Genetic and transcriptomic analysis of microbial electro-extraction for releasing metals from spent Lithium-Ion batteries.

Sustainable recycling strategies are urgently needed to address the rapidly growing accumulation of spent lithium-ion batteries. Current strategies for the first step in recycling, the solubilization of lithium and other metals, are energy intensive and/or generate toxic waste. This study critically evaluated the option of 'microbial electro-extraction' (MEE), a process in which electroactive microbes supply electrons to reduce the nickel, cobalt, and manganese in spent lithium-ion battery powder, releasing the soluble reduced ions of these metals along with soluble Li+. Redox-mediated Zn electrode for hydrogen supplementation to enhance microbial electrolysis reduces toxicity and improved nitrate removal.

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) offer a promising approach for nitrate-contaminated sewage wastewater treatment oxidative stress-induced damage to electroactive biofilms, and inadequate hydrogen availability for complete denitrification. This study presents a novel redox-mediated Zn electrode designed to Zn²⁺/Zn⁰ redox couple selectively scavenges highly reactive oxidative species, including hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and peroxynitrite (ONOO⁻), thereby mitigating oxidative stress and protecting electroactive microorganisms and redox-active enzymes. The Zn-redox electrode demonstrated remarkab

Bacterial mercury methylation modulated by vitamin B9: An overlooked pathway leads to increased environmental risks.

There has been a serious health and environmental concern in conversion of inorganic mercury (Hg) to the neurotoxin, methylmercury (MeHg) by anaerobic microbes, while very little is known about the potential role of vitamin B9 (VB9) regulator in the biochemical generation of MeHg. This study innovatively investigated bacterial Hg methylation by Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA in the presence of VB9 under two existing scenarios. In the low-complexing scenario, the bacterial MeHg yield reached 68 % higher than that without VB9 within 72 h, which was attributed to free VB9-protected PCA cells reliev

Redox interactions between Cr(VI) and Fe(II) in bioreduced biotite and chlorite.

Contamination of the environment with Cr as chromate (Cr(VI)) from industrial activities is of significant concern as Cr(VI) is a known carcinogen, and is mobile in the subsurface. The capacity of Fe(II)-containing phyllosilicates including biotite and chlorite to alter the speciation, and thus the mobility, of redox-sensitive contaminants including Cr(VI) is of great interest since these minerals are common in soils and sediments. Here, the capacity of bacteria, ubiquitous in the surface and near-surface environment, to reduce Fe(III) in phyllosilicate minerals and, thus, alter their redox re

Molecular transformation of natural organic matter associated with arsenic mobility via microbial iron reduction in aquifer settings.

Natural organic matter (NOM) critically influences the biotransformation of arsenic (As) in groundwater systems. However, the molecular-level transformation of NOM during arsenic mobilization remains poorly understood. In this study, Geobacter metallireducens strain GS-15 was cultured to reductively dissolve of As-loaded iron (hydro)oxides. The results demonstrated that water-soluble organic matter (WSOM), extracted from sediments in Jianghan Plain, effectively stimulated microbial iron (hydro)oxide reduction and As release. The initial increase followed by a decline in aqueous As concentratio

Effect of biogenic iron species and copper ions on the reduction of carbon tetrachloride under iron-reducing conditions.

In this study, the cell-mediated and abiotic reduction of carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) by biogenic iron species produced from the reductive dissolution of ferrihydrite in the presence of Geobacter sulfurreducens and copper ions (Cu(II)) were investigated. 9,10-Anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), serving as a surrogate of natural organic matters and an electron shuttling compound, was added to enhance the efficiency of biological reduction of the solid Fe(III) minerals. G. sulfurreducens drove the reduction of CCl(4), primarily through the formation of biogenic surface-bound iron species pro

Insights from the Genomes of Microbes Thriving in Uranium-Enriched Sediments.

