Speech-independent production of communicative gestures: evidence from patients with complete callosal disconnection.

Recent neuropsychological, psycholinguistic, and evolutionary theories on language and gesture associate communicative gesture production exclusively with left hemisphere language production. An argument for this approach is the finding that right-handers with left hemisphere language dominance prefer the right hand for communicative gestures. However, several studies have reported distinct patterns of hand preferences for different gesture types, such as deictics, batons, or physiographs, and this calls for an alternative hypothesis. We investigated hand preference and gesture types in sponta

An fMRI study of tool-use gestures: body part as object and pantomime.

A body part as object (BPO) gesture is one of the error patterns in apraxia. In the BPO gesture, people represent objects by their hands. To clarify the neuronal background of the BPO gesture, we compared the brain activation during the BPO gesture with that during ordinary pantomime in normal subjects using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Both the BPO gesture and the pantomime induced activation in the left parietal areas (Brodmann's area (BA) 7, 40), irrespective of the hand used. These areas might be activated by a common process of tool-related gestures. The BPO gesture also activat

Simultaneous sEMG Recognition of Gestures and Force Levels for Interaction With Prosthetic Hand.

The natural interaction between the prosthetic hand and the upper limb amputation patient is important and directly affects the rehabilitation effect and operation ability. Most previous studies only focused on the interaction of gestures but ignored the force levels. This paper proposes a simultaneous recognition method of gestures and forces for interaction with a prosthetic hand. The multitask classification algorithm based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) is designed to improve recognition efficiency and ensure recognition accuracy. The offline experimental results show that the alg

An investigation into the relationship between Quality of pantomime gestures and visuospatial skills.

While children with developmental language disorder or Williams syndrome appear to use hand gestures to compensate for specific cognitive and communicative difficulties, they have different cognitive strength-weakness profiles. Their semantic and visuospatial skills potentially affect gesture quality such as iconicity. The present study focuses on untangling the unique contribution of these skills in the quality of gestures. An explicit gesture elicitation task was presented to 25 participants with developmental language disorder between 7 and 10 years of age, 25 age-matched peers with typical

Predicting Object-Mediated Gestures From Brain Activity: An EEG Study on Gender Differences.

Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have identified specific neural patterns related to three different categories of movements: intransitive (i.e., meaningful gestures that do not include the use of objects), transitive (i.e., actions involving an object), and tool-mediated (i.e., actions involving a tool to interact with an object). However, fMRI intrinsically limits the exploitation of these results in a real scenario, such as a brain-machine interface. In this paper, we propose a new approach to automatically predict intransitive, transitive, or tool-mediated moveme

Artificial Neural Network to Detect Human Hand Gestures for a Robotic Arm Control.

Assistive technology is critical to improving daily life of those with muscular issues such as Cerebral Palsy and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy by augmenting their activities of daily living (ADL). Robotic manipulators are one solution for helping with ADL; however, intuitive, accurate interfaces for higher degrees of freedom (DOF) robotic arms are still lacking. An intuitive control system based on artificial neural network (ANN) classification of real-time surface electromyography (sEMG) signals from the user's forearm to detect nine hand gestures and control the movement of the 6 DOF robotic

Getting away from the point: the emergence of ostensive gestures and their functions.

Within developmental psychology, pointing gestures have received a great deal of attention, while ostensive gestures have been overlooked in terms of their emergence and intentionality. In a longitudinal and micro-genetic study with six children at 9, 11, and 13 months of age, we codified gesture production of children within second-by-second data frames. We identified 480 instances of gestures and categorised whether they were of ostensive, ostensive-indexical, or indexical nature. We specified the communicative function of each gesture by analysing the object involved and their circumstances

Relationships between early gestures and later language in children with fragile X syndrome.

PURPOSE: The authors hypothesized that significant positive relationships would exist between early gesture use and later language attainments in children with fragile X syndrome (FXS), as has been reported in studies with other populations. METHOD: Participants were young children with FXS and limited expressive language (21 boys, 4 girls), divided into 2 subgroups based on the Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS; Schopler, Reichler, & Renner, 1988) scores. Data were collected when participants were about 2 years of age and again when they were about 5 years of age. Communication was assesse

Ideomotor apraxia test: a new test of imitation of gestures for elderly people.

Ideomotor apraxia is one of the earliest disturbances in Alzheimer's disease (AD); no test of this disturbance has yet been validated for elderly people. We propose a test of meaningless gesture imitation and its relevance in elderly people is studied. The Ideomotor Apraxia Test (IAT) consists of showing 10 gestures. Each item is graded from 0 to 3. IAT was carried out on 55 patients with AD (mean age: 86.8 +/- 6.8 (71-100); mean MMS score: 14.6 +/- 6.3) and 26 elderly patients without cognitive impairment (mean age: 84.1 +/- 7.5 (70-100); mean MMS score: 27.5 +/- 1.9). Do gestures retain mental associations with their iconic origins, even after they become emblematic? An analysis of the middle-finger gesture among American English speakers.

What concepts and words do communicative gestures activate in the minds of people who view them? It's widely believed that many gestures grow from iconic origins-they look like what they mean-but also that at some point they may become emblematic-conventionalized as culturally agreed-upon symbols. How long do links between physical movements of the body and the things in the world they denote persist in the minds of gesture-users? A pair of experiments asks this question for the Middle-Finger, a cross-culturally recognized obscene gesture. The prevailing view is that the gesture originates in

The connectivity signature of co-speech gesture integration: The superior temporal sulcus modulates connectivity between areas related to visual gesture and auditory speech processing.

