BACKGROUND: SMARCA4-deficient undifferentiated tumor (SMARCA4-UT) is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy characterized by loss of BRG1 expression. Oral involvement is exceptionally uncommon and may pose significant diagnostic challenges because of its nonspecific clinical and pathological features.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old man presented with a rapidly enlarging painful gingival mass in the right posterior mandible. He had a history of a clinically diagnosed hepatic malignancy without histopathological confirmation. Imaging revealed local alveolar bone destruction and multiple bila

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid (acantholytic) squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) is a histological variant of squamous cell carcinoma which occurs mainly in the sun-exposed areas of the head and neck region. It is commonly seen among males which mainly occurs in the sixth and seventh decade of life with lip being predominately affected. Limited scientific literature is documenting the intraoral presentation of ASCC in contrast to its usual extraoral lesions associated with the skin. Characteristic pseudo glandular alveolar space formation seen in ASCC often mimics carcinoma of salivary gland origin. In-dep

INTRODUCTION: Oral leiomyomatous hamartoma (OLH) is a rare developmental tumor-like anomaly of the oral cavity.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report documents a 4-year-old female who was diagnosed with an OLH of the palatal gingiva between the maxillary central incisors. This lesion was treated successfully by local surgical excision.
CONCLUSION: Because many of the reported cases of this lesion have developed on the anterior maxillary gingiva, it is important for the periodontist to be aware of this entity.

BACKGROUND: A dentinogenic ghost cell tumor is a locally invasive neoplasm that is characterized by ameloblastoma-like islands of epithelial cells in a mature connective tissue stroma.
METHODS: A 43-year-old male patient presented a well-circumscribed sessile, exophytic mass of the gingiva with a diameter of 2 cm located in the canine area of the right maxilla. The lesion was enucleated.
RESULTS: The lesion showed odontogenic epithelium, ghost cells, dentinoid material, and giant cells. The final microscopic diagnosis was a dentinogenic ghost cell tumor.
CONCLUSIONS: A dentinogenic ghost ce

BACKGROUND: Papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma. PSCC can occur as either an in situ or invasive tumor. The sites of occurrence in order of the most to least prevalent are the larynx, oropharynx, and nasopharynx. We present an unusual case of PSCC occurring on the gingiva.
METHODS: A 72-year-old white female presented with a chief complaint of tooth mobility in the right posterior mandible. Clinical examination revealed a Miller's Class 2 mobility of tooth #28 along with an erythematous, papillary appearance of the lingual gingiva on teeth #27

We report a case of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma of gingiva mimicking pyogenic granuloma. To our knowledge, no such reports have been published in the literature of dermatology. Gingival metastatic lesions are of interest both because they are easily mistaken for several benign lesions and because they may be the first sign of an undiscovered malignancy.

A 37-year-old man presented with gingival hyperplasia accompanied by an ulcer on the eyelid, nasal obstruction, ear discharge, and discharging nodules on the cheek and back. An evaluation for infectious diseases and leukemia was negative. During his hospital stay, he had fever and migratory joint pains develop, suggesting a diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis, which was confirmed by a strongly positive cytoplasmic antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody test. He responded promptly to treatment with oral prednisolone and cyclophosphamide. In retrospect, the diagnosis could have been suspected ear

The response of the gingiva to an increased interdental space was studied by creating a diastema between the central incisors of rats and analyzing autoradiographically the incorporation of H3 proline in the gingiva to detect increased collagen production. In addition, conventional histologic methods were used to determine changes in the gingival architecture. The results indicate that the gingiva responds to an increased space in at least two ways. One is the production of more collagen fibers. The other involves the reorientation of the existing fibers in a horizontal plane as the gingival p

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that presents as benign tumours of the nervous system originating from the nerve sheath. It is of three types: Type I, Type II and Schwannomatosis. Type I Neurofibromatosis or von Recklinghausen's disease is the most common type of neurofibromatosis seen and it accounts for 90% of all cases seen. It can be seen as light brown pigmentation spots (Café-au-lait) on the skin and multiple small tumours among the nerves. Oral manifestations of NF are very rare and can be seen as sessile lesion in the tongue or the gingiva. The major complaints of the oral

Gingival recession involves apical displacement of the soft-tissue margin and root exposure that can negatively affect smile esthetics, increase susceptibility to root caries, and lead to dentin hypersensitivity. Regardless of the predisposing conditions leading to its inflammatory etiology, gingival recession can be treated with tissue grafting (eg, free gingival grafts or connective tissue grafts) or acellular dermal matrix. Because each therapy is characterized by the type of grafting material used, the manner in which the grafting material is harvested, and the respective technique for pla

Oral focal mucinosis (OFM) is an uncommon, asymptomatic, submucosal, slow-growing nodule representing a counterpart of the cutaneous focal mucinosis (CFM). OFM has a female predilection with the highest prevalence in the fifth decade of life. About 68% of OFMs occur in the gingiva and 14% in the palate. We present the case of a 41-year-old woman presenting a progressively growing mass on the palate, since the last 8 months. The diagnostic workup led to the diagnosis of an unusual OFM with the clinical presentation involving the gingiva and hard palate. This case report discusses the clinical a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is characterised by varied clinical manifestations and is often diagnosed at an advanced stage. This article highlights a case of gingival squamous cell carcinoma which was initially diagnosed and treated as localised periodontitis.
METHODS: A 64-year-old Caucasian male had a 2-year history of discomfort and swelling around his upper anterior teeth. His dentist diagnosed localised periodontitis around tooth 11. The patient was treated with regular scaling but showed no improvement. Teeth 11 and 21 were subsequently extracted. He returned

INTRODUCTION: Localized amyloidosis in the head and neck is a rare and generally benign condition. In the oral cavity, amyloidosis usually involves the tongue or buccal mucosa. We present the second case of oral amyloidosis arising in the gingiva ever reported, to the best of our knowledge.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old White Spanish man presented a persistent nodular mass involving his upper gingiva. The lesion was surgically resected and the histological examination revealed a subepithelial, multinodular amorphous and fibrillar accumulation. Staining of the specimen for Congo red proved

Plasmacytoma is a malignant disease that present either in bone marrow (medullary plasmacytoma), within the bone (solitary plasmacytoma of bone), or outside of bone, as the extramedullary plasmacytoma. Extramedullary plasmacytoma accounts for 3% of all plasma cell tumours and approximately 90% of extramedullary plasmacytomas affect the head and neck region commonly affecting the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, tonsillar fossa and oral cavity. Multiple extramedullary plasmacytoma is defined when there is more than one extramedullary tumour of clonal plasma cells and such presentations are extr

Primary mucosal malignant melanoma of the oral cavity is a rare tumor. It accounts for only 0.2-8% of all malignant melanomas. This malignancy commonly affects male subjects and is more frequently seen on the hard palate and maxillary gingiva. The peak age for diagnosis of oral melanoma is between 55 and 65 years. A biopsy is required to establish a diagnosis. Ablative surgery with tumor-free margins remains the treatment of choice. It has a much poorer prognosis than its counterpart on the skin. Here, we present a case of malignant melanoma of the mandibular lingual gingiva in a 55-year-old m

Podoplanin, a transmembrane glycoprotein, has been considered to be expressed specifically by lymphatic endothelial cells. However, recent studies have shown that the protein is expressed in a variety of normal as well as neoplastic tissues, and that its expression might be related to cell migration and invasion. In this study, we examined podoplanin expression in inflamed gingival tissues using an immunohistochemical method. Positive immunoreactivity for podoplanin was found in the cell membrane and cytoplasm of basal cells of oral gingival epithelium when severe inflammatory cell infiltratio
