Foot length in newborns small for gestational age.

Small for gestational age (SGA) newborns have increased neonatal morbidity and mortality besides having a high risk of contracting chronic diseases during adult life. We compared foot length among 700 SGA and AGA newborns. Foot length was shorter in SGA newborns, both in term and preterm babies. Fetal growth restriction may impair foot growth and this finding may contribute to identify SGA newborns.

Puberty in children born small for gestational age.

Small for gestational age (SGA) children are more prone to have precocious pubarche and exaggerated precocious adrenarche, an earlier onset of pubertal development and menarche, and faster progression of puberty than children born of appropriate for gestational age (AGA) size. The majority of studies investigating the onset of puberty in children born SGA and AGA established that, although puberty begins at an appropriate time (based on chronological age and actual height) in SGA children, onset is earlier relative to AGA children. Evaluating pubertal growth in SGA children, a more modest bone

Maternal age-related rates of gestational trophoblastic disease.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of gestational trophoblastic disease in Nova Scotia and to evaluate the effect of time and maternal age on these rates. METHODS: Information on women with a pathologically confirmed diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease was extracted from the Nova Scotia Gestational Trophoblastic Disease Registry between 1990 and 2005. The total numbers of deliveries and pregnancies were determined from the Nova Scotia Atlee Perinatal Database and consensus data derived from Statistics Canada. RESULTS: Four-hundred twenty-eight women were identified with gestatio

Gestational-age-specific stillbirth risk among Australian Aborigines.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that, for preterm babies, the risk of stillbirth among Australian Aborigines is similar to the risk for whites. In contrast, at full term, the risk for Aborigines is more than twice the risk for whites. However, these studies (like most other analyses of stillbirths) used the number of births at each gestational age to calculate the risk. For stillbirths, the risk is more appropriately estimated using the number of babies in utero. This paper presents the first comparison of stillbirth risk for Australian Aborigines and whites using the more appropriate

Birth weight, prematurity and accuracy of gestational age.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate commonly used birth weight categories in relation to gestational age assignment by menstrual (LMP) or ultrasound dates. METHODS: A total of 34,249 cases were retrieved from the East Midlands Obstetric Database. Of these, 2281 (6.7%) delivered preterm (< 37 weeks) by ultrasound dating. The percentage of preterm and post-term cases was calculated for birth weight categories from < 1500 g to > 4499 g at 500 g intervals. The incidence of preterm delivery was estimated for birth weights from < 1500 g to 3400 g. RESULTS: For the 'low birth weight' cut-off of 2500 g, only

Are babies with gastroschisis small for gestational age?

A large proportion of babies with gastroschisis (GS) have low birth weights. It is not clear, however, whether only certain subgroups or the whole population of babies with GS have low birth weights. The aim of this study was to ascertain if the birth weights of babies with GS are significantly lower than those of the general population and to determine if the birth weights of babies with GS from two different populations were significantly different. From 1969 to 1995, 44 babies with GS were treated at Auckland Children's Hospital, New Zealand. From 1980 to 1993, 69 babies were treated at Bir

Neonatal complications in small-for-gestational age neonates.

A prospective case-control study was carried out in 118 severely small-for-gestational age (SGA) infants and in 118 control infants born during 1985 in the catchment area of the University Central Hospital of Turku to investigate the neonatal complication rate in SGA infants during modern obstetric and neonatal care. All SGA infants had a birth weight below the 2.5th percentile in our fetal growth curve and the control infants were matched for gestational age and mode of delivery. Neonatal complications were found in 42% of SGA neonates compared to 18% of control infants. Hypoglycemia, polycyt

Gestational age and indomethacin elimination in the neonate.

The disposition of oral indomethacin was studied in 9 premature infants with significant patent ductus arteriosus (sPDA) with birth weights ranging from 800 to 1,960 gm and gestational ages of 28 to 36 wk. Peak plasma concentrations in most of the subjects were not observed until 3 to 4 hr after administration and ranged from 0.027 to 0.31 microgram/ml. Plasma half-life (t1/2) of indomethacin ranged from 11 to 20 hr and correlated with gestational age. Plasma protein binding studies, in samples from the premature infant using radiolabeled indomethacin, showed no difference in binding from valu

[Gestational diabetes mellitus-mediated association between serum resistin levels and large for gestational age].