Humans integrate information communicated by speech and gestures. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies suggest that the posterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) and adjacent gyri are relevant for multisensory integration. However, a connectivity model representing this essential combinatory process is still missing. Here, we used dynamic causal modeling for fMRI to analyze the effective connectivity pattern between middle temporal gyrus (MTG), occipital cortex (OC) and STS associated with auditory verbal, visual gesture-related, and integrative processing, respectively, to unve

Language prediction in multimodal contexts: The contribution of iconic gestures to anticipatory sentence comprehension.

Evidence shows listeners predict upcoming words, and iconic gestures in face-to-face dialogue often precede their spoken referents. A recent framework proposes that early-onset gestures can pre-activate the meaning of upcoming nouns. This pre-registered EEG study tested this proposal. 81 Dutch adults watched videos of an actress producing discourses ending with a target noun. The noun was either predictable or not from the discourse. Each noun was paired with an iconic gesture whose stroke began either 520 msec (earlier) or 130 msec (later) before the noun. Discourse predictability produced th

Combining Wrist and Hand Gestures to Increase the Number of Classes in Myoelectric Control.

Replicating coordinated and natural multi-joint movements in myoelectric prosthetics remains challenging due to the complexity of controlling multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs). This study explores the formation of a distinct "combination class" by merging dual gesture classes, such as hand gestures and wrist movements, while maximizing their separability to improve the classification. Surface electromyography data were recorded in 9 subjects to assess whether these combined movements can be reliably classified as independent classes with respect to their component movements (individual gestur

The autocracy of meaning: Intact visuo-imitative processes may not compensate for meaningful gestures.

The dual-route models of action distinguish between a semantic and a non-semantic visuo-motor route to execute different types of gestures. Despite the large amount of evidence in support to the model, some aspects are debated. One issue concerns the recruitment of the visuo-motor route to correctly execute meaningful gestures when the semantic route is damaged. Debated predictions of the dual-route model were investigated in a sample of 32 patients with left hemisphere stroke lesions compared to 27 healthy controls. Group analysis showed that patients were equally impaired on meaningful and m

Talking with Your (Artificial) Hands: Communicative Hand Gestures as an Implicit Measure of Embodiment.

When people talk, they move their hands to enhance meaning. Using accelerometry, we measured whether people spontaneously use their artificial limbs (prostheses) to gesture, and whether this behavior relates to everyday prosthesis use and perceived embodiment. Perhaps surprisingly, one- and two-handed participants did not differ in the number of gestures they produced in gesture-facilitating tasks. However, they did differ in their gesture profile. One-handers performed more, and bigger, gesture movements with their intact hand relative to their prosthesis. Importantly, one-handers who gesture

Smart Home Interactions for People with Reduced Hand Mobility Using Subtle EMG-Signal Gestures.

Smart home technology is receiving significant attention. This is largely in response to an increase in the size of demographic those who require assistance due to reduced mobility, in particular, older adults. Smart home technology enables the assistance individuals with limited mobility need for their daily routines: these limitations can be addressed using modern ambient assisted living technologies. In particular we discuss the benefits of using electromyography (EMG) sensors to capture gestural input that would normally be difficult to sense in the absence of such sensors. With EMG, we ca

Pantomime and imitation of limb gestures in relation to the severity of Alzheimer's disease.

The present study was designed to investigate the relationship between performance of limb gestures and the severity of Alzheimer's disease (A.D.). Apraxia tends to occur at later stages of A.D., and the severity of apraxia has been shown to vary with the severity of A.D. dementia. Participants were 19 mild (including 9 with no cognitive impairment and 10 with mild impairment) and 18 moderate A.D. patients as well as 25 controls and they were asked to pantomime (P) or imitate (both concurrent (CI) and delayed (DI)), eight transitive gestures to assess praxis performance. Results indicated that

Establishing the manding function of communicative gestures with individuals with severe/profound mental retardation.

Procedures for teaching communicative gestures to individuals with mental retardation are focused mostly on establishing requesting or manding. It is often taken for granted that when a student has been taught to make a request, that he or she is indeed manding. Five students with severe/profound mental retardation accepted referents, regardless of whether the referents matched the gestures they made. Apparently, their responding could not be defined as manding. A correction procedure, including interruption, physical guidance, verbal instruction, and repetition, was then applied and increased

Segmental gestures at the laryngeal level in whispered speech: evidence from an aerodynamic study.

Peak intraoral air pressure and flow were measured simultaneously for the syllables /pa/ and /ba/ in two speaking conditions (syllable repetitions, and in carrier phrases) and in two phonation modes (normal phonation and whisper). Results indicated that 1) the difference between the intraoral air pressure for /p/ and /b/ was statistically significant in normal phonation, but not in whisper, 2) the difference in peak flow for /p/ and /b/ was statistically significant in both normal phonation and whisper, and 3) the pressure and flow data were unaffected by speaking conditions. These data, plus

Speech and Gesture in Sync: Investigating Temporal Integration Across Childhood.

Our hands rarely lie still while we talk. Some hand movements, like washing dishes or other household tasks, are often unrelated to what we express in speech. Other hand movements, known as gestures, are deeply integrated with verbal communication. Past research with adults has found strong temporal synchrony between speech and gesture, particularly as compared to speech and action. This evidence supports the claim that speech and gesture emerge from a single integrated system and suggests that gestures hold a unique status in communication compared to other kinds of hand movements. However, t
