BACKGROUND: Parents' perceptions of their children's mental health - including recognition of specific mental health problems as such, and their beliefs about the causes and treatments for the problems - have an important impact on child mental health.
AIMS: This study investigated child mental health literacy among Cambodian and Vietnamese mothers.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 357 mothers in Hanoi, Vietnam, and Pnom Penh and Kampong Speu, Cambodia. The Child Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire was used to assess mothers' mental health literacy, in particular their ab

This study examines the core components of children's basic security and well-being in order to examine issues central to improving child protection in Rwanda. Sources of data included 15 focus groups with adults, 7 focus groups with children ages 10-17, and 11 key informant interviews with child protection stakeholders, including representatives from international NGOs, community-based groups, and the Rwandan Government, all of which took place in April and May of 2010. Participants painted a complex picture of threats to children's basic security in Rwanda. Three key themes were pervasive ac

OBJECTIVES: Critically reflecting on history of medicine during Nazism and the Holocaust (MNH) which included egregious ethical violations such as genocide complicity is a powerful platform for scaffolding Professional Identity Formation (PIF) with contemporary relevance for health professions education (HPE), clinical and research practices, and public policy. The study explored the longitudinal impact of MNH curriculum with an Auschwitz Memorial study trip on personal and PIF including moral development as a key PIF component.
METHODS: The authors used immersion-crystallization qualitative

INTRODUCTION: Low- and middle-income countries shoulder a disproportionate burden of mental health disorders with limited resources to support the provision of care using culturally relevant, evidence-based interventions. This is particularly true in Cambodia where the population continues to confront traumatic consequences of the Khmer Rouge genocide that targeted educated people, including treatment providers. Trauma-Informed Treatment Algorithms for Advancing Novel Outcomes (Project TITAN) will examine proof of concept and preliminary efficacy of culturally tailored interventions for sympto

In Rwanda, the dual vectors of HIV and legacy of the 1994 genocide have had devastating consequences for children and families. In this and other low-resource settings, extreme poverty, poor access to services, family conflict, and other adversities put children and families affected by HIV/AIDS at increased risk of mental health problems. However, even in the face of tremendous hardship, many children and families demonstrate better than expected outcomes. To design interventions that harness these natural sources of resilience, greater knowledge of local protective processes is needed. This

GOALS: Describe the establishment and expansion of a global gastrointestinal (GI) partnership and its impact on the advancement of GI care in Rwanda.
BACKGROUND: GI disease disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries. In Rwanda, governmental and nonprofit efforts have made significant progress in expanding access to health care in the wake of the 1994 genocide; however, specialized care remains largely unrecognized or inaccessible. In response, the Rwanda Ministry of Health established a partnership with an international gastroenterology NGO to address this critical need.

Intergenerational transmission of trauma (ITT) has been documented among offspring of parents exposed to war, genocide, and interpersonal violence, yet little is known about ITT among families of World Trade Center responders (WTC-R). The aftermath of 9/11 terrorist attacks provides a unique naturalistic context for examining long-term psychological outcomes among now-adult offspring raised during periods of parental trauma exposure and recovery. The WTC-R cohort comprised traditional first responders (i.e., law enforcement officers) and nontraditional recovery workers, among whom those with P

Shame, tonic immobility, and passive reactions to stressful events are phylogenetically conserved, obligatory, submissive defense reactions. Behavior, biology, genetics, evolutionary theories, and theories of humans as ultra-social animals are integrated to expand the understanding of these defense reactions in ways that are missing from current theories. In Study 1, 445 undergraduates selected the event that caused them the most shame, the event that produced their greatest inability to move or speak, and the stressful event that bothered them the most. Event-specific measures included the se

UNLABELLED: The severity of post-traumatic stress disorder and its long-lasting effects among the Yazidi population has not yet been investigated.
OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the impact of PTSD severity and chronicity on physiological and anthropometric parameters in women survivors of the genocide-related events after the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) attack in 2014.
METHODS: The diagnosis PTSD was assessed using PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). Participants were divided into: External control (healthy individuals living outside the camps), Internal control (healthy

BACKGROUND: Between 1883 and 1996, thousands of Indigenous children were apprehended into Canada's Residential School System. Survivors and their descendants have testified to genocidal harms caused across generations. Yet, Indigenous Peoples continue to exist and resist through inherent resilience described by intergenerational survivors in this paper.
OBJECTIVE: This article focuses on stories demonstrating the strength, power, and resilience of intergenerational residential school survivors.

