Using mobile phone data to predict the spatial spread of cholera.

Effective response to infectious disease epidemics requires focused control measures in areas predicted to be at high risk of new outbreaks. We aimed to test whether mobile operator data could predict the early spatial evolution of the 2010 Haiti cholera epidemic. Daily case data were analysed for 78 study areas from October 16 to December 16, 2010. Movements of 2.9 million anonymous mobile phone SIM cards were used to create a national mobility network. Two gravity models of population mobility were implemented for comparison. Both were optimized based on the complete retrospective epidemic d

Mapping the capacities of fixed health facilities to cover people at risk of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: The emphasis placed on the activities of mobile teams in the detection of gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) can at times obscure the major role played by fixed health facilities in HAT control and surveillance. The lack of consistent and detailed data on the coverage of passive case-finding and treatment further constrains our ability to appreciate the full contribution of the health system to the control of HAT. METHODS: A survey was made of all fixed health facilities that are active in the control and surveillance of gambiense HAT. Information on their diagnostic an

From Snow's map of cholera transmission to dynamic catchment boundary delineation: current front lines in spatial analysis.

The history of mapping infectious diseases dates back to the 19th century when Dr John Snow utilised spatial analysis to pinpoint the source of the 1854 cholera outbreak in London, a ground-breaking work that laid the foundation for modern epidemiology and disease mapping (Newsom, 2006). As technology advanced, so did mapping techniques. In the late 20th century, geographic information systems (GIS) revolutionized disease mapping by enabling researchers to overlay diverse datasets to visualise and analyse complex spatial patterns (Bergquist & Manda 2019; Hashtarkhani et al., 2021). The COVID-1

Multi-Scale Spatiotemporal Feature Enhancement and Recursive Motion Compensation for Satellite Video Geographic Registration.

Satellite video geographic alignment can be applied to target detection and tracking, true 3D scene construction, image geometry measurement, etc., which is a necessary preprocessing step for satellite video applications. In this paper, a multi-scale spatiotemporal feature enhancement and recursive motion compensation method for satellite video geographic alignment is proposed. Based on the SuperGlue matching algorithm, the method achieves automatic matching of inter-frame image points by introducing the multi-scale dilated attention (MSDA) to enhance the feature extraction and adopting a join

A look back on how far to walk: Systematic review and meta-analysis of physical access to skilled care for childbirth in Sub-Saharan Africa.

OBJECTIVES: To (i) summarize the methods undertaken to measure physical accessibility as the spatial separation between women and health services, and (ii) establish the extent to which distance to skilled care for childbirth affects utilization in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHOD: We defined spatial separation as the distance/travel time between women and skilled care services. The use of skilled care at birth referred to either the location or attendant of childbirth. The main criterion for inclusion was any quantification of the relationship between spatial separation and use of skilled care at

The role of a bus network in access to primary health care in Metropolitan Auckland, New Zealand.

UNLABELLED: Background: This study examined the spatial accessibility of the population of metropolitan Auckland, New Zealand to the bus network, to connect them to primary health providers, in this case doctors (GP) and dentists. Analysis of accessibility by ethnic identity and socio-economic status were also carried out, because of existing health inequalities along these dimensions. The underlying hypothesis was that most people would live within easy reach of primary health providers, or easy bus transport to such providers. METHODS: An integrated geographic model of bus transport routes

Modeling travel impedance to medical care for children with birth defects using Geographic Information Systems.

BACKGROUND: Children with birth defects may face significant geographic barriers accessing medical care and specialized services. Using a Geographic Information Systems-based approach, one-way travel time and distance to access medical care for children born with spina bifida was estimated. METHODS: Using 2007 road information from the Florida Department of Transportation, we built a topological network of Florida roads. Live-born Florida infants with spina bifida during 1998 to 2007 were identified by the Florida Birth Defects Registry and linked to hospital discharge records. Maternal resid

Spatiotemporal modelling and mapping of the bubonic plague epidemic in India.

