PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review examines recent publications that provide insight into how the trend toward nonanonymity and disclosure in gamete donation impacts donors, intended parents, and their donor-conceived children.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent findings show an increase in donor programs that offer open-identity between donors and offspring. The psychological needs of gamete donors and their attitudes toward disclosure are increasingly given consideration. Qualitative research on how parents of donor gamete offspring make decisions about disclosure reveals that even when couples ini

Polygenic risk scores (PRS) are rapidly developing, enabling estimates of genetic risk for developing psychiatric disorders. Psychiatric PRS are also increasingly entering consumer and clinical settings. Yet, little is known about how adults with psychiatric disorders perceive their potential use. Here, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 29 adults with psychiatric disorders to examine their perspectives on hypothetically receiving psychiatric PRS for themselves and their current or future children. Key themes emerged around perceived utility, motivations and deterrents to genetic tes

OBJECTIVE: Describe the attitudes and preferences of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with congenital heart disease (CHD) toward clinical genetic testing and sharing their genetic data for research.
METHODS: We conducted interviews (n = 20) with AYA patients ages 15-21 years, diagnosed with CHD, who provided age-appropriate assent with parental permission or consent. Interviews were analyzed using analytic memos and applied thematic analysis.
RESULTS: We found three overarching themes. First, AYAs viewed genetic testing as a tool for understanding and preparing for life with CHD. AYAs tho

In 2025, widespread sociopolitical changes in the United States deeply influenced the experiences of healthcare professionals, including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) genetic counselors. Cascading harms, including economic instability, healthcare policy changes, and restrictive immigration and reproductive measures, affected marginalized communities across the country, intersecting with existing social determinants of health. This brief report presents qualitative findings from semi-structured interviews conducted with participants who were enrolled in a longitudinal study abo

Sperm donors' obligations are typically constrained to the immediate circumstances surrounding the donation and to its time frame. This paper makes the case for recognizing an ongoing ethical obligation that binds sperm donors to disclose, in a timely manner, meaningful genetic information to recipients and donor-conceived children. The paper delineates and conceptualizes the suggested (potentially reciprocal) duty and argues that it is not the genetic link between the donor and the donor-conceived child that binds donors by said duty, but rather social responsibility. Accordingly, an original

During the last decade, the field of human genome research has gone through a phase of rapid discovery that has provided scientists and physicians with a wide variety of research tools that are applicable to important medical issues. We describe a true case of familial Huntington disease (HD) in which we modified personal details to protect patient's privacy, where the proband at risk preferred not to know his disease status but wanted to know the status in his unborn child. Once we found the father to be negative, the case raised an important ethical question regarding the management of this

Telephone disclosure of BRCA1/2 molecular genetic test results has been proposed as a feasible alternative to traditional in-person results disclosure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between method of result disclosure with the patient outcome variables of knowledge, cancer worry, cancer risk perception, satisfaction, and cancer screening and prophylactic surgery behaviors. Study participants included 228 women who completed retrospective, self-administered, mailed surveys regarding their pre-test genetic counseling and results disclosure. No significant relation

In the United States, molecular HIV epidemiology (MHE) is a key part of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which incorporates the evaluation of HIV genetic sequences for cluster detection and response. Data collection for MHE occurs without any requirement for formal consent from patients, which has sparked ethical concerns among community members, ethicists, and advocates. We conducted a rapid review of the current literature on informed consent and MHE to understand the key concerns and recommendations. We searched 4 academic databases and included articles that examined the issue of informed c

Identifying which variables do influence a response while controlling false positives pervades statistics and data science. In this paper, we consider a scenario in which we only have access to summary statistics, such as the values of marginal empirical correlations between each dependent variable of potential interest and the response. This situation may arise due to privacy concerns, e.g., to avoid the release of sensitive genetic information. We extend GhostKnockoffs He et al. [2022] and introduce variable selection methods based on penalized regression achieving false discovery rate (FDR)

Allele frequency data from human reference populations is of increasing value for the filtering, interpretation, and assignment of pathogenicity to genetic variants. Aged and healthy populations are more likely to be selectively depleted of pathogenic alleles and therefore particularly suitable as a reference population for the major diseases of clinical and public health importance. However, reference studies of confirmed healthy elderly individuals have remained under-represented in human genetics. Here we describe the Medical Genome Reference Bank (MGRB), a large-scale comprehensive whole-g

BACKGROUND: Digital health tools, such as health chatbots, may improve access to scalable health support, but adoption remains inconsistent. Existing models do not fully integrate technology acceptance factors with health motivation factors relevant to digital health use.
OBJECTIVE: This study proposed and tested the health technology acceptance model and examined whether normative message framing and chatbot type were associated with health motivation, technology acceptance, and intention to use a health chatbot.
METHODS: In October 2025, we conducted a 4 × 2 between-participants online exp

BACKGROUND: Genetic testing presents unique ethical challenges for research and clinical practice, particularly in low-resource settings. To address such challenges, context-specific understanding of ethical, legal and social issues is essential. Return of genetics and genomics research (GGR) results remains an unresolved yet topical issue particularly in African settings that lack appropriate regulation and guidelines. Despite the need to understand what is contextually acceptable, there is a paucity of empirical research and literature on what constitutes appropriate practice with respect to

Epigenomic and neurocognitive studies have provided new perspectives on post-traumatic stress disorder and its intergenerational transmission. This article outlines the lessons learned from community engagement (CE) in such research on Rwandan genocide survivors. A strong trauma-related response was observed within the research project-targeted community (genocide survivors) during explanation of the project. CE also revealed privacy concerns, as community members worried that any leakage of genetic/(epi)genomic data could affect not only themselves but also their close relatives. Adopting a c

Forensic DNA phenotyping (FDP) has emerged as an essential tool in criminal investigations, enabling the prediction of physical traits based on genetic information. This review explores the genetic factors influencing skin pigmentation, particularly within Asian populations, with a focus on Thailand. Key genes such as Oculocutaneous Albinism II (OCA2), Dopachrome Tautomerase (DCT), KIT Ligand (KITLG), and Solute Carrier Family 24 Member 2 (SLC24A2) are examined for their roles in melanin production and variations that lead to different skin tones. The OCA2 gene is highlighted for its role in t

Next-generation sequencing has transformed diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment across rare disease, cancer, immunology, and infectious disease. As variant interpretation may evolve with emerging evidence, sharing genetic data is essential to improve diagnostic accuracy and advance genomic medicine. However, practical guidance for implementing clinical genetic data sharing remains limited. The Canadian College of Medical Geneticists (CCMG), therefore, developed national guidance to support secure, ethical, and effective genetic data sharing by Canadian clinical laboratories. An ad hoc CCMG work

BACKGROUND: Some persons conceived with donor gametes react negatively when they found their birth via donor conception. They request access to information about and seek to communicate with the donor. However, some countries mandate donor anonymity. Other countries allow donor-conceived persons to access donor information, but they can only use this access if their parents have disclosed donor conception to them. We investigated a thorny issue of donor conception: whether donor conception should be shifted from an anonymous basis to a non-anonymous basis.
METHODS: We review the issues and co

Thousands of people worldwide have been conceived using donor gametes, but not all parents tell their children of their origin. Several countries now allow donor-conceived offspring to potentially know their genetic parent if they are informed of their donor-conceived status. At the same time, personal genetic testing is a rapidly expanding field. Over 3 million people have already used direct-to-consumer genetic testing to find information about their ancestry, and many are participating in international genetic genealogy databases that will match them with relatives. The increased prevalence
