This study examines the coping strategies used by refugee women who have survived gender-based violence (GBV) across multiple stages of migration. Drawing on interviews with 50 urban refugee women in Nairobi, Kenya, the study explores how coping processes shift or remain consistent throughout the migration trajectory using the migration process framework. Although GBV is widespread among forcibly displaced women globally, limited research has investigated how survivors appraise and manage the stress of these experiences over time and within changing displacement contexts. BACKGROUND: Previous literature emphasized that females with different age-groups are subjected to psychological, physical, and sexual abuse. There are many possible sources of violence against females including intimate partners, parents, family members, cousins, neighbors, and any man with authority or power.
OBJECTIVE: To explore the prevalence and sources of different violence acts among the Jordanian female youth (18-24 years).
DESIGN: A cross-sectional, egocentric social network design was used to collect data from 960 youth in Jordan (480 men and 480 women) aged between 18 years and 2

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant public health concern affecting one in three women globally. GBV is deeply rooted in gender inequality and societal constructs of gender roles, which significantly contribute to its prevalence and impact on women. Injury to the head, face, and neck, including broken teeth and jaws, is common in GBV, as is dental neglect, indicating a role for dental care. However, the impact of maxillofacial injuries or poor oral health and the role dental professionals may play in supporting individuals experiencing GBV are often overlooked. This review

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, Morocco has increasingly become the chosen destination for a growing number of migrants from neighbouring countries and especially from Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study is to describe the sexual and reproductive health (SRH), as well as sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) among female migrants in Morocco.
METHODS: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted between July and December 2021. Female migrants were recruited from one university maternity hospital and two primary healthcare centres in Rabat. Data were collected using a structu

Homelessness is an important risk factor for gender-based violence (GBV), particularly among youth, and disproportionally affects women and girls. Survivors of GBV experience enduring and severe physical, psychological, and sexual health problems. Although key elements in service delivery for survivors of GBV have been identified, little is known about outcomes of community-based programs aiming to assist homeless and unstably housed youth experiencing GBV. This longitudinal study aimed to quantitatively evaluate changes in mental health and well-being outcomes in female identified youth exper

Gender-based violence (GBV) is common among women with and at risk for HIV, yet little is known about the GBV associated psychological factors that could be modifiable through behavioral interventions. The current study examined the associations between some of these psychological factors (i.e., hopelessness, consideration of future consequences, self esteem), mental health symptoms, substance abuse, and GBV among a sample of 736 HIV-infected and sociodemographically similar uninfected participants in the Women's Interagency HIV Study (WIHS). Results indicated high rates of lifetime GBV among

Gender-based violence (GBV), characterized by the abduction or rape of women and girls to humiliate, intimidate, and traumatize them and their communities, is a profoundly disturbing tactic in international conflict. Long after armed conflict has ended, survivors continue to experience physical injuries, psychological trauma, and social and cultural stigma. Guilt, shame, and continued interpersonal violence can become a normalized part of daily life, significantly challenging the road to healing and recovery. Research about self-disclosure and narrative after GBV has shown that help seeking ra

Few studies have described the broader experience of survivors of female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) who have sought asylum in the United States. To gain a better understanding of their exposure to gender-based violence (GBV), the study was conducted to help uncover themes and patterns of co-occurring individual and community factors among women asylum seekers who experienced FGM/C before they arrived in the United States. Following a retrospective chart review of FGM/C cases seen in a human rights clinic, 35 women met the inclusion criteria. The constant comparative method (CCM) was

Women working in the entertainment industry are confronted with various forms of gender-based violence (GBV). However, their vulnerability remains understudied, particularly in resource-limited settings. This study aims to examine the prevalence of GBV among female entertainment workers (FEWs) in Cambodia and identify factors associated with victimization. We conducted a cross-sectional study in November 2018 for the impact evaluation of a randomized controlled trial. We used a stratified random sampling method to recruit 600 FEWs from different entertainment venues in the capital city and thr

BACKGROUND: Levels of gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are high; health services for survivors are limited. Evidence from the few existing health services for survivors can inform improvements in care in this and similar settings.
METHODS: Médecins Sans Frontières supported health services for survivors in Lae, PNG from 2008-2013. Routine monitoring data from August 2010-April 2013 were used to describe patient and service characteristics.
RESULTS: 5,892 individuals received care over 6,860 presentations, the majority self-referred or referred by friends and family. Presentati

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a pervasive public health issue with profound psychological, relational, and structural consequences. While survivors draw upon internal resources, external resources, internal motivators, and external motivators throughout the healing process, existing instruments typically assess these constructs independently rather than within a unified, survivor-centered framework. The Motivators and Resources for Trauma Recovery (I-MOVE) Scale was developed to address this gap through a strengths-based assessment of recovery facilitators among women survivors of GBV. The fo

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is a global public health problem. While research exists on GBV and associated help-seeking behaviors among university students, few studies have assessed the prevalence of GBV, including experiences and barriers to help-seeking, within sub-Saharan African university settings.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of GBV victimization among university students in six sub-Saharan African countries and describe experiences of formal and informal help-seeking among students who self-identified as victims of GBV since attendi

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence (GBV) is a common human right violence in conflict-affected communities. Women with GBV are prone to experience mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. However, there is a paucity of evidence as to what extent the problem is affecting internally displaced women (IDW) in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of GBV and its associated factors among IDW in Northwest Ethiopia.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among IDW residing at three humanitarian sites from May to June 2022 in Northwes

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that Gender-based violence (GBV) is prevalent throughout the perinatal period. Women during this time have frequent contact with healthcare providers (HCPs), and there are many opportunities that HCPs can identify GBV and support women by early intervention during routine prenatal care. However, evidence shows that HCPs are still hesitant to address this issue. This study was conducted to explore the experiences of Survivors and HCPs on how to manage a meaningful conversation about GBV with survivors during perinatal care.
METHODS: A thematic approach

BACKGROUND: Gender-based violence is an important topic that needs to be taken into account when identifying gender-related gaps and disadvantages that a person might face because of their gender. Violence against women could result in psychological and physical adverse outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence and predictors of gender-based violence among female students at Wolkite University, southwest Ethiopia, 2021.
METHOD: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 393 female students and the students were selected by using a systematic sampling

Violence experienced by cisgender (cis) and gender minority women living with HIV is known to be high. More work is needed to better understand how to support women living with HIV who have experienced violence. The objectives of this study are therefore to identify the prevalence and correlates of violence by any perpetrator among women living with HIV in a Canadian setting. Data were drawn from 9 years (January, 2010 to February, 2019) of a longitudinal community-based open cohort study of 350+ cis and trans women living with HIV who were living and/or accessed care in Metro Vancouver, Canad

This cross-sectional study identified the prevalence of gender based violence (GBV) and examined its association with sexual risk behavior among female sex workers (FSWs). Among 120 participants between ages 20 and 52, a total of 56.7 % reported lifetime GBV. Multivariate analyses revealed that GBV was significantly associated with inconsistent condom use, unprotected sex, condom misuse, fear of client reaction to requests of condom use, self-reported history of STIs, and earlier age of initiation of sex work. GBV must be considered an urgent public health priority among FSWs in Armenia. Inter