Objective: To investigate the relation of serum resistin levels among pregnant women with the occurrence of large for gestational age (LGA) and its mediation by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Methods: Pregnant women with 15-20+6 gestational weeks were recruited and followed until pregnancy termination. After trend tests for resistin levels and GDM and LGA incidence, restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were used to fit the risk curves for resistin levels concerning GDM and LGA. Log-binomial regression models weighted by the Copy's method were then applied to examine the relationship betw

Placental proteome abnormalities in women with gestational diabetes and large-for-gestational-age newborns.

INTRODUCTION: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most frequent metabolic complication during pregnancy and is associated with development of short-term and long-term complications for newborns, with large-for-gestational-age (LGA) being particularly common. Interestingly, the mechanism behind altered fetal growth in GDM is only partially understood. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A proteomic approach was used to analyze placental samples obtained from healthy pregnant women (n=5), patients with GDM (n=12) and with GDM and LGA (n=5). Effects of altered proteins on fetal development were

Cross-Cohort Mixture Analysis: A Data Integration Approach With Applications on Gestational Age and DNA-Methylation-Derived Gestational Age Acceleration Metrics.

Data integration of multiple studies can provide enhanced exposure contrast and statistical power to examine associations between environmental exposure mixtures and health outcomes. Extant research has combined populations and identified an overall mixture-outcome association, without accounting for differences across studies. We extended the Bayesian Weighted Quantile Sum (BWQS) regression to a hierarchical framework to analyze mixtures across cohorts. The hierarchical BWQS (HBWQS) approach aggregates sample size of multiple cohorts to calculate an overall mixture index, thereby identifying

Beyond cut-offs: gestational age-specific perinatal mortality across the birthweight-for-gestational-age continuum-a population-based cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Abnormal fetal growth is linked to increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Birthweight percentiles-commonly the 10th and 90th-define small (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) infants. Although birthweight charts are periodically updated, cut-offs for SGA and LGA remain fixed, despite changes in population characteristics and evolving clinical management. We aimed to characterize how perinatal mortality varies continuously across birthweight-for-gestational-age (BW-for-GA) and gestational age (GA), describing GA-specific mortality gradients rather than defining new cut-of

Comparison of the diameter of coronary arteries between small for gestational age (SGA) and appropriate for gestational age (AGA) newborn infants.

AIM: For the small for gestational age (SGA) infants born at the normal birth time but whose birth weights were below the 10th percentile and for the appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants born in normal birth weights according to gestational week, the diameters of right and left coronary arteries were echocardiographically measured in three separate time intervals with their body weights, heights and body surface area parameters. The aim of this study is to compare the progression of coronary artery diameters of SGA infants with AGA infants over time and the effects of coronary artery

Earlier gestational age at ultrasound evaluation predicts adverse neonatal outcomes in the preterm appropriate-for-gestational-age fetus with idiopathic oligohydramnios.

Oligohydramnios is related to adverse perinatal outcomes particularly when associated with fetal growth restriction. The purpose of this study was to delineate predictors of adverse perinatal outcomes in cases of preterm idiopathic oligohydramnios associated with appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) fetal biometry. A database of preterm AGA fetuses (< 37 weeks) presenting for evaluation of idiopathic oligohydramnios (defined as an amniotic fluid index [AFI] < 10th percentile) in the third trimester with delivery information and uterine artery Doppler indices (average resistance index [RI] and

The Association between Advanced Maternal Age and Diagnosis of Small for Gestational Age.

OBJECTIVES: To identify whether advanced maternal age (AMA), defined as age ≥35 years old, is independently associated with small for gestational age (SGA). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort of births from the National Vital Statistics System in the United States from 2009 to 2013. Women were categorized based on four age groups at the time of delivery: 20 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, and ≥40 years old. The primary outcome of SGA < 10th and SGA < 5th percentiles was compared between the four groups using both univariable and multivariable analyses to determine whether maternal age w

A prospective observational study comparing cardiac function of small for gestational age with appropriate for gestational age babies using serial echocardiographic studies.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 30% of babies born in India are low birth weight (LBW) and about 70% of LBW babies are small for gestational age (SGA). Though there are several trials that have evaluated cardiac function of intrauterine growth restricted (IUGR) babies in utero, there is limited data about postnatal cardiac function in SGA babies during early neonatal period. This study was conducted to evaluate the cardiac functions of SGA babies by serial echocardiographic measurements and compare this with appropriate for gestational age (AGA) babies during the early postnatal period.