Elevated uranium dose (4 g kg-1) causes a shift in billabong sediment communities that result in the enrichment of five bacterial species. These taxa include Geobacter, Geothrix and Dyella species, as well as a novel-potentially predatory-Bacteroidetes species, and a new member of class Anaerolineae (Chloroflexi). Additionally, a population of methanogenic Methanocella species was also identified. Genomic reconstruction and metabolic examination of these taxa reveal a host of divergent life strategies and putative niche partitioning. Resistance-nodulation-division heavy metal efflux (RND-HME)

Hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine transformation by biologically reduced ferrihydrite: evolution of Fe mineralogy, surface area, and reaction rates.

Microbial respiration of Fe(III) oxides has been shown to produce reduced Fe phases that are capable of transforming a variety of oxidized contaminants. Little data, however, are available on how these Fe phases evolve over time and how this evolution may affect their ability to reduce contaminants. Here, the evolution and reactivity of biologically reduced ferrihydrite were monitored over a period of 14 months. Solids were collected from a culture of Geobacter metallireducens (GS-15) thatwas incubated with ferrihydrite (as the electron acceptor) for 0, 7, 10, 20, 75, and 400 days. Mineralogica

Microbial synergies drive simultaneous biodegradation of ethoxy and alkyl chains of Nonylphenol Ethoxylate in fluidized bed reactors.

The widely-used surfactant Nonylphenol Ethoxylate (NPEO) produces endocrine-disrupting compounds during biodegradation, with these byproducts being more harmful than untreated NPEO. This study investigates the effectiveness of a Fluidized Bed Reactor (FBR) in reducing the production of 4-Nonylphenol (4-NP) during the biodegradation of NPEO. Two identical FBR filled with sand were used to assess the NPEO degradation and to enhance the microbial consortia capable of breaking down the complex byproducts, ethanol and fumarate were introduced as co-substrates. Our findings demonstrate the significa

Active transport, substrate specificity, and methylation of Hg(II) in anaerobic bacteria.

The formation of methylmercury (MeHg), which is biomagnified in aquatic food chains and poses a risk to human health, is effected by some iron- and sulfate-reducing bacteria (FeRB and SRB) in anaerobic environments. However, very little is known regarding the mechanism of uptake of inorganic Hg by these organisms, in part because of the inherent difficulty in measuring the intracellular Hg concentration. By using the FeRB Geobacter sulfurreducens and the SRB Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ND132 as model organisms, we demonstrate that Hg(II) uptake occurs by active transport. We also establish tha

Responses of microbial community composition and function to biochar and irrigation management and the linkage to Cr transformation in paddy soil.

Combining biochar with irrigation management to alter the microbial community is a sustainable method for remediating soils contaminated by heavy metals. However, studies on how these treatments promote Cr(VI) reduction are limited, and the corresponding microbial mechanisms are unclear. Therefore, we conducted a pot experiment to explore the responses of soil microbial communities to combined biochar amendment and irrigation management strategies and their involvement in Cr transformation in paddy soils. Six treatments were established using varying concentrations of biochar (0, 1, and 2% [w/

Low-molecular weight organic acids can enhance the microbial reduction of iron oxide nanoparticles and pollutants by improving electrons transfer.

The combined application of dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) and Fe(III) nanoparticles has garnered widespread interest in the contaminants transformation and removal. The efficiency of this composite system relies on the extracellular electron transfer (EET) process between DIRB and Fe(III) nanoparticles. While modifications to Fe(III) nanoparticles have demonstrated improvements in EET, enhancing DIRB activity also shows potential for further EET enhancement, meriting further investigation. In this study, we demonstrated that the addition of low-molecular organic acids (LMWOAs) (o

Highly sensitive standardized toxicity biosensors for rapid water quality warning.

Microbial electrochemical sensor (MES) using electroactive biofilm (EAB) as the sensing element represents a broad-spectrum technology for early warning of biotoxicity of water samples. However, its commercial application is impeded by limited sensitivity and repeatability. Here, we proposed a layered standardized EAB (SEAB) with enriched Geobacter anodireducens SD-1 in the inner layer and self-matched outer layer. The SEAB sensors showed a 2.3 times higher sensitivity than conventional EAB acclimated directly from wastewater (WEAB). A highly repeatable response sensitivity was concentrated at

Structural basis for molecular discrimination by a 3',3'-cGAMP sensing riboswitch.

