Emerging avian viruses increasingly threaten Antarctic wildlife, raising concerns about ecosystem health and biodiversity. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of avian influenza virus (influenza A virus, IAV) in both resident and migratory birds inhabiting the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. During the 2024-2025 austral summer, 278 samples were collected and screened using real-time RT-PCR targeting the IAV M gene. IAV RNA was detected in 30 samples, and eight of these were found to be positive for H5. Complete genome sequencing was performed on samples from a gentoo

Bacteriophages, viruses that selectively infect bacteria, are increasingly explored as potential therapies to combat antibiotic-resistant infections. Effective phage purification is vital for therapeutic use, particularly to reduce endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide, LPS) and host protein contamination from production processes in gram-negative bacterial lysates. This study investigates the purification efficiency of CIMmultus OH-monolithic chromatography for seven similarly sized tailed phages (Myoviridae and Siphoviridae families) infecting Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using preferential exclusion chr

A new human helper (CD4) T-lymphotropic herpesvirus (HTLHV) was first isolated in February 1985 from the cultured peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of a patient with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and subsequently from the PBL of 1 patient with hairy cell leukaemia and 2 patients with lymphoproliferative disease associated with human T-lymphotropic virus type I infection. The viruses could be serially subcultured in umbilical cord PBL cultures in which they infected helper (CD4) T-lymphocytes producing multinucleate giant cells with intranuclear inclusions followed by cell lysis. Radiotherapy failure often arises from tumor repopulation by treatment-resistant cancer cells. Following irradiation, cancer cells can undergo endoreplication to form polyploid giant cancer cells (PGCCs)-radiation-persistent cells capable of generating progeny through a virus-like asymmetric budding process. While such membrane budding is evolutionarily conserved across archaea, viruses, and eukaryotic cells, its molecular mechanism in cancer remains poorly defined. Here, a radiation-induced SNCG-FLOT2-CHMP4B signaling axis is identified as a key regulator of PGCC budding. Mechanistically, ASA

Incoming simian virus 40 (SV40) particles enter tight-fitting plasma membrane invaginations after binding to the carbohydrate moiety of GM1 gangliosides in the host cell plasma membrane through pentameric VP1 capsid proteins. This is followed by activation of cellular signalling pathways, endocytic internalization and transport of the virus via the endoplasmic reticulum to the nucleus. Here we show that the association of SV40 (as well as isolated pentameric VP1) with GM1 is itself sufficient to induce dramatic membrane curvature that leads to the formation of deep invaginations and tubules no

Cachexia, a multifaceted wasting syndrome, profoundly impacts quality of life and survival rates in cancer patients. Gut inflammation is identified as a key player among the contributing factors for its development. Consequently, numerous studies have sought to characterize changes in gut microbiota of cachectic individuals, given the well-established roles of the gut microbiota in controlling and/or triggering both local and systemic inflammation in their hosts. Most of these investigations have applied mouse models of tumor-induced cachexia to show correlations between alterations in bacteri

Cutaneous infections might occur in up to 80% of organ transplant recipients (OTR) and viral infections are the most common them. The risk of different skin infection is among related to the intensity of immunosuppression. During the first post-transplant period, herpes viruses are most common. After some months following transplantation, human papilloma viruses represent the most significant infections among OTR. Reactivation of herpes simplex virus in OTR can become more invasive, takes longer to heal, and shows greater potential for dissemination to visceral organs compared to the general p

Cell-to-cell transmission is the most effective pathway for the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1). Infected cells expose virus-encoded fusion proteins on their surface as a consequence of HIV-1 replicative cycle that interacts with noninfected cells through CD4 receptor and CXCR4 coreceptor leading to the formation of giant multinucleated cells known as syncytia. Our group previously described the potent activity of dendrimers against CCR5-tropic viruses. Nevertheless, the study of G1-S4, G2-S16, and G3-S16 dendrimers in the context of X4-HIV-1 tropic cell-cell fusion referred to

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Infections have been suggested to contribute to disease induction and reactivation in many of the idiopathic vasculitides. This review describes and evaluates the evidence that microbes are involved in the etiopathogenesis of these diseases.
RECENT FINDINGS: Large-vessel vasculitis has recently been associated with two specific bacteria. Mycobacterium tuberculosis is thought to have an inducing role in Takayasu arteritis and a Burkholderia bacterium might be involved in giant cell arteritis. Hepatitis B and C viruses have been linked to polyarteritis nodosa. In antineutroph

Several microbes, including Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis), a Gram-positive bacterium, live inside the human nasal cavity as commensals. The role of these nasal commensals in host innate immunity is largely unknown, although bacterial interference in the nasal microbiome may promote ecological competition between commensal bacteria and pathogenic species. We demonstrate here that S. epidermidis culture supernatants significantly suppressed the infectivity of various influenza viruses. Using high-performance liquid chromatography together with mass spectrometry, we identified a gia

INTRODUCTION: The association between infections and autoimmune diseases (AID) has been well described in the medical literature. Several infectious agents have been implicated as inducers of autoimmune responses, such as Parvovirus B19, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, and hepatitis viruses.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined 1,173 sera from patients with 14 different AID and 238 sera from geographically matched healthy controls, for evidence of prior infection with rubella. All samples were tested for the presence of serum antibodies against rubella using the Bio-Rad BioPlex 2200 system.