BACKGROUND: Measles outbreaks are reported after insufficient vaccine coverage, especially in countries recovering from natural disaster or conflict. We compared seroprevalence to measles in blood donors in Rwanda and Sweden and explored distribution of active cases of measles and vaccine coverage in Rwanda.
METHODS: 516 Rwandan and 215 Swedish blood donors were assayed for measles-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Data on vaccine coverage and acute cases in Rwanda from 1980 to 2014 were collected, and IgM on serum samples and polymerase chain react

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." This maxim underscores the importance of historical awareness in medicine, particularly for obstetricians and gynecologists (ObGyns). ObGyns significantly impact societal health through their care for pregnant women, fetuses, and newborns, uniquely positioning them to advocate for health initiatives with lasting societal benefits. Despite its importance, the history of medicine is underrepresented in medical curricula, missing opportunities to foster critical thinking and ethical decision-making. In today's climate of threatened

Native Hawaiians of all age groups tend to show a higher prevalence of substance use than other ethnic groups in the state. Research shows that this inequitable health status results from several complex and interconnected social determinants of health, including historical trauma, discrimination, and lifestyle changes. Before European contact, Native Hawaiians understood that balanced nutrition, physical activity, social relationships, and spirituality were fundamental to maintaining optimal health. Western influences triggered an imbalance in Native Hawaiian society, shifting the paradigm of

BACKGROUND: Couples' voluntary HIV counseling and testing (CVCT) is a WHO-recommended intervention for prevention of heterosexual HIV transmission which very few African couples have received. We report the successful nationwide implementation of CVCT in Rwanda.
METHODS: From 1988 to 1994 in Rwanda, pregnant and postpartum women were tested for HIV and requested testing for their husbands. Partner testing was associated with more condom use and lower HIV and sexually transmitted infection rates, particularly among HIV-discordant couples. After the 1994 genocide, the research team continued to

BACKGROUND: Incorporating American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) traditional practices and knowledge into healthcare can support AI/AN health. Drug overdose deaths disproportionately impact AI/AN communities due to colonization, genocide, historical trauma, discriminatory policies, and under-resourced healthcare. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD; e.g., buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone) are considered the most effective treatment for reducing mortality. Integrating AI/AN cultural practices with MOUD may increase acceptability and uptake of MOUD within AI/AN communities.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we reported a strong, disease-independent relationship between accumulated preadult environmental risks and violent aggression later in life. Risk factors were interchangeable, and migration was among the explored risks. Alarmed by these data, we assessed collected risk load in young 'Работает' refugees as a specific subgroup of current migration streams and evaluated first signals of behavioral abnormalities.
METHODS: In 9 German refugee centers, n = 133 young refugees, not previously in contact with the health system, were recruited, many of them unaccompanied minors. R

BACKGROUND: No population-based studies have directly compared the long-term health and mental health outcomes of conflict- versus non-conflict-affected communities from the same ethnic background.
AIMS: To identify and compare levels of psychiatric morbidity between a traumatized and non-traumatized civilian community; to investigate the long-term impact of mass violence.
METHODS: Double-stratified community surveys in Siem Reap and Surin provinces were conducted by highly qualified Cambodian interviewers using culturally validated survey instruments with known psychometric properties. Thes

This narrative review documents how Rwanda has transformed in public health extraordinarily post the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, placing it as an exemplary model for health care systems resilience in low-income countries. The review is based on the World Health Organization building blocks to look at the strategic changes that have led to measurable gains in the health of Rwandan people. Good centralized leadership and control have been key to this accomplishment. This made it possible to decentralize service delivery, build excellent health information systems, and invest money in the he