Cyclic dinucleotides are second messengers that target the adaptor STING and stimulate the innate immune response in mammals. Besides protein receptors, there are bacterial riboswitches that selectively recognize cyclic dinucleotides. We recently discovered a natural riboswitch that targets 3',3'-cGAMP, which is distinguished from the endogenous mammalian signal 2',3'-cGAMP by its backbone connectivity. Here, we report on structures of the aptamer domain of the 3',3'-cGAMP riboswitch from Geobacter in the 3',3'-cGAMP and c-di-GMP bound states. The riboswitch adopts a tuning fork-like architect

Biological enhancement of tetrachloroethene dissolution and associated microbial community changes.

A bench-scale study was performed to evaluate the enhancement of tetrachloroethene (PCE) dissolution from a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) source zone due to reductive dechlorination. The study was conducted in a pair of two-dimensional bench-scale aquifer systems using soil and groundwater from Dover Air Force Base, DE. After establishment of PCE source zones in each aquifer system, one was biostimulated (addition of electron donor) while the other was biostimulated and then bioaugmented with the KB1 dechlorinating culture. Biostimulation resulted in the growth of iron-reducing bacteri

Oxygen vacancy tungsten oxide modified carbon cloth anode for enhancing microbial fuel cell performance.

To mitigate the adverse effects of binders in the anode of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and to enhance the performance of WO3 anodes, the WO3-X/CC, serving as a high-performance anode for MFCs, was developed using magnetron sputtering to apply tungsten oxide onto carbon cloth. The WO3-X/CC anode significantly reduces the charge transfer resistance (Rct) to 9.05 Ω, compared to 43.12 Ω for CC anode. The designed anode also enhances electron transport and extracellular electron transfer (EET), reaching a peak power density of 2644 mW m-2, which is 1.67 times greater than that of uncoated CC (1586

Nitrogen and carbon removal from anaerobic digester effluents with low carbon to nitrogen ratios under feammox conditions.

Removal of nitrogen and carbon from anaerobic digester (AD) effluents is challenging for currently available technologies. Herein, effective treatment for real AD effluents was achieved via the feammox process by using a Multistage Feammox Bioreactor (MSFB). The reactor achieved the best performance with AD effluent of a low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 2.5. A 6-day retention time reached removal efficiencies for NH4+ and COD at 99 % and 97 %, respectively, with a thorough conversion of NH4+ to N2. Accordingly, the MSFB achieved removal rates for N and C of 14 and 34 mg L-1 d-1, respectiv

Ammonium and organic carbon co-removal under Feammox heterotrophic conditions at low Fe3+ concentrations.

Feammox, the anaerobic oxidation of ammonium coupled to Fe3+ reduction, offers a promising alternative for nitrogen removal under low-oxygen and high-organic load conditions. In this study, Feammox was successfully enriched from Anammox sludge by adjusting environmental conditions. Ammonium and organic carbon were co-removed at low Fe3+ concentrations (200 mg/L), indicating that Feammox can operate under heterotrophic conditions. Ferrous iron generation, XRD analysis, and PCR amplification of functional genes (nirK, narG, nxrA) support the occurrence of Feammox and iron cycling. Key microorgan

Kinetic competition between microbial anode respiration and nitrate respiration in a bioelectrochemical system.

The Nernst-Monod model is used to describe bio-anode performance with respect to the effect of the electron donor and anode potential. However, electron competition is not considered in the model, limiting its application in wastewater treatment systems. In this work, nitrate was employed to describe the influence of a competitive electron acceptor on bio-anode performance. A new dynamic model of microbial anode respiration and nitrate respiration was developed for the removal of nitrogen oxides. The competitive relationship between microbial anode respiration and nitrate respiration was inves