Verrucous skin lesions have been attributed to various herpes viruses in immunosuppressed patients, including those with human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV). We examined such lesions from six HIV-infected patients to determine the range of microscopic findings present and to establish which herpesviruses were present. Verrucous epidermal hyperplasia, pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia, and massive hyperkeratosis correlate with the warty clinical appearance of the lesions. Herpetic cytopathic changes, including multinucleated epidermal giant cells, steel-gray nuclei, necrotic acantholytic

This study investigates the susceptibilities of the SPB cell line to fish viruses including giant seaperch iridovirus (GSIV-K1), red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV-Ku), grouper nervous necrosis virus (GNNV-K1), chum salmon reovirus (CSV) and eel herpesvirus (HVA). GSIV-K1, RSIV-Ku and CSV replicated well in SPB cells, with a significant cytopathic effect and virus production. However, the cells were HVA and GNNV refractory. To examine the ability of SPB cells to stably express foreign protein, expression vectors encoding GNNV B1 and B2 fused to enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) and GSIV OR

Fourteen juvenile (15- to 20-month-old) green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas), representative of a group of sea turtles with clinical signs of respiratory tract disease, were euthanatized and submitted for necropsy. Macroscopically, lesions included periglottal necrosis, tracheitis with intraluminal caseous and laminated necrotic debris, and severe pneumonia. Several turtles had caseous conjunctival exudate covering the eyes. Microscopically, the turtles had fibrinonecrotic inflammation around the glottal opening, tracheitis, and severe bronchopneumonia and interstitial pneumonia. In multifocal a

Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the heart muscle that can be triggered by various causes, including viruses, autoimmune response, molecular mimicry and exposure to immune-stimulating drugs or vaccines. Most cases of myocarditis heal, and cardiac dysfunction, if present, recovers; however, selected forms may require targeted therapy to improve outcomes. We herein review five conditions presenting with or mimicking myocarditis that require targeted diagnostic approaches, including endomyocardial biopsy, and/or targeted treatments. Giant cell myocarditis is an intense and unresolving in

The sciences of vaccinology and immunology were created only two centuries ago by Jenner's scientific studies of prevention of smallpox through inoculation with cowpox virus. This rudimentary beginning was expanded greatly by the giants of late 19th- and early 20th-century biomedical sciences. The period from 1930 to 1950 was a transitional era, with the introduction of chick embryos and minced tissues for propagating viruses and rickettsiae in vitro for vaccines. Modern vaccinology began about 1950 as a continuum following notable advances made during the 1940s and World War II. Its pursuit h

Porcine circovirus-associated disease (PCVAD) and porcine respiratory disease complex (PRDC) significantly impact the pig industry worldwide. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) is the primary pathogen associated with PCVAD, whereas PRDC is caused by a combination of pathogens including porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and pathogenic bacteria. Despite the availability of a PCV2 vaccine that effectively controls and prevents PCVAD, subclinical PCV2 infection (PCV2-SI) still occurs under field conditions. Various porcine pathogens enter via the nasal cavity, where nasopha

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the major viral cause of severe pulmonary disease in young infants worldwide. However, the mechanisms by which RSV causes disease in humans remain poorly understood. To help bridge this gap, we developed an ex vivo/in vitro model of RSV infection based on well-differentiated primary pediatric bronchial epithelial cells (WD-PBECs), the primary targets of RSV infection in vivo. Our RSV/WD-PBEC model demonstrated remarkable similarities to hallmarks of RSV infection in infant lungs. These hallmarks included restriction of infection to noncontiguous or small cl

IMPORTANCE: Acute myocarditis, defined as a sudden inflammatory injury to the myocardium, affects approximately 4 to 14 people per 100 000 each year globally and is associated with a mortality rate of approximately 1% to 7%.
OBSERVATIONS: The most common causes of myocarditis are viruses, such as influenza and coronavirus; systemic autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus; drugs, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors; and vaccines, including smallpox and mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. Approximately 82% to 95% of adult patients with acute myocarditis present with chest pain, while 19