BACKGROUND: This work studies the spatiotemporal evolution of bubonic plague in India during 1896-1906 using stochastic concepts and geographical information science techniques. In the past, most investigations focused on selected cities to conduct different kinds of studies, such as the ecology of rats. No detailed maps existed incorporating the space-time dependence structure and uncertainty sources of the epidemic system and providing a composite space-time picture of the disease propagation characteristics. RESULTS: Informative spatiotemporal maps were generated that represented mortality

Providing spatial support during a major cholera outbreak in Port-au-Prince, Haiti: Creative mapping solutions in a challenging data poor environment.

In this paper we describe the spatial data challenges faced in terms of providing accurate and timely analysis for a clinic during a cholera epidemic that spread through Port au Prince, Haiti in late 2022. This "triage" spatial epidemiology involved developing a bespoke geocoder that allowed for weekly maps of spread to be created in near real time. Resulting case data were also analyzed using a novel grid heatmapping approach which considers the epidemiological curve for each neighborhood. Adding further complexity during this period to both the data generation, and explaining cholera amplifi

Use of Dimensional Analysis in the X-, Y-, and Z-Axis to Predict Occurrence of Injury in Human Stampede.

BACKGROUND: Human stampedes (HS) may result in mass casualty incidents (MCI) that arise due to complex interactions between individuals, collective crowd, and space, which have yet to be described from a physics perspective. HS events were analyzed using basic physics principles to better understand the dynamic kinetic variables that give rise to HS. METHODS: A literature review was performed of medical and nonmedical sourced databases, Library of Congress databases, and online sources for the term human stampedes resulting in 25,123 references. Filters were applied to exclude nonhuman events

A spatial epidemic model for disease spread over a heterogeneous spatial support.

Data from the Iowa mumps epidemic of 2006 were collected on a spatial lattice over a regular temporal interval. Without access to a person-to-person contact graph, it is sensible to analyze these data as homogenous within each areal unit and to use the spatial graph to derive a contact structure. The spatio-temporal partition is fine, and the counts of new infections at each location at each time are sparse. Therefore, we propose a spatial compartmental epidemic model with general latent time distributions (spatial PS SEIR) that is capable of smoothing the contact structure, while accounting f

A Bayesian Functional Methodology for Dengue Risk Mapping in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Dengue fever has become one of the most outstanding infectious diseases in the world. Besides, the incidence and prevalence of dengue are increasing in the endemic areas of the tropical and subtropical regions. Space and time disease mapping models are common instruments to explain the patterns of disease counts, where hierarchical Bayesian models constitute a suitable framework for their formulation. These random events reflect interactions between nearby geographic locations, as well as correlations between close temporary instants. Functional data analysis techniques can better describe the

Spatial variations of pulmonary tuberculosis prevalence co-impacted by socio-economic and geographic factors in People's Republic of China, 2010.

BACKGROUND: The report of the fifth national tuberculosis (TB) epidemiological survey in P. R. China, 2010, roughly showed that pulmonary TB (PTB) prevalence was higher in western China than in central and eastern China. However, accurately estimating the continuous spatial variations of PTB prevalence and clearly understanding factors impacting on spatial variations of PTB prevalence are important for allocating limited resources of national TB programme (NTP) in P. R. China. METHODS: Using ArcGIS Geostatistical Wizard (ESRI, Redlands, CA), an evaluation was performed to decide that which kr

Geographical analysis of the sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease distribution in the autonomous community of the Basque Country for the period 1995-2008.

BACKGROUND: The Basque Country, in Spain, shows one of the highest sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD) incidence rates in Europe. The purpose is to analyse a possible focus of unidentified external or environmental factors which could trigger the high incidence rates of sCJD in the Basque Country. METHODS: We estimated the relative risk and the posterior relative risk distribution of sCJD cases for each town of the Basque Country and for the period 1995-2008. RESULTS: 58 sCJD cases (44 definite and 14 probable) were selected for the geographic cluster analysis. In a first approach, ref
