Deep learning versus general dentists: a clinical evaluation of caries diagnostic accuracy on bitewing radiographs.

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic accuracy of caries detection on bitewing radiographs varies among dentists and is strongly influenced by lesion severity. Improving the detection of initial and extensive carious lesions remains clinically important for appropriate treatment planning. This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of a deep learning-based detection model and compared its performance with that of general dentists in detecting caries on bitewing radiographs of primary teeth, applying lesion severity criteria relevant to clinical caries management. METHODS: A total of 1,427 bitewing r

Guidance for general dental practitioners on the recognition and referral of potential orthognathic cases.

Orthognathic treatment is a complex, multidisciplinary process that addresses significant dentofacial discrepancies to improve function, aesthetics, and quality of life. General dental practitioners (GDPs) play an important role throughout this journey, from early assessment and referral to long-term post-treatment care. This paper provides practical guidance for GDPs to optimise their contribution to the orthognathic pathway. Emphasis is placed on timely recognition of malocclusions and appropriate referral to specialist services, guided by an understanding of facial growth and dental develop

Impact of the 2018 periodontal classification on diagnosis, treatment strategies, and assessment of prognosis by dental hygienists in Swedish general dental care.

UNLABELLED: treatment strategies, and prognostic assessments made by dental hygienists in general dentistry, compared with the 1999 classification. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire comprising five patient cases was administered to dental hygienists in Sweden on two separate occasions. For each case, diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognostic assessments were proposed, first using the 1999 and subsequently the 2018 classification. Cases ranged from no marginal bone loss attributed to periodontitis and few (<10%) bleeding sites to marginal bone loss >30% and generalized inflammation (>30%

UK National Third Molar project: the initial report.

The National Third Molar (NTM) project was set up to assess current clinical practice in the UK concerning the management of third molar teeth. Patients were recruited from both hospital and general dental practice. During the one month study period 9248 patients with 26,577 third molars were recruited. In this report we present the findings in the 8298 patients with 25,001 third molars who were referred to hospital for assessment. Over half of all patients referred for assessment had either no extractions or a single third molar extracted. Less than a quarter of all patients referred underwen

Changes in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and PTSD in an RCT-study of dentist-administered treatment of dental anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Educating dentists in treatment methods for dental anxiety would increase the patients' access to treatments that are important to their oral health. However, to avoid adverse effects on comorbid symptoms, involvement by a psychologist has been considered necessary. The objective of the present paper was to evaluate whether a dentist could implement systematized treatments for dental anxiety without an increase in comorbid symptoms of anxiety, depression or PTSD. METHODS: A two-arm parallel randomised controlled trial was set in a general dental practice. Eighty-two patients with

Screening of atrial fibrillation in dental practices: a qualitative feasibility study.

OBJECTIVES: To increase the detection of unknown atrial fibrillation (AF), general practitioners have started screening their patients using small hand-held devices. It is thought that dental settings could be utilized for screening as they have regular access to patients. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of dental staff of screening for AF using a hand-held electronic device in primary dental care. METHODS: The research took place in one large mixed NHS and private general dental practice. Views from staff including dentists, dental therapists, dental nurses, and managers

[Tobacco use prevention and cessation in the dental practice].

This is the fourth part of a series of publications from the Swiss task force named "Smoking--intervention in the private dental office" on the topic "tobacco use and dental medicine". It presents the implementation of tobacco use prevention and cessation in the dental practice. Next to the optimal performance of plaque control, tobacco use cessation has become the most important measure for the treatment of periodontal diseases. In contrast to general medicine practice, the dental practice team is seeing its patients regularly and is therefore capable of helping their patients quit tobacco us

Knowledge, awareness, and attitudes toward oral irrigator use among dentists and dental students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Interdental plaque control is critically important in maintaining oral hygiene. Oral irrigators (also known as water flossers) are recommended as an alternative oral hygiene tool, especially for individuals who have difficulty using traditional dental floss. Although numerous studies evaluate the clinical effectiveness of oral irrigators in the literature, studies examining the knowledge level, awareness, and clinical attitudes of dentists and dental students towards these devices are limited. The aim of this study is to evaluate knowledge, awareness, and attitudes regarding the us

Irreversible Pulpitis - A Source of Antibiotic Over-Prescription?

Antibiotic resistance is a growing public health concern. Antibiotics continue to be prescribed by some clinicians to resolve dental pain even though research indicates that antibiotics are not effective for treating conditions such as irreversible pulpitis. The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which current research and evidence around irreversible pulpitis has been translated into dental practice and the gaps in dentists' knowledge. An on-line clinical vignette format survey questionnaire about treatment of irreversible pulpitis was distributed to the members of the Aca

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia: a challenge for general dental practitioners.

Craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (CFD) is an asymptomatic disease that can have oral manifestations with severe effects on a patient's wellbeing. It is usually diagnosed based on patient concerns, including poor appearance due to spacing and functional difficulties in eating and speaking, as well as the presenting features, such as facial asymmetry and corresponding malocclusion, delayed or abnormal tooth eruption, and painless swelling or bony expansion. General dental practitioners (GDPs) will often see patients presenting with these multiple symptoms which can be overwhelming. An awareness of

Present status and future directions: Managing endodontic emergencies.

Endodontic emergencies are common in both general dental practices and specialist Endodontic practices. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of endodontic emergencies. Endodontic emergencies can be a result of many different conditions of the pulp, root canal and periradicular tissues. They may occur before endodontic treatment has been started, between appointments when treatment is being performed over multiple visits, or after endodontic treatment has been completed. In the latter situation, the emergency may be very soon after the treatment or it may occur many years later, in

Continuing professional development in general dentistry-experiences of an online flipped classroom.

INTRODUCTION: Continuing professional development is a lifelong learning process. One pedagogical approach that can be used is active learning. Flipped classroom is a method that has been shown to improve deeper conceptual understanding. In an online setting, the method saves travel, time, and costs. To our knowledge, flipped classroom is rarely used in continuing professional education. This study in general dentistry explored experiences of an online flipped classroom course in continuing professional development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen dental hygienists, clinically active in genera
