[Morphological evaluation of posterior capsule opacification in diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses].

BACKGROUND: Diffractive multifocals belong to the first generation of multifocal intraocular lenses. Dure to their optical principle of diffraction multifocals separate the incoming light on two foci (41%) with 18% loss of scattered light. Therefore, reduced contrast sensitivity and glare have been frequently described with this lens. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated 42 eyes of 25 patients (age at surgery 63.8 +/- 8.8 years) 3 years after implantation of a Pharmacia 811E diffractive multifocal (MIOL). They were tested for functional results including contrast and glare (Mesoptometer II). In

Refractive and ocular motor status in autistic adults without learning disabilities: an exploratory study.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Refractive and ocular motor anomalies may be more prevalent among autistic adults without learning disabilities, compared to a non-autistic clinical population. In line with current guidance, optometrists should exclude these anomalies prior to prescribing tinted lenses. BACKGROUND: Autistic adults report various visual experiences with largely negative consequences on daily living. Some of these overlap with symptoms of refractive and ocular motor anomalies. Therefore, this study investigated refractive and ocular motor status, and pattern glare, in autistic adults withou

[Mesoptic vision in multi- and monofocal pseudophakia and in phakic control eyes].

UNLABELLED: The mesopic visual acuity (MVA) after intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is reduced compared to phakic patients of the same age. However, previous studies from our clinic have shown no significant MVA difference between multi- and monofocal IOLs. In the present study (with the patients matched exactly for age), this topic was reevaluated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated three groups, each consisting of 28 persons, 51 to 60 years of age. Group I consisted of healthy phakic volunteers, group II of patients 3 months after cataract extraction and implantation of a monofocal pos

Visual function after surgery for early cataract.

Glare disability and contrast sensitivity loss can be present in cataract patients with minimally reduced visual acuity. Objective and subjective visual function was analyzed in 72 patients (mean visual acuity = 20/40) before and after cataract surgery. Following surgery, most subjects regained normal function in all tests. Improvement in contrast sensitivity and reduction of glare disability were independent of preoperative visual acuity. Subjective improvement in visual function was predicted by acuity and contrast sensitivity tests.
