Maxillary canines are the second most commonly impacted teeth, with mandibular third molars being the most commonly impacted teeth. One-third of the impacted maxillary canines are labially impacted, and the remaining two-thirds are palatally impacted. Palatally impacted canines (PICs) comprise approximately 1% to 2.5% of the general population. These impactions can be managed with preventive, interceptive techniques or surgical uncovering. If preventive or interceptive measures are unsuccessful in allowing the canine to erupt, there are many techniques that can be employed to uncover the PIC.

INTRODUCTION: Gingival enlargement (GE) due to anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) shows a high prevalence rate. However, lamotrigine, a newer AED, has not shown to induce GE. The present case report describes a rare case of GE in a patient with epilepsy under lamotrigine therapy for the past 3 years.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, successful management of lamotrigine-influenced GE in a 24-year-old patient with epilepsy by gingivectomy followed by stringent oral hygiene protocol is presented.
CONCLUSION: The present case report suggests that, even this newer AED can cause GE and the oral hygiene

From a technical viewpoint, vestibuloplasty is the easiest method to deepen the vestibulum and is mostly preceded by gingivectomy or a flap operation. Grafting of free mucosa is the method of choice in cases of small regions of operation, prominent alveolar ridges, where open vestibuloplasty has already been performed and serious coronal shifting the scar has occurred, and where a coronal sliding of flap was planned as a second operation to cover a gingival recession. In cases of gingival recessions and areas with narrow, less than 3 mm broad gingiva propria having no obvious pathologically al

OBJECTIVE: This clinical study aimed to evaluate the effect of virtual reality (VR) technology on anxiety and pain levels in patients undergoing gingivectomy and gingivoplasty procedures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The patients were randomized into test (surgery with VR glasses) and control (surgery without VR glasses) groups. Before the surgery, the anxiety level was measured using the modified dental anxiety scale (MDAS), and anticipated pain (AP) was measured by a visual analog scale (VAS). Immediately after the surgery, the pain and discomfort associated with the surgery (VASP), procedure tim

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the present study were to investigate the effect of low-intensity laser irradiation on the total number of mast cells as well as the percentage of degranulation in human gingiva. Blood vessel dilation was also evaluated.
BACKGROUND DATA: It has been proposed that low-intensity laser irradiation can ameliorate pain, swelling, and inflammation. In periodontal tissue, mast cells may influence either the destructive events or the defense mechanism against periodontal disease via secretion of cytokines and through cellular migration to improve the healing process. Mast cells

OBJECTIVE: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is one type of chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease. It has been suggested that rheumatic diseases may have additional underlying factors in common with chronic periodontitis. However, few studies have addressed the possible link between AS and chronic periodontitis. We undertook the present case-control study to investigate the possible association between AS and chronic periodontitis using a population-based data set in Taiwan.
METHODS: We conducted this study by using administrative claims data sourced from the Taiwan National Health Insurance progr

Special care in dentistry : official publication of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, and the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry2010eng
Drug-induced gingival enlargement has been reported in patients treated with various types of anticonvulsant drugs, and is generally associated with the presence of plaque, gingival inflammation, and a genetic predisposition. Effective treatment includes daily oral hygiene and periodic professional prophylaxis. However, in some patients, surgical removal of the gingival tissue overgrowth becomes necessary. The patient in this case report was mentally impaired and had severe drug-induced gingival enlargement. This report describes the initial protocol, the gingivectomy, and a 2-year follow-up.

Soft-tissue lasers have numerous applications in orthodontics, including gingivectomy, frenectomy, operculectomy, papilla flattening, uncovering temporary anchorage devices, ablation of aphthous ulcerations, exposure of impacted teeth, and even tooth whitening. As an adjunctive procedure, laser surgery has helped many orthodontists to enhance the design of a patient's smile and improve treatment efficacy. Before incorporating soft-tissue lasers into clinical practice, the clinician must fully understand the basic science, safety protocol, and risks associated with them. The purpose of this art

A 10-year-old boy with a history of tuberous sclerosis was sent for evaluation of numerous papules on his lower gum area. The parent was concerned that the lesions were interfering with oral hygiene. A diagnosis of oral fibromas was made and treatment options of gingivectomy or electrosurgery combined with carbon dioxide laser were described to the patient and his parent. Therapy with electrocautery and a pulsed carbon dioxide laser was decided on and utilized. We describe for the first time the combination of electrosurgery and carbon dioxide laser as a treatment method for oral fibromas. A s

Phenytoin-induced gingival overgrowth is a recognized side effect in many cerebral palsy patients using diphenyl hydantoin for the control of seizures. Severe gingival overgrowth in these patients can affect normal masticatory function, lead to poor occlusal development, and compromise esthetics. This report addresses the complex nature of treating phenytoin-induced gingival overgrowth in a mentally retarded 20-year-old female patient. For this patient, full-mouth gingivectomy procedure was performed under general anesthesia in a single session. Post operative follow-up was uneventful. This ar

In cases where malocclusion is associated with intrinsic discoloration and/or discrepancies in tooth size and shape, such as peg-shaped laterals, orthodontics alone may not improve the aesthetics. In these situations, veneers may be considered as an adjunct to orthodontic treatment to improve the overall aesthetics. The aim of this study is to report a clinical case where an uneven occlusal plane was corrected, and the positioning of gingival zeniths, color, shape, and size of the dental elements involved were improved by means of gingivectomy and rehabilitation with 10 ceramic laminate veneer

This article highlights a peculiar case of Crohn's disease (CD) with the primary presenting symptom as localized gingival overgrowth in the anterior region of maxilla. The patient underwent surgical treatment with external bevel gingivectomy procedure. Follow-up after 6 months revealed no recurrence. A final diagnosis of CD was made, after following histopathological evaluation of the gingival biopsy and other special investigations. It is thus crucial to associate the localized granulomatous gingival overgrowth to systemic signs of CD. Intraoral occurrence preceding intestinal involvement is
