatory relationship between these 2 axes. However, as of now, no comprehensive exploration of the key pathways and genes responsible for the crosstalk between the HPO and HPT axes in the regulation of AFE has been reported. In this study,

The Photoperiod-Driven Cyclical Secretion of Pineal Melatonin Regulates Seasonal Reproduction in Geese (Anser cygnoides).

The photoperiod is the predominant environmental factor that governs seasonal reproduction in animals; however, the underlying molecular regulatory mechanism has yet to be fully elucidated. Herein, Yangzhou geese (Anser cygnoides) were selected at the spring equinox (SE), summer solstice (SS), autumn equinox (AE), and winter solstice (WS), and the regulation of seasonal reproduction via the light-driven cyclical secretion of pineal melatonin was investigated. We show that there were seasonal variations in the laying rate and GSI, while the ovarian area decreased 1.5-fold from the SS to the AE.

Effects of recombinant goose adiponectin on steroid hormone secretion in Huoyan geese ovarian granulosa cells.

Adiponectin is an adipokine associated with the regulation of reproductive processes. To determine whether recombinant goose adiponectin contributes to the goose ovarian steroidogenesis, the native and then purified goose recombinant adiponectin protein was produced using recombinant DNA technologies. The effect of recombinant adiponectin on the progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2) production in Huoyan geese ovarian granulosa cells was examined. Furthermore, the effect of recombinant adiponectin (2.5 μg/mL) on the abundance of StAR (steroidogenic acute regulatory protein), CYP11A1 (cytochrome

Histological characteristics of follicles and reproductive hormone secretion during ovarian follicle development in laying geese.

Egg production in different goose breeds vary significantly, which is related with the physiology of reproduction. However, the knowledge of physiology of goose reproduction is not well documented. In the present study, the 3 breeds with significantly different egg production were selected to investigate the histological characteristics of follicles and reproductive hormone secretion during follicle development, which included Carlos geese (Anser anser), Zhejiang geese (Anser cygnoides), and Yangzhou geese (Anser cygnoides). The results indicated that there were significant differences in the

Cassava foliage affects the microbial diversity of Chinese indigenous geese caecum using 16S rRNA sequencing.

Geese are extremely adept in utilizing plant-derived roughage within their diet. However, the intestinal microbiome of geese remains limited, especially the dietary effect on microbial diversity. Cassava foliage was widely used in animal feed, but little information is available for geese. In this study, the geese were fed with control diet (CK), experimental diet supplemented with 5% cassava foliage (CF5) or 10% (CF10) for 42 days, respectively. The cecal samples were collected after animals were killed. High-throughput sequencing technology was used to investigate the microbial diversity in

Identification of Type II Interferon Receptors in Geese: Gene Structure, Phylogenetic Analysis, and Expression Patterns.

Interferon γ receptor 1 (IFNGR1) and IFNGR2 are two cell membrane molecules belonging to class II cytokines, which play important roles in the IFN-mediated antiviral signaling pathway. Here, goose IFNGR1 and IFNGR2 were cloned and identified for the first time. Tissue distribution analysis revealed that relatively high levels of goose IFNγ mRNA transcripts were detected in immune tissues, including the harderian gland, cecal tonsil, cecum, and thymus. Relatively high expression levels of both IFNGR1 and IFNGR2 were detected in the cecal tonsil, which implicated an important role of IFNγ in the

Comparative Analysis of Mandibular Shape Variation in Domestic Geese and Ducks Using Linear and Geometric Morphometrics.

In this study, a comparative assessment of species- and sex-related differentiation was conducted using two morphometric approaches based on mandibles of domestic geese (Anser anser domesticus) and domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus). A relatively traditional approach based on linear measurements was applied alongside a more recent method employing three-dimensional scanning and landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques. The effectiveness of both methods in discriminating morphological differences associated with species and sex was evaluated. For this purpose, a total of 80

Multi-omics joint analysis and identification of candidate genes for the rate of right ovarian degeneration in geese.

Avian species exhibit a notable asymmetry in their reproductive systems, with the left ovary maturing into a functional organ and the right ovary degenerating. This asymmetry is widespread across bird species, yet the molecular underpinnings of right ovarian degeneration are not fully understood. In this study, we constructed a cellular atlas of the degenerating right ovary in geese through single-cell transcriptome sequencing (scRNA-seq), revealing distinct cellular compositions and gene expression profiles. Meanwhile, we identified variations in the rate of right ovarian degeneration among i

Isolation and characterization of a new goose orthoreovirus causing liver and spleen focal necrosis in geese, China.

Since July 2020, an infectious disease characterized by liver and spleen white focal necrosis has been spreading widely through geese farms in many regions of China. A novel goose orthoreovirus (GRV), designated GRV-GD2020, was isolated from the liver and spleen of dead geese. Phylogenetic analysis and sequence comparison revealed that all the genes of GRV-GD2020 clustered with other waterfowl-origin orthoreovirus. However, the gene constellation of GRV-GD2020 was not similar to that of any particular strain. Instead, the genomic segments of GRV-GD2020 showed 27.5-97.3% similarities to that of

A review of episodes of zinc phosphide toxicosis in wild geese (Branta spp.) in Oregon (2004-2011).

Epizootic mortality in several geese species, including cackling geese (Branta hutchinsii) and Canada geese (Branta canadensis), has been recognized in the Willamette Valley of Oregon for over a decade. Birds are generally found dead on a body of water or are occasionally observed displaying neurologic clinical signs such as an inability to raise or control the head prior to death. Investigation of these epizootic mortality events has revealed the etiology to be accidental poisoning with the rodenticide zinc phosphide (Zn(3)P(2)). Gross and histologic changes are restricted to acute pulmonary
